The Great Badger Coaching Search of '23: Start Drinking Heavily

I’m here. Andy Brandt sitting with the other hockey staff. I’m guessing he is staying on. Press conference with reporters is next.

We ran into Andy Brandt on the way out. He said him staying is “still to be determined.” Could be he doesn’t know, but I suspect he just can’t say anything.

“We not me” was the best line I heard.

I liked the talk about family and having the family mentality for the team. Quite the contrast to Granato’s we are going to get the best recruits and if one leaves we will just get another. In retrospect, that really promoted individualism and his teams played like a bunch of individuals.

Any of you ever see the movie Forever Strong? Highly recommend it. Highland Rugby’s coach is what I hope Hastings is.

Just got to watch the intro…

holy sheeeeeeyat am I pumped!

first, I’ll be honest. Great intro Mac!!!

second, LOVED Hasting’s speech. Loved it.

Hopefully they post the q & a with reporters soon.

Shame to lose out on Buckberger

Also worth noting from that article is that Shane Connelly is out as Director of Hockey Operations, with an opening for that role to be hired as well

TG should not have pushed him out a year. Oh well. Just get Fink to Madison at all costs.

Cons had to go as well.

The intro was fine, I didn't really expect to learn anything that new or groundbreaking.

Would be curious as to why Buckberger would want to switch considering UW is getting a demonstrably better coach. Unless TG sold him on all the NHL contacts and hype...not the team.

And yep Cons def meeded to go. He was also the volunteer goalie coach and not like there was any success there either.

Could Brandt potentially be Hockey Ops since he knows the lay of the land or would we want him as a bench asst should he be asked to stay?

I haven't been following this thread, so is Oz gone now too?

I assume he is for a number of reasons. First the luster is off the rose of the D whisper at this point. The 2nd stint of Oz in Madison has been far less sucessful than the first go around and it is probably time to sweep most of the old regime responsible for 2 decent/mediocre in 7 otherwise awful seasons. Additionally, we just had a dman ask for a release from his LOI where I am assuming Oz was the primary recruiter/reason he pick UW and part of the reasoning was he likely knows Oz is gone. Last, in order for Knott to decline the Mankato head gig and follow Hastings to UW as an assistant, the pay rate would have to be in the highest paid assistants in college hockey range. Oz already in that range would mean having 2 guys in that range which even with Big Ten TV money seems unlikely (especially with Hastings getting a bump over Granato, Granato having a buyout, football coaching turnover presumeably having buyouts/higher salaries to navigate).

OK. Just going to throw this out there. I have a single ticket to the FF available for this weekend as my buddy unfortunately couldn't make it. It's a prime seat, so I wanted to gauge possible interest for anyone going down that might want to be seen on TV broadcasts sitting next to a grouchy Badger fan.

That out to revive the discussion on the women's thread on salary inequity of women's vs men's hockey coach salaries.

Is there really a discussion? 22/23 attendance Women's 52,321 vs Men's 157,321 for a difference of 104,787. Multiply the difference of 104787 by $24 per ticket and you get a difference of 2.5 million (before you get into concessions, parking, advertising). I also assume tickets for Women's are less than $24 (and the $24 for Men's may be exposing that I have not been to a Men's game in several years primarily due to product quality) and there is a significant financial difference even in the first 52K of attendance for both. I would also guess it is harder/less lucrative to attach Badger Fund donation requirements to Women's season ticket purchases. Add the fact that investing in a Men's coach has the potential payoff to bump Men's attendance by more than the women draw. Rebuild the Men's brand back to the levels of averaging 10K per game, and the "extra" money invested in a coach is well worth the payoff.

Mark, you are firing on all cylinders today between this and the Oz discussion.

Brandt was in the house yesterday with the other hockey staff - equipment, trainer, strength, etc. and he was out recruiting when the Hastings announcement was made. I have to think he is staying in some capacity.....
