Yeah I’m all on board for roe being overturned stat.

Even if we flip a few more senate states- do we believe any state that Rs control the gov role or state legislatures will now allow a d to win a senate race?

Manchin has all the power and he knows it. Bernie went after him. Manchin told him to go fuck himself. No amount of arm-twisting is going to make Manchin change his mind. National Democrats have no power over him. It behooves him to look like he’s a Republican in his state. You know this. Manchin fucking sucks, but he’s a symptom of the much larger problem: the anti-majoritarian lean of the Senate.
What did fivethirtyeight find, a 6-point tilt on average in the Senate towards the GOP that Democrats would have to overcome to maintain 50-50 in the Senate? Blue waves led to 50-50 in the Senate, and a 3-person majority in the House, that is 99.8% returning to the GOP after November ‘22, not least of which will be due in part to Republican gerrymandering from the statehouses they held or expanded upon during our 2020 “blue wave.” We’re fucking pis-ed at Manchin and Sinema because we as a party likely won’t have another shot at reconciliation bills that produce meaningful change until 2028 or later, which will easily be too late for the planet by then. It’s basically too late now.

Yeah we get that...the problem is the Dems don't.

There are ways to get Manchin to vote for Infrastructure because WV needs that money and even the GOP there had it polling high. At one point their Governor was saying they want it. All politics is local the Dems should be destroying him with ads there and nationally. Instead of the GOP making Biden the face of inaction you make him the face of it. (Sinema already is which is why her support in her home state is falling faster than Trump's IQ after sundown) West Virginians need jobs and their Senator is why they don't have them.

Now, this is where I will note that the "liberal" Press is not helping here. Giving him a platform to spew his BS without rebuttal needs to end. That goes for all of them especially CNN and Chucky Todd at MSNBC.

The Dems aren't playing the right game. They think it is 1992 and the differences can be hashed out over drinks in smoke filled rooms away from the prying eyes of the people. They are playing like it is week 8 of the season and there is always a game next week. They don't realize it is the playoffs and they are losing in the 4th quarter and the clock is running. They need to govern like their hair is on fire.

Right now I think the only thing that can save us is if the SC overturns Roe because that might be the final straw for all Dems.

I think they should go ahead and overturn all the stuff social cons want them to overturn. Roe? Stick a coat hanger in it. Obergefell? Stuff it back in the closet. Go straight for it and we'll see just how much what remains of the left in this country gives a sh*t.

And that’s why I’m so ****ed at those two. I put climate action higher than nearly everything else.

we’re so fucked. We’ll literally be in a situation in a few decades where the floods and fires and droughts are worse and republicans will be fine with drowning as long as they are clutching fistfuls of money and they prevented a brown person from eating

The Climate is dead. Half the Dems dont even fight for it because their constituents are selfish pricks. No way a guy like Tester could vote for Climate and keep his job...although Sinema could.

That was America's chance to really take back their leadership role in the world and we fucked it up. Now we can all expect "Fire Season" to only get worse each year.

Fire Season.
Hurricane Season.
Wind Season.
Tornado Season.
Etc., etc., etc.

That would likely lead to the end of the country...or at least fighting in the streets.

You can see it all with the lack of response and accountability for Jan 6. If they don't fix that we're done. The border has gotten more press and more outrage.

The fact that all of this reconciliation BS wasn't figured out around Sinema and Manchin ahead of time is what is wrong with the Democrats. This is a Schumer problem. Pelosi doesn't make this mistake. They should have went to them two ahead of time (June) and said what can we get. What will you support. Here's all the possible ideas.

Pretty sure they did. Manchin said he was all for the linked bipartisan and reconciliation bills.

Until he then said he wasn't. So now what do you do?

It's pretty obvious that this was not hashed out ahead of time. Manchin apparently has been on record for the top ceiling number for months. Even the mysterious Sinema has been on the record for some of her concerns.

Sure, they're all BS, but that's how much power they both have.

The only thing that can save the Democratic Party from itself right now is if the Supreme's throw Roe in the dumpster. 50/50 shot at this point.

Likely the only thing that is going to save this country if it got enough people to vote for Democrats as a result.

But Americans are fickle and lazy and stupid. If the pandemic and the republicans staging an attempted coup didn't result in drastic changes, what will? Starving babies lying in the streets? Little by little we are watching this country die. And what will our response be? We will look to 1930s Germany for guidance.

True. I just figured that if something were actually taken away instead of just the "news". You'd think the pandemic response would be the end of the Republican Party but frankly the humans that happen to be Americans can justify anything to fit their warped view of the world. Overturning Roe is the only thing I can think of that the Republicans could do to initiate any sort of response. However, it's basically gone in Texas right now and it appears to be no big deal. It's not like the national media is discussing it daily. But the caravans? That was daily news.

I could swear I recently heard (on Last Week Tonight or maybe Axios) that climate is a popular topic and even more and more republican voters agree it's an issue.

[edit] This isn't very recent (June 2020) but:

Two-Thirds of Americans Think Government Should Do More on Climate
Bipartisan backing for carbon capture tax credits, extensive tree-planting efforts

What the people want (even republican voters) and what the Republicans do while in power are two different things. Universal Background checks have ~90% support across the board. It will never pass. And Manchin all by himself has destroyed any movement on climate anyway. No Republicans needed.

That wasn't the argument being made I replied to.

Except all politics isn’t local anymore. It’s been nationalized for nearly two decades now, at least for House/Senate races. Bernie Sanders basically told West Virginians in their newspaper that Manchin isn’t helping them, and Manchin told him to shut the fuck up. What’s happened since then? West Virginians vote GOP. They hate outstaters because outstaters think they’re dumbfuck fat redneck methheads. Democrats making Manchin the face of inaction in West Virginia would do absolutely fucking nothing to move the needle on Manchin voting “yes” on a larger reconciliation bill. In fact, it would do the opposite. When he says he knows his constituents better than us, he’s not wrong. Joe Manchin is not going to be cowed by Bernie Sanders or others telling him to vote for the bigger bill. Democrats offered him millions to switch coal plants over to clean energy plants, and provide money to those coal workers until they could start their jobs as renewable energy workers, etc. Manchin called it “welfare” and added an “oh, fuck you.” You think an educational video on how Manchin is wrong from elitist outstater intellectual a—holes is going to change their minds, much less Manchin’s? Please. There is no West Virginia Democratic apparatus anymore to even be effective at making that play.
Sinema’s numbers are dropping because Arizona is purple and has way more Democrats who are able to effectively recognize and relay the message that she’s a fucking piece of garbage than West Virginia does Manchin. She either doesn’t recognize the threat, doesn’t care, or thinks Republicans will vote for her against a Republican again come 2024. She’s wrong, but she’ll fuck around and find out come then.

Then I guess I don't understand the argument. Even if Dems were fighting tooth and nail right now for climate it wouldn't make any difference. Polling might matter a little come election time but it has nothing to do with what actually gets done in Congress. Even at the State level.

But a handful of cornpones in Flyoverland and oil companies don't agree, and thanks to the Senate they have more voting power than those of us who live and work in cities.
