This is why I hate being an outdoorsman and the hobby being 80% MAGA...
Had a conversation earlier in the week with an Illinois Conservation Police Officer (who surprisingly ISN'T MAGA, but also not much beyond purple). Known him for years through the hobby and this particular officer being the "PR" face, as he mans the booth at many off-season sports shows and many other events throughout the year. He shared some numbers for tickets/citations and just the general "vibe" of enforcement operations over the late Fall and Winter. And much of what he said seems to track with the perceived stereotype that (at some particular locations) that foreigners are truly the ones being the pigs, with things like fishing without a license, over harvest/poaching, and littering.
For some context, this is based around the Yellow Perch fishing that is done at "Steelworker's Park". It's an old, decommissioned industrial slip on the far south side of Chicago. The slip hasn't been used in any capacity for 30+ years now. About 15 years ago, the City of Chicago acquired the land on the shores of Lake Michigan South of the slip along with about 50 yards of "shoreline" on the South side of the actual slip. The remainder of the slip (Entire North side and about 85% of the South Side) is still privately owned and has been passed off in a couple of property deals over the years. The most recent acquisition is for the land to become a data center, but since it's nowhere near "shovels in the ground" development, people will just go around the crumbling fences that line the private land and fish the entire slip. Every Winter, starting around Thanksgiving, Yellow Perch take up residence in the slip for the Winter, along with larger Lake Trout that follow the Perch to feed on them. They will then hang around until Spring finally breaks in Late February/Early March.
With both being high sought "food" fish, the slip is by far the most attended single fishing spot in IL. On a nice weather weekend day, you could have 400-500 people fishing along the walls of the slip. And yet, with the numbers being what they are, only about 1/2 of the people fishing have English as their main language. Spanish is the main foreign language, but Eastern European and Southeast Asian languages are very prominent and noticeable.
All that being said, with the ICE situation in Chicago this past Fall/Winter, the amount of people fishing fell significantly. Along with that, the amount of citations for fishing without a license, over-harvest, and littering fell by over 50%...
It's not hard to acknowledge the variable that changed here. And I'm not sure how to feel about this. I don't hide the fact that I'm VERY defensive about our fisheries. And the amount of poaching I've seen with my own eyes at this location is by far the most I've seen in person. It truly does seem like I need to come to grips with the data here and call a Spade a Spade... It's a certain demographic of people in this instance that are doing the damage to our fishery here. And I feel dirty for having to acknowledge it =(
Of course, MAGA has always been against foreigners fishing (and it's actually comical watching MAGA fight the Eastern Euros on social media over this since the Euros get PISSED that they are viewed on the same level as Latin-X and Asians). And MAGA don't hide it. But at the same time, this particular set of data doesn't leave me much of an argument. And I feel dirty as fuck about it
