The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

We do get an extra day of rest if that helps.

It certainly would help Altidore's hamstring heal a bit more, eh? Clearly we really need him. No one else has the size and strength to control a long forward ball and no one else knows how to play with back to the goal. The 4-4-2 works so much better for us than the 4-5-1 or 4-2-3-1 or the 4-3-2-1 or whatever you want to call it.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

I had hoped to be singing this on Sunday, right after Bradley booted the ball way downfield in the 94th minute.

So glad to be able to hum it today:

"We are staying,
We are staying,
We are staying in Brazil."

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

We've now advanced out of our group in three of the last four World Cups. Countries that have equaled or bettered that:

Germany (4)
Brazil (4)
Mexico (4)
Argentina (3, did not advance in 2002)
England (3, did not advance in 2014)
Netherlands (3, did not qualify in 2002)
Spain (3, did not advance in 2014)

It's not bad company to be in, overall. South Korea would join this group if they manage to advance later today, which looks unlikely but isn't impossible.

Interesting.

Did anyone else see that line that Germany has won their group seven world cups in a row? That's insane.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

This was the exact path that I saw through this group. Defeat Ghana, Draw Portugal, Lose to Germany and hope to win a tiebreaker. Obviously the way the games went the draw to Portugal was a gut punch, but we still did it.

I have to say that you have to applaud Portugal for their effort, between fighting to the end to draw with USA and defeating Ghana...they should be very proud of their effort in not giving up. Portugal was the only team in this tournament to win a game after having played a game in Manaus. Switzerland also have a chance to accomplish that in the Round of 16 but it doesn't seem likely.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

StubHub reports ticket sales to MLS games are up 63% over last year as soccer fever sweeps the nation.

That's a tangible result.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

defour sent off for belgium but he didn't play in either of the first two so prob not a big loss for them in the next game

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Belgium look more dangerous with 10 men than South Korea do with 11.

Edit to add:
GOAL! ISLAM SLIMANI WITH A HEADER! Akinfeev comes to try and claim Brahimi's free-kick but he misses the ball completely and Slimani is there to power home a towering header.
Man... Akinfeev is reputed to be one of the better keepers playing outside the top leagues, maybe even on par with the better keepers in the top leagues, but he hasn't shown it this tournament.

didn't realize algeria is actually highest ranked african country

with consecutive world cups and on brink of knockout round, appear to be on the rise

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

didn't look like there was a defender on the goal scorer regardless there but ya he looked foolish

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Anthony Vanden Borre has perhaps the best beard left in the tournament now that Pirlo is out.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

So the round of 16 is set.
AFC 0/4
CAF 2/5
CONCACAF 3/4
CONMEBOL 5/6
UEFA 6/13

Pretty pathetic showing for UEFA through the Group Stage...too bad 4 of the 5 CONMEBOL teams are stacked into the same quarter of the bracket or I don't see much hope UEFA.

Think the laser pointer had any influence?

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

really shouldn't come as a surprise that CONMEBOL and CONCACAF have done well in a South American world cup. that being said, the winner of a potential France-Germany QF could win the whole thing.

Could see an all CONCACAF QF in Mexico-Costa Rica. That would be something. Call me crazy, but while the US has a tough draw with Belgium/Argentina...neither of those teams has looked unbeatable.
