Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

We also got the better of the two brackets by getting second in the group.

Is having to face Argentina after going through (presumably) Belgium really better than going through (presumably) Algeria to get to France? Seems like a draw at best.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

We're through!!

You do realize that your post has two meanings?

We advance! not that we are done for. phew. :)

What Ronaldo took away from us with that exquisite cross, he took away from Ghana and gave back to us by scoring today.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

So is there something to be said about facing the most dangerous team (Germany) last instead of first since they're more likely to go all out scoring in the first game, thus the goal differential that made the difference.

It's funny to think that Ronaldo practically had more to do with us advancing than any US player, other than Timmay Howard.

1) Wets the bed against Germany, to help create the goal differential problem
2) Assists on the equalizer against us that temporarily kept us out of the knockout round.
3) Scores game-winner against Ghana to assure that we go through.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

So basically all that needed to happen was Portugal to be Ghana?

Well, if we were going to lose to Germany, we needed Por-Gha to be a tie. Or, for Portugal to win and for the combined goal differential in both games to be 3 or less (4, depending on how many goals were scored).

So... yes, but that's not entirely it.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

I believe that we will lose, but still move on, because Portugal conceded more goals to Germany than we did!
That is a mouthful of a chant.
Sooooooo Belgium or Algeria right?
Right. Belgium, unless Algeria beats Russia and South Korea beats Belgium, in which case Algeria. South Korea and Russia could still advance but cannot win the group.
We do get an extra day of rest if that helps.
That's probably better than anything at this point.
Definitely. In particular it looked like Jones was gassed even in the first half.

Beasley was... I dunno, I'm still not sold on him, but he wasn't our biggest problem today. For me, at this point the biggest problem is "who plays in the front four with Dempsey and Bradley"? Davis was invisible, Zusi skied a good shot and basically only contributes on set pieces, Bedoya was anonymous in the first two matches. Yedlin looked good because he had fresh legs but isn't really a midfielder, certainly not a 90-minute midfielder. Give Diskerud a shot at one of the wide slots? Aron at striker with Bradley behind him and Dempsey wide?

And I will admit that Beckerman has been much better than I was worried would be the case. For me, he's still the guy who should come out if we need a goal, but he's made important tackles and been secure in possession, which is basically what you need from your holding midfielder.
