:D

I was at a Dave Matthews Band concert last night up in Aubrun Hills- a few tried to start this chant. Kinda cool.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

I'm optimistic the U.S.does no worse than lose by one.

I'm not optimistic that Portugal will put up the good fight against Ghana.I could see Ghana winning by 3 easily.

The unrest in the Ghana camp could help. Both Boateng and Muntari have been booted out of camp.

I could easily see CR7 beating Ghana, but I still have an uneasy feeling.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Nvm, beaten to the punch.

I'm optimistic about today. I also think Algeria can make it out of Group H. If we play well enough, maybe we see them as an opponent.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

In fairness, I don't think that hurt's Ghana too much today. Kevin Prince-Boateng hasn't been all that effective, and Muntari was suspended today for accumulated yellows.

Still, for what Prince-Boateng is theoretically capable of and for what Muntari brings to the team (should they advance past today), that's a major blow to the team.

Here's hoping it distracts them against Portugal.

[Swallows pride]
Go get 'em, CR7.

So there's massive flooding in Recife and the rain isn't expected to let up. The pitch will be soggy, if not muddy.

Increases the odds of a low scoring affair.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

We're having a watch party here in our cafeteria today. It's going to be packed. And the city of Boston is having one on City Hall Plaza. All of this pre-excitement leads me to believe that we are all in for a major disappointment. Because that's what usually happens, see: last Sunday. Crap. I want to go watch but I feel I am like the Kiss of Death so I should stay away....................

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

I hate that I have to work today. Game starts at 8am here so I'll be watching on my phone.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

FIFA says the match will go on as planned. The USA just added Michael Phelps to the roster.
#IBelieveThatWeWillSwim

FIFA also announced a 9-game ban on Suarez, including a 4-month ban on any soccer activity. That hurts Liverpool, or whichever team John Henry sells him to.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Pictures of the flooding are starting to show up on Twitter. Does anything work in Brazil?

Reporters are saying the area near the stadium is fine, however they aren't sure how many fans will actually make it to the game.

The fire department I volunteer for has sump pumps. :D

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

...
Another Angle: While the article is a creative new take, there is a fundamental problem here. In specific cases, there's no reliable way to prove who was momentarily shaken up, and who was simply faking. When you're on the receiving end of a professional foul, you may genuinely need a moment or two to gather yourself before continuing on. Or, you may be working the ref, period.

Of course that’s true. And of course there’s a continuum between “momentarily shaken up” and “simply faking,” and a continuum between “gather[ing] yourself” and “working the ref” (and no reason you couldn’t be doing both). And where you are on the continuum can be affected by a player’s pain tolerance and (I think we’re seeing it here) cultural attitudes towards “diving”, especially on a message board that’s inhabited by hockey enthusiasts.

Looking at stoppages from the whole tournament was a good idea. At least that reduces the impact of being fooled by one or two "Primo La Scala Performances." And it does seem reasonable to believe that a high number of stoppages at least correlates with a willingness to fake. But it's not a perfect indicator. ...

Not only is it an imperfect indicator, but it’s still an “SSS” (small sample size). The data were collected through 32 games. That’s only two games per team, which means that the data could be distorted by who you happened to play, or what the conditions were. For example, if you play against a physical team and/or in hot, humid, conditions (the US has done both), you’d expect more stoppages. In short, this article makes for interesting discussion, but only the grossest of conclusions, like the one that EODS made.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Tweet reporting US team family and friends have decided not to attempt trip to stadium. Too treacherous.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

FIFA also will fine Suarez £65,000

They fined Nicklas Bendtner £80,000 for showing the waistband on his underwear after scoring a goal.
