The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Trying to decide if I'd prefer Ghana/Portugal having a winner or them tying.

Well if Germany goes 3-0, then it's pretty likely that Ghana could beat Portugal without hurting us, as they can only get 3 points at the most and aren't advancing (unless that happens and we lose to Portugal, in which case we all have one win and two losses and it goes down to goal differential).

As long as we get a result against Portugal and Germany wins against Ghana, we're good. Let the last match worry about itself later.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

If we beat Portugal and go into the game against Germany tied at 6 pts, just how bad of a whooping are we in for?

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Unless we crush Portugal, all Germany needs to win the group is a draw...

That's true, forgot about goal differential. Which makes no sense because I've been obsessing over situations where even a tie against Portugal might not be enough if Portugal blows out Ghana and Germany blows us out.

For some reason whenever that video plays it gets dusty...

Don't have national numbers yet, but USA-GHA did a 10 in Boston. Red Sox vs Twins did a 6.

ETA: National number just came in: a whopping 7.0 nationally for that game.

Is that really that big to see a 10 vs a 6 baseball game against the suckiest bunch of sucks who ever sucked?

Second highest rating every (behind US - England last year). Safe to say soccer has "arrived" in America. Although one could argue it's been here for 10 years.

fyp

Happy to say I was part of the 10. Now that the Stanley Cup is over, it's nice to have something to distract me until baseball is the only thing left to watch.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

Soccer has certainly arrived on the international level, but as of last year the WNBA is getting better numbers than MLS.

I'd be willing to bet the time zones have something to do with the rise in ratings, too. USA-England was on a Saturday afternoon in SA, while Algeria and Slovenia were morning games. Though I'm surprised the Ghana game didn't have the record with it also being a Saturday game.

However, our games will either be prime time or on weekends in Brazil. The last group game against Germany is a 3:00 so those might be iffy, but at least for the round of 16, no matter if we finish 2nd or somehow win the group (and assuming we don't self destruct the next two games) it'll be a 7:00 kick-off.

Do we really suck that bad? So bad that it's a super emotional thing how people get just scoring the winning goal in the first round of the WC against the other team in our group that isn't expected to advance?

I'm happy that we won, very happy.

But it's just the FIRST game.

This isn't the time for a slow clap.

On a Monday night with a 6pm start on a cable network the USA-GHA game pulled a 7.0 nationally.

On a Sunday night, in primetime on a major network, the far more established NBA drew a 6.8 rating for Game 5 of its championship.

I think the soccer world deserves credit for getting that many casual fans into the game. Can you imagine what the TV number will be for USA-POR on Sunday night?

Edit: The New York number was just announced.

USA-Ghana did a 14.4 in NYC on ESPN/Univision combined. The average of all Jets/Giants games last season in NY was 14.1 across FOX/CBS/NBC.

We need some kind of special video showing us celebrate beating Ghana? It's not Germany or Portugal. Or even getting into the second round. Just a game between the worst two teams in our group.

So far Portugal and Ghana are the two worst teams in the group. Worst teams in the GROUP OF DEATH!!!!

Thanks for your input, Mr. Wet Blanket. Excuse people for getting excited about a win. It happens so often for the US at the World Cup. I'm sure in Germany yesterday they just yawned and waited for the semi finals.

No. F* king. Shjt.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

That game was about as awful as a win could be. Couldn't maintain possession (62-38 Ghana). Couldn't create chances (outshot 21-8). Didn't win nearly as many headers as you'd like with our defenders having a height advantage over Gyan, Atsu and the Ayews (a huge advantage in the case of Cameron and Brooks). Bradley was uncharacteristically poor, as basically everyone has noted, and Beasley was awful. And, obviously, Jozy might be seriously hurt, Besler left with a hamstring issue too, and Bedoya looked gimpy at one point as well. Dempsey got kicked in the face (no call). Jones got taken down and more or less headbutted (no call).

And yet...

And yet...

Holy crap what a great feeling when Brooks scored the winner! Draw with Portugal and we're a good bet to go through. How about that?

That being said, Ronaldo would probably destroy our defense even with no teammates around him, especially if we play like that. It's going to be a white-knuckler, I'm afraid.

I think if Germany entered their B team, that B team would still win the group handily.

Weidenfeller
Durm, Westermann, Badstuber, Schmelzer
Schweinsteiger, Bender, Draxler, Grosskreutz
Klose, Volland

That team (Germany minus anyone who played yesterday) would win the group. And that is why I think Germany is going to win the whole thing. So, so much depth.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

So Algeria are known as the Desert Foxes? I'll refrain from any jokes about a general named Erwin because I don't want to get anyone fired.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

So I'm guessing Brazil/Mexico playing before the other Group H match is to give them the prime time slot in Brazil?
