Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

all great runs come to an end...for spain and casillas. del bosque and a couple others i'm sure.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

I'm thinking that means bye bye Espana

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

So playing some hypotheticals.

Assuming Chile pulls this out, they and the Dutch are both on to the next round, and their final game will be for who is first in the group.

With Brazil and Mexico tied in the other group, say Mexico comes in first and Brazil is second. Do you then purposely lose to get second and not face Brazil in the knockout?

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

only goal spain has scored was on a penalty they didn't deserve

When did soccer move to using the W-D-L rather than the usual W-L-D? It makes sense but I'm still not used to it.

I know IIHF does it too. Put the points producing results first??

Pecking order
Wins in regulation
Wins in extra time / shootout
Losses in Extra time / shootout
Ties
Losses

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

How can you blame them for trying to better their lives by getting in to watch Chile at Maracana? We shouldn't do anything about them now, they've made it...let them stay (/bad illegal immigration joke)

I think if you're Chile you want to avoid Brazil, I think if you're the Dutch, you want to face Brazil before they get rolling...

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

i believe spain won every knockout game of the last world cup 1-0

for as great as they are they don't typically put up huge goal totals. biggest difference has been poor defending and a brutal casillas. tough to see him go out like this.

Re: The FIFA World Cup Thread (Spoilers Welcome)

What was that thing Chile was doing where a player on their team would kick the ball so it went to another player on their team, and they could then continue with the ball towards the goal?
Wait - is that legal? /USSoccer Fan

Grant Wahl @GrantWahl:
Pretty straightforward: Expect Cristiano Ronaldo to play vs USA on Sunday. Don't expect Altidore to be ready to play.
