The end of leagues as we know?

Re: The end of leagues as we know?

The WCHA has not imploded yet! The loss of 2 teams is not an implosion! If Florida and Alabama left SEC football would the SEC be imploded? Hell no. It would be just fine with LSU and Auburn carrying the flag, just like the WCHA would be.

A more relevant comparison might be the Big XII. Now that Nebraska and Colorado have left, were Texas and Oklahoma to leave as well, it could lead to a rapid disintegration of the conference.

I wasn't born yet... was there this much butthurt when Hockey East broke off from the ECAC back in 1984?

Re: The end of leagues as we know?

Most of the RIT fans in the stands are either current or former students or staff? No way. So are most everyone besides the big dogs (Minn, Wisc, Mich, BC, BU). If I see someone wearing an SCSU jersey, I don't ask them IF they went to SCSU, I ask them WHEN they did. I think you'd be surprised at how low the percentage of SCSU, tUMD, BSU and MSU-M fans are in the stands that have no affiliation to the school other than geography.

That's fine. But is not relevant to the point I was making. I have no idea how much of those schools' fan bases are tied to the schools or not. I was just responding to someone chiding my school about our attendance only being a small percentage of our metro area's population. That is true, but most of Rochester's population is not currently targeted as potential customers, nor does it need to be. My point was that the comparison of "RIT drawing from the Rochester market" to "MSUM drawing from the Mankato market" is like apples and oranges for those institutions.
While there is a decent RIT alumni presence in the area, there is nowhere near the same presence (percentage-wise) of alumni as in a smaller "one-big-school" town like a Bemidji, or St. Cloud, or Mankato would have. So what you point out is not surprising, but still does not contradict my original point.

You know not of what you speak. The VAST majority of MSU students come from the Twin Cities and suburbs, and very few stay in Mankato after they graduate.

I said exactly that I don't know much about those markets. Even though what you say is probably true, I would still be willing to bet that there could be a larger MSU alumni presence in the Mankato area than the RIT alumni presence in the Rochester area (percentage-wise). Of course, maybe I should have left MSU out of that statement since I was responding to an SCSU fan (not an MSU fan) saying nearly everyone at their games went to school there. So is Mankato's fan base mostly students or mostly non-MSU-graduate-locals?

Re: The end of leagues as we know?

The WCHA didn't have a contingency plan for the situation a few years back when the volcano outside of Anchorage appeared ready to erupt. They had nothing in place on how to handle it if teams couldn't get to or from UAA. Nothing. UND AD Brian Faison said he had never been associated with a conference that didn't have some sort of contingency or emergency plans.

If a conference doesn't have plans for "acts of God" like that (or even for major upper midwest weather disturbances) and how to respond, don't you look at the commissioner and wonder if he's competent?

Re: The end of leagues as we know?

Enjoy your 12 team NCAA tournament. With 6 autobids and Hockey East/ECAC good for at least 3 at large bids, this decision should backfire gloriously in only a couple years.

Will you buy me a cookie if you are wrong? :)

And if Michigan Tech makes the NCAA Tournament within a few seasons will that change your opinion?

I won't buy you ****.

And Tech won't make the tourney because there won't be an autobid when programs start failing and there aren't enough teams to support a conference. Remember the CHA?

It's definitely not mostly students, but I have no idea where the non-student fan base went to college. All I can tell you is that the season-ticket holders who sit around me are NOT MSU alumni.

Re: The end of leagues as we know?

After UAH joins the new WCHA, Tech will have the auto bid they need.
In that league Mankato lasts 2 seasons, tops, UAH maybe 3-4. After that who knows how long MTU, SCSU, BSU and UAA can hang on. Not long without an autobid. The CCHA is worse off, LSSU, FSU and BGSU will be in tough shape and only last 2-4 seasons, NMU might last longer, but again, not that long without an autobid. Kiss 'em all goodbye.

Re: The end of leagues as we know?

Yes, UAH probably gets a home out of all of these changes.

And, with this new alignment there's:

a conference for start-ups to join,
a conference to aspire to in the west,
and a punching bag group headed by Jim Delany. :D

Re: The end of leagues as we know?

Someone explain to me how euthanizing a half dozen (or more) teams is supposed to be "good for the sport. Thanks, UND. :(
