The BTN had plenty of problems getting into the big markets. Eventually they did but not without legal battles and cutting deals.

A fat cat hockey conference may very well push several smaller, less affluent schools out of college hockey. Look at the bright side should this happen. These "left out" colleges can use the resources currently devoted to training students for a career in hockey to prepare students for careers in business and (non-sports) professions.

But 1 flight > 2 flights, shorter flights > longer flights, and driving > shorter flights. Mike Lee has said that while he could have gone to plenty of other schools, the fact that his family in Roseau could come down to St. Cloud easily was one of his big deciding factors.

Many of the recruits who are above average or elite will play for both schools because the tv exposure from the BTN. Like I said before every scout in the NHL, family and friends will be able to watch all the BTHC games in North America. The kicker is the BTN will only schedule member vs. member games. Ouch!

I just disagree with this logic. There are endless instances where recruits in any sport have a chance to go play for teams in conferences with lots of tv exposure. BTN exposure for basketball and football are perfect examples. Just because mom and dad can sit at home and watch the kid on the BTN doesn't translate into top recruits flooding every team in that conference.

It's nice being on tv. On the other hand, no wants to be seen on tv playing goalie for a 4-20 team every week. I can tell you as a UND fan, in or out of what will be left of the WCHA, I do not lose one second of sleep over lost recruiting opportunities against Penn St. and Ohio St.

Also, if everyone is hitching the success of the BTHC to the BTN, I'd be careful with that. TV programming like we know it is going the way of the dinosaur. I already watch virtually every UND game just about anywhere I can get a computer connection. In my lifetime (and I'm probably a heck of a lot older than most others on this site) we're going to be walking around with our I pad type devices watching streaming content put out by each of our respective schools. There will be the Gopher network, the Badger network, etc... The wave of the future

Well it really isnt out of the goodness of their hearts they just say it is :D

Deals will be made and sometimes the cheapest option is the best one. Minnesota and Wisconsin are going to need games at home and on the road. The best way to guarantee cheap non-con road games (and interest at the gate for home games) is to keep games against the local schools. I mean Minnesota could put together an entire non-con schedule of home and road games without one flight if they choose just playing Minnesota schools. Fiscally speaking it makes a ton of sense.

It helps that a large number of the fans enjoy the road trips to those spots as well and are not exactly pleased with losing the conference games with them. This satisfies that anger, keeps the Minnesota schools afloat and keeps the athletic budget down.

Saying that though, and knowing how the U is...they will refuse this because it makes too much sense for Maturi ;)

I believe that you are correct. I very rarely call for people's jobs, but if Bruce McLeod has to sacrifice for the sake of 10 schools, all their players, all the fans and the entirety of college hockey, I hope he does it. If that's what this is all about, the UND/DU leadership is ridiculously petty and should be ashamed of themselves for putting that many students (players) and fans in danger. I would think that an educational institution would be responsible than that.

Depending on the zero's between the number and the decimal, plenty of colleges would love to have one way trips. You already see it with BCS Football.

The thought of kicking the mid-majors to the curb just to make a power conference makes me ill.

Depends on the amount of money. They get huge amoutns for football and basketball, but can hockey afford that? One game a week on BTN isn't going to raise that much money so schools are going to have to make less money to have that approach. Especially when the big ten teams have plenty of teams that are a cheap bus trip away.

The Integer Network's problem was not getting <em>into</em> the big markets, it was getting <em>paid in</em> the big markets.
