The definitive tournament speculation thread

Re: The definitive tournament speculation thread

I understand this, but until we see it done, I have a hard time believing that the NCAA will ever take this route.

I also wouldn't be surprised to see four west teams in, no matter what the numbers may say. There just aren't enough games between the two regions to emphatically do an 8-3 split. It's like instant replay in football: there needs to be irrefutable evidence to reverse a call.

1) They also have never forced the top 2 seeds in a region to play each other in a play-in while giving the 3rd seed the BYE.

2) Unless a favorite loses their conference, currently there is no way a 4th team will get in. There is not a western team that stands a chance at the last Pool C spot based on the current numbers. That may change once more games are played, but currently 7/4 is a pipedream.

3) I have no idea what point you were trying to make with your last sentence.

Re: The definitive tournament speculation thread

Wick higher seed than the Cards ??
1) Defending National Champions
2) Wick has a larger traveling fan base (AARP members)
3) McShane has more pull than Delventhal ??

Bruce Delventhal,PlattsburghStateUniversityofNewYork,chair
Timothy Bald,St.NorbertCollege
Michael McShane,NorwichUniversity
Brett Petersen,GustavusAdolphusCollege

My analogy was obscure, but I was trying to point out that it is very hard to differentiate between eastern and western teams for pool c. the committee often makes subjective choices when weighting the numbers.

I guess I'm just saying that I think - with the final four in the west - that the western committee is going to do everything in its power to get two western teams to Ridder. I understand that by sending Adrian to NY it would give them a chance, but a chance isn't going to be good enough for them.

That decision is made by the regional advisory committee, and neither McShane nor Delventhal are allowed to participate in decisions involving their own team.

The Committee of Paranoia and Conspiracy will investigate any favorites losing in their conference tournaments.

Re: The definitive tournament speculation thread

Hamline and Adrian can't play each other in the Play-in. They are more than 500 miles apart. Also the NCAA wont put W1 SNC in a play in vs W2 and give W3 Hamline a BYE. Adrian can go to Elmira without flying which allows the top two teams in each region to get a BYE to the Quarters.

I guess I never really thought about it before, but I never realized that Adrian was less than 500 miles from Elmira. I read this a few times and thought "What the heck is he talking about? How is St.Paul further away from Adrian than Elmira?" Big states...that's how :)

It was a big discussion last year, too. According to NCAA's calculations, Oswego only falls out of the 500-mile category by 19 miles.

The NCAA could consider Oswego's Metro Center in Syracuse as part of "campus" - that would knock 40 miles off, give or take...

Hey, if anybody would, it would be the NCAA...;):D

Re: The definitive tournament speculation thread

You guys are saying Utica is #1 in "Pool c" and some expected division winners would have to not win the "AQ" meaning lose in the playoffs. So some "underdogs" would get the "AQ" in Pool "A" knocking say some1 like Oswego to pool "B" or"C" ??? Am I even close in my assumptions ?? If so how many expected "AQ's" would have to lose for Utica to get bumped out ? Is UC pretty much in? What are the chances ??

As of right now, Utica would be in no matter what. Even if Oswego and SNC lost and took up the first two pool c bids, Utica would still be slated in at #3 for pool c.

But, who knows what another loss will do for Utica's profile. It will also depend on when they lose and to whom.

Pool B is reserved for those teams that do not belong to a league that qualifies for an AQ (automatic qualification) slot. Leagues have to have seven members and have played as a league for a minimum of two years before they can apply for an AQ (also known as Pool A). The number of Pool B bids depends on the number of teams involved. This year it is one = teams in the ECAC West and MASCAC are eligible for it. Pool C is for the teams who don't qualify through Pools A or B. The number available this year is 3. For both Pool B and C, the decision is made based on the NCAA criteria. The NCAA rankings represent the regional advisory committee's evaluation of the teams based on the the NCAA criteria.

I wish we used something like the PWR - in fact we used to, but then the NCAA changed things so that all DIII sports follow the same procedures, which is the origin of the Pool A,B,C system. To add to the shifting landscape - next year there will be no Pool B for men's hockey because the MASCAC will become eligible for a Pool A slot (AQ), thus leaving only the ECAC West without a AQ. This means that there will be one less spot available for the ECAC West to fit into.

The DIII process is definitely mind numbing, but it does create a great deal of entertaining discussion.

Re: The definitive tournament speculation thread

The NCAA should just hire NUProf to do his computer rankings for all DIII sports, and use those to determine who makes the playoffs!

You just like where I've got Elmira right now :)
