The Dead Thread: Yep. Still Dead.

Re: The Dead Thread: Yep. Still Dead.

Well, to a point: They took on a different weltanschauung in the 2000s as evidenced by their unforgiving review of society today.

" ... you don't want to work, you want to live like a king, but the big bad world don't owe you a thing."

I'd call that a fairly conservative take.

Perhaps, but I've always felt that entire song was specifically targeted at Hollywood. And more pointedly given its 1994 release, Courtney Love.

Re: The Dead Thread: Yep. Still Dead.

No other group could harmonize like the Eagles of the 70's.

CSN called. They said shut up, we're listening to the Beach Boys.

The Eagles wrote the highest quality elevator music, and for that they sold a trillion albums and made a trillion dollars. And they managed to do that without even, apparently, descending into being horrible people. They deserve a star in the Business Hall of Fame. There is absolutely nothing objectionable about them. The next time I hear "Take it Easy" my blood pressure will drop and I will live longer. For that they have my thanks.

Arguably two of the best.

The Eagles are one of those groups that seem to cause listeners to fall into either the love 'em or hate 'em category. I honestly don't remember the last time I might have actually put one of their songs or records on my music players to listen to. But whether you love them or hate them, no one can deny that the Eagles were the soundtrack of the 1970's. For me, as someone whose high school years were during that time, their songs evoke strong memories.

They were the soundtrack of the AM 70's, yes. But there is easy listening in every decade. The soundtrack of the 70s as a distinct musical decade is punk, funk, and disco.

I have those same memories. Everybody's parents owned an Eagles album in the 70s, and the cute but kinda dumb local girl who only gave her first handjob in college but you didn't know that yet and were still hoping was into them and Fleetwood Mac.

No, they were horrible people. Both Frey and Henley. Arrogant, privileged "our chit don't stink" egotistical prima donnas. Pretty much your typical Hollywood a-holes.

Here's a link to an article about a band who i adore, opening for them, and their impression of The Eagles.

Yup. I believe HBO did a 90 minute special on the group a couple of years ago. They came across as first class pr1cks. Self absorbed narcissists.

Sold tons of music and it will be played for a long time. I don't hate it but I haven't heard any in a long time until every one on ESPN radio was playing it for bumper music.

Walsh? That would really disappoint me. I loved him in The James Gang and have always assumed he dumpster-dove with the Eagles for the money, like Steve Martin making Father of the Bride.

More money, more cocaine.

Walsh was high most of that decade. He's reported as being a fairly congenial man when he was sober, but could really lose himself while high - trashing rooms with the best rockers of any era. Now he's reported as being completely sober and a really good guy. Schmit was the high-pitched vocals they brought in to replace Meisner, and he was, by all accounts, just a go-along sort of guy, happy to have a steady gig and making good money.

Frey and Henley had certain plans for the group, and a couple others had different plans, Meisner left due to health reasons (reportedly), and then there were disputes over money. Felder left because he just wanted to have a good time and play music while Frey and Henley were pushing for a certain political candidate (a Senator). That was in 1980, when the band essentially broke apart. Leadon, Felder's replacement, I think, officially left the band because of a money dispute following the Hell Freezes Over tour. Basically, Frey and Henley were taking larger shares of the pot because they were the only two to make names for themselves in their solo careers, claiming to be the only ones keeping the band's name relevant for those 18 or 19 years between appearances. Walsh and Schmit were okay with that because it got them back on stage playing the music they loved, Leadon was not.

Does Zeppelin not count?

Different crowd. The Eagles were the official band of middle class parents -- the house band at United Colors of Benetton. They waved the AM flag with Elton John and god knows who else -- Seals and Croft maybe? Dan Fogelberg? Jesus, what a horrid decade...

Zep, the Who, Pink Floyd and the Dead all had their bite of the apple, assuming the apple is only white people (which you could safely assume if you were talking about anything with national breadth). Even the Stones were diddling around in the top 40 of all places, although they were running on empty for half the decade. Oh, my god, I wish I hadn't thought of Jackson Browne. How did he miss being in the Eagles?

Anyway, Elvis probably outsold them all -- a sad lounge act who checked out about the time the ABA folded. Heck, the Beatles may have outsold them on sheer nostalgia.

Let's just say the 70s has the greatest inversion of talent to sales of any decade in history. No wonder they thought rock was dead.
