75 World Series games. 259 WS at bats. The man spent the equivalent of half a season just playing in the World Series.

I think Whitey is the last big one left from those great 50's Yankee teams.

35 of Yogi's best quotes here: http://nypost.com/2015/09/23/35-of-yogi-berras-most-memorable-quotes/

Including....

"If you don’t know where you are going, you might wind up someplace else.”

“When you come to a fork in the road, take it.”

“You should always go to other people’s funerals, otherwise, they won’t come to yours.”

"I never said most of the things I said."

I have to think that the man made a few gaffes that were honest mistakes, but then started playing to character just to have fun with both friends and media alike. Some of the things he said were just too funny to have not been practiced.

You better only but it into four pieces, I could never eat six. Come on! The man was loveable comedy gold!

My personal favorite: "Nobody goes there anymore. It's too crowded."

One of a kind! I still use his one about slicing the pizza in four pieces because he wouldn't be able to eat eight.

Here I thought it was about a pie - like apple or pecan - and involving six, not four. It's been a long time since I came across that quote.

The quotes are fun, and certainly made him unique, but he was also a helluva catcher.

I have always clicked onto this thread to keep up with the passing of the celebrities. But sometimes it just hurts as i lose my heroes. Last year it was Stan Musial, my all time favorite and one of the best representatives of what a professional athlete should personify, a real gentleman. Now Yogi who I grew up idolizing in NY in the 50's. Every one of my friends was a Mickey Mantle fan as he seemed to be the center of attention. For me, it was all about Yogi who was not only a very good catcher (on some very good teams) but an entertaining man who no one could ever root against. Goodbye to another hero and i have so few left.

I was surprised to see. I always figured he was sort of an average, journeyman type who filled a niche on those Yankee teams. one of those workman-like, solid, team guys that everyone needs. It amazed me when I read that he won MVP three times. Astonishing, really, when you consider the talent that was on those teams.

Re: The Dead thread - God sorts 'em out!

Not even close. For the majority of the great Yankee run of the 50's, up until about 1958-1959, when he was in his prime, Yogi hit clean-up in that order. Not Mantle. It was Yogi. Casey Stengel once said "I never play a game without my man in the lineup". He was referring to Yogi. Reggie Jackson was wrong. Yogi was the straw that stirred the drink. He should have had a 4th MVP in 1950.

Stan Musial

There's another one who was better than most people realize.

One more Yogi-ism from today's Detroit News:

One Hall of Fame ceremony saw Berra seated next to pitcher Whitey Ford. As soft music played, the names of all of the former major leaguers who had died in the past year scrolled down a video screen.

“Whitey,” Berra said, “I sure hope I never see my name up there.”

Speaking of Yogi. I got to thinking about the World Series starting in 1949
1949 - Yankees/Dodgers
1950 - Yankees/Phillies
1951 - Yankees/Giants
1952 - Yankees/Dodgers
1953 - Yankees/Dodgers
1954 - Giants/Indians
1955 - Dodgers/Yankees
1956 - Yankees/Dodgers
1957 - Braves/Yankees
1958 - Yankees/Braves
1959 - Dodgers/White Sox
1960 - Pirates/Yankees
1961 - Yankees/Reds
1962 - Yankees/Giants
1963 - Dodgers/Yankees
1964 - Cardinals/Yankees
1965 - Dodgers/Twins
1966 - Orioles/Dodgers

So from 1949 - 1958 a NY team was in tbe World Series. For the duration above, at least one team with NYC roots was in the World Series.

For those of us who grew up around NYC during that time, we can be thankful that MLB & NBC did not have a home team blackout for TV like the NFL and NBA.

An amazing stat --- Yogi struck out only 414 times in more than 8,300 plate appearances over 19 seasons
The one I heard last night I think is even more amazing -- he caught both ends of a double header 117 times. I don't know if that's a record, but it certainly should be. Talk about unreachable numbers.
