The Dead Thread 2024

"Reports of my death have been exaggerated."

Kind of a fucking weird April Fools joke... 🐢
Not if you’re a crypto scammer. It’s niche and wholesome enough of a topic to make people naive. Why would fake the death of a tortoise? I questioned if it was an April Fools joke when I first heard about it yesterday, but then some other media picked up on it, and again, what an odd topic. Though in some ways that makes it the perfect April Fools.

And I fell for it.

Me too, because it has no aspect of what makes an April Fools' Day joke good. (1) It wasn't a "gotcha!," (2) It wasn't slap yourself in the head "I shoulda known, I'm an idiot", and (3) It wasn't funny in retrospect.

Just mean and stupid, like the times.

Got it. So these people send say fake alerts that your child was rushed to the hospital for, you know, a joke.

That tracks.

In retrospect, cracking down on elementary school beat downs was probably a mistake. Kids like this used to be corrected by the community.

One of the founding trio, with DJ Kool Herc and Grandmaster Flash. Also a founder of Universal Zulu Nation, which was at least good-adjacent during a very bad time for NYC and the soil for Tribe, KRS-One, Rakim, Public Enemy, and a bunch more.

The art and the man are separate. At least they better be or we lose about half of all great art.

So yeah, screw him, but god bless the music and activism.

Joy Harmon.

Ex VA Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax and wife in murder-suicide.

Fairfax was accused of sexual assault in 2019, right around the time Gov. Ralph Northam's blackface photos surfaced. The two scandals split the VA Dems over whether either or both should resign, allowing Glenn Youngkin to CRT his way to the mansion. I was active in VA Democratic politics at the time. It was super ugly. There was no way to have a sane conversation about it. That was about the time I stopped talking about politics in public at all. High risk, low reward in a state of ammosexuals.

"Bob Kevoian" of the syndicated radio show The Bob and Tom show passed this afternoon at 75. He actually retired from the show several years ago though Tom has continued with the rest of the crew. I grew up listening to this show every morning in the 90s and early 2000s. They were based in Indianapolis and I grew up in Indiana where no matter where you were there was a station that played their show. They regularly featured several big name comedians and many who were not yet big names. Lots of great laughs. When I moved to Idaho there was a station here that played the show in syndication until a year or two ago. I regularly listen to a Bob and Tom Pandora station that features segments and bits from the show going back to the 90s.

When I moved to PA in 2000 I heard Bob and Tom out there and it was only then I realized the show was syndicated. In its earliest day it was at its funniest. It also had a much more "Indiana" feel then. Later years it was only when the Indy 500 or Brickyard 400 were coming up and they talked racing did it have the same "Indiana" feel to me.

Here and there when I was still living in Indiana and would pass through Indianapolis, you could hear them on their home station, Q95. The show would often last another 30-60 minutes and would focus on Indiana stuff during that. I remember catching one of those times on a drive through when they sent Chick McGee down to the state fair and he took some special train and did a remote broadcast while riding the train and arriving. I can't remember any of the specific jokes and what not, but I remember it being hilarious.

The commercial breaks on the syndicated version were also longer than the Q95 version as they would give local weather and that not for a minute or 2 on the local version when coming back from commercial.

They have apparently spent all of today's show doing a tribute. It is available on Youtube along with other tributes. The have clips on the station going back almost 20 years. And live shows available from about 6 years back it looks like.

I have driven several times across country each way and between West Virginia and Colorado the only radio I ever heard was Pentacostal and Baptist preachers screaming about hell.

I remember watching him play for the Orlando Predators in 1999 in Albany against the Firebirds both in the regular season and ArenaBowl. He’d get mercilessly taunted with J-E-TS JETS JETS JETS taunts by 13000 people! One of my buddies had floor (field level) seats and caught a ball that Nagle of course overthrew. The kid was a Jets fan and Nagle was kind enough to sign the ball for him.
