The Dead Thread 2024

From happier days:

"My eyes are up here..."

My father, age 86. Likely heart failure, though will never be 100% sure. Thankful he didn't suffer, though I'd been dreading the call for a couple of months and had a pause every time my parents number showed up on the caller ID until it finally happened today. According to the nurses, he had breakfast, went down for a nap, and never woke up.

He had a long and fulfilling life, playing golf and tennis until his knees finally gave out at 85. He traveled extensively in retirement, enjoyed very dry martinis and very cheap wine, and never met a hand he couldn't shake. He was a lifelong Iowa Hawkeye fan, having been a double graduate for both his undergraduate business and graduate hospital administration degrees.

He's survived by his spouse of over 50 years, two sons, three grandchildren and countless friends he met across the country and the globe in his work and travels.

Commander Jim Lovell, 97

He was born one year after Lindbergh's flight, and he orbited the moon at 40. Think about that leap is that short a span of time. My Mom was 1 for the Lindbergh flight and 43 for the first Apollo landing. She is still alive.

He has one of my favorite quotes of all time:

From now on we live in a world where man has walked on the Moon. It's not a miracle; we just decided to go.

Exactly. Stop yapping and whining about the money and get to it. When we decide to, we move quickly.

Saw something about him yesterday. It was after Apollo 13, he was speaking at some dinner or something, and he was asked whether he would ever go on another space flight. He said his answer would have been an unqualified yes, but out of the crowd, he saw the raised arm of his wife giving him the thumbs down.
