The Completely Unofficial Pre-Pre-Season Polls - 2010-2011 Edition

Re: The Completely Unofficial Pre-Pre-Season Polls - 2010-2011 Edition

Prez and Prof,

Hope to meet you two at Homecoming this weekend. Maybe at the football game, soccer presentations or at the HOF reception. I will ask Charlie to point you out.

Bill

I'll be at the HOF too to recognize Hound. :D

And the 2000 team also...

Sounds good. I'll be around busting my butt covering the five athletic events we have going on. But I definitely will be at the volleyball and football games.

Hopefully I can shake this head cold I've got going on by the weekend.

Take it to the Bank (and watch it fade away)

I suppose it’s about time I put-up my own (a few weeks late!). I have a feeling that the official pre-season poll will be out by next weekend ('WAG' - no later than Tuesday 10/19):

1. Norwich - Theirs until they “lose it” (which could be as soon as Primelink)
2. St. Norbert - Token NCHA team ( :p ) [j/k... see #8]
3. Elmira - Going-out on a limb here, may not get me many preseason pts, but I expect this by year-end
4. Oswego - A key loss or two in the lineup, but still strong
5. Middlebury - Hey, they’re Middlebury
6. Adrian - “Safe 6”... A good showing in Northfield, they’ll be higher. A bad showing, quite possibly out of the top 10
7. Plattsburgh - Just can’t get a read on this team this year. Anticipating a mid-season “lull” in January
8. UW-Stevens Point - What good is a poll without 2 NCHA teams in it! Why the Pointers? – They’re baaa-aaack!!
9. Bowdoin - Will hang here, and possibly improve if they can get by that pesky Colby weekend before the break
10. Hobart - Just for poops and giggles... some ECAC West ‘love’

Wanted to put a MIAC team in the mix (I think I always have in the past), but I just do not see a team standing-out this year.

Re: The Completely Unofficial Pre-Pre-Season Polls - 2010-2011 Edition

Question? Why are we all only picking 10 teams when the poll is 15?

Re: The Completely Unofficial Pre-Pre-Season Polls - 2010-2011 Edition

Because it's unofficial.

10 vs. 15

10 vs. 15

Why 10 and not 15? I thought this was discussed in prior year’s threads, but in the only threads that I could access (2004-5 & 2005-6), I did not see any discussions posted. Strange thing is, it was around that time that USCHO went from ranking 10 to 15 as well. Odd that it was not discussed in the most painful detail back then!

While I like Hammer’s answer best (yours is good too, Prof! :) ), I guess there are a couple of additional reasons we (I) have always stayed with 10 and not 15:
 • It's easier
 • Less of that pesky math for me ( :D )
 • I’m a “traditionalist” (and old, so tradition goes back a ways!)
 • ’Scoring’ from years-past is apples-to-apples (no “modern era” changes)

But by all means, if anyone is feeling a wee-bit masochistic and wants to go the extra mile by providing above-and-beyond what is expected of them, please feel free to put-up a top 15. This has been done by some in the past.

In reviewing the prior threads, I would like to add what a welcome relief it is to not have any of the typical 'urinating competitions' in the thread (so far) this year! Then again, those “discussions” were somewhat entertaining:

For all we know, it's part of his job description. Charlie?????

I just can't see how people seem to think that plattsburgh is deserving of a higher ranking than Oswego. After we downright shellacked them in all the games at the campus centrelast season, and beat them handily at their own barn, after our evidently superior recruiting class [granted we lost 2 seriously talented players] can anyone explain the rationale??

Longevity. A team's reputation in the early polls is influenced by how long you've been good. If two programs are close, the one with the better long-term reputation gets the advantage.

I suppose...but barring that. I still think that Oz is the better team this year. I've been following these forums for a while so I know better then to open up that pandoras box. But all that aside I'm pumped to see the head to head match ups again this year.

-Plattsburgh has 2 good goaltenders, Oswego only has one.

-Selleck, Lyon, Musselwhite, Dormo, KGT all gone.

-Historically Plattsburgh has beaten Oswego year in and year out. Last year wasn't necessarily a fluke, but with how Plattsburgh has been a consistent NCAA tournament participant, I'll put them over Oswego until games start.

After watching Plattsburgh taking it to teams before last year, I'm not confident enough in Oswego to put them above Platty in the beginning.
