Re: The "Complain About ESPN" Thread

Watching SC and apparently Tim Tebow's post game tweet was important enough to the story of Florida's victory over LSU to mention.

Guess they hadn't mentioned Tebow in 12 hours or something...
12 hours? Somebody had to have gotten sacked for that...

Did anyone see their new 30 for 30 film "Broke"? Those films are done right. This film was for anyone who asks how an athlete who made tens of millions of dollars in their career, can blow all that money? Well as shown by the film quite easily.

Wow, ESPN is in Full Panic Mode. The world might end today; or at least the NYY's might be out of the playoffs. about 1/2 hour of SC is devoted to either what they can do to come back, asking A-Rod how it feels to be benched, or already having him traded to the Marlins. I dodn't remember hearing who they are playing, but I guess it is some midwestern team from a flyover state.

All is well, all is well. The KHL is now on ESPN3.

0-0 after 1 SKA St. Petersburg vs. Sibir Novosibirsk

Re: The "Complain About ESPN" Thread

"Top Headlines" on ESPN.com today, the day after a historic NL playoff pennant series, in order:

*Marshall to Suh: Cutler hit not cool (NFL)
*NFLPA asks Tagliabue to prove neutrality (NFL)
*Notre Dame QB Golson to start against Sooners (CFB)
*Earnhardt Jr (concussion) cleared to start (NASCAR)
*Red Sox introduce Farrell (MLB, but off the field)
*PA authorities move Sandusky to state prison (CFB)
*NHLPA unaware GMs talked with players (NHL)
*RG3 doesn't hold himself to rookie mindset (NFL)
*Holmgren won't rule out return to coaching (NFL)
*GMs choose Heat to repeat (NBA)

I know ESPN paid all that money to have pro football. But a Game 7 doesn't even make the top ten? That's pathetic!

Red Sox/Yankees are a separate category, unrelated to the sport they play.

If you had any doubt about where ESPN stood on college hockey, this piece on the cancelation of the Winter Classic and associate activities doesn't even mention the GLI:

Lockout Would Denigrate Winter Classic.

Edit: It just occurred to me that the GLI isn't cancelled but will be played at JLA as always. :o

ESPN only trots it out as a part of airing a good chunk of college championships to get the BCS title game. Makes me wish NBCSN would get to broadcast the tourney, but that's a pipe dream.

I keep getting the impression that NBCSN will make a major push for sports once the contracts start to come up for bid again. Between the Super Bowl and NCAA games, I have to think they're going to go for the jugular.

They will.

They've been cut off at the pass by ESPN and FOX, entities that don't want Comcast owning large numbers of sports events and being in a position to demand cuts in subscriber fees to ESPN and FOX. They've worked together on both the Big XII and PAC-12 deals, leaving the current remnants of the Big East negotiations the only college sports available before the Big Ten in 2015-16, and the Big Ten is not going to NBCSN when they already have the BTN. The NFL is set until the end of the decade, baseball just re-upped with FOX and TBS primarily with some ESPN, and the NBA is likely to keep their current split of ESPN/Turner as Turner is the company working with them on NBA network.

NBCSN did manage to pick up the English Premier League...for a 300% pay hike.

Re: The "Complain About ESPN" Thread

My memory from four years ago isn't perfect, but the last time there was a tie in the NFL, all ESPN programs were about 4x as intolerable the next day.

The last NFL tie was more or less the straw that broke the camel's back in my then-developing hatred for Mike Greenberg and for Around the Horn, specifically.

In other words, I would advise extra caution be taken in avoiding ESPN programming tomorrow.

I think that was more because Donovan McNabb didn't know the rules.

Re: The "Complain About ESPN" Thread

Yahoo gets it:

ESPN suspends Rob Parker, but will the network’s ethics ever change?

ESPN should not be congratulated for suspending Parker, though that's undoubtedly the desired reaction in Bristol. Instead, those within the network who have decided to abdicate any sense of journalistic responsibility in favor of a craven desire for ratings and "buzz" should probably take a few minutes and consider that they created and nourished an environment by which Rob Parker, who had made multiple professional missteps before, could thrive by saying stupid stuff and getting away with it. ESPN should not feel good about suspending Parker, because ESPN had no qualms about re-running "First Take" on Thursday with Parker's comments entirely intact. Those in control had a chance to run damage control, but they didn't. And primarily, they didn't because they didn't see the need.

ESPN didn't suspend Parker because his comments ran afoul of the network's ethics. They did so because his comments did not get the desired reaction.
In the end, whether Rob Parker is fired from the network or not, it's up to ESPN to decide where it wants to go from here. Does ESPN simply replace Parker with another idiot to serve its desire for ethically challenged programming, or will this serve as a wake-up call to the fact that when you put people like Skip Bayless and Stephen A. Smith in charge of a sandbox and let them run roughshod all they want, you're going to get this kind of garbage over and over again?

Given ESPN's recent history, we're going to assume that the network will do away with the effect, and ramp up the cause. And that will leave the rest of us to wonder whether "Embracing Debate" is a worthwhile endeavor at all.

Re: The "Complain About ESPN" Thread

Over a half hour into this edition of SportsCenter and the only acknowledgement of the NHL lockout tentatively being settled has been 5 seconds via the crawl.

I long ago gave up on regularly watching ESPN for anything other than live sports or an occasional showing of 30 for 30 if the topic was of personal interest, but figured this would be a breaking news story of enough importance that perhaps some info could be gleaned by tuning in. Nada. Zip. And when they finally take a break from the NFL what do we get? Alabama/Notre Dame. OK, it's a big story, but nothing new, we've known about the specifics of this game for over a month now. Surely the next topic will be the NHL lockout?!? Oh wait, there's some regular season NBA to discuss. Well, maybe after the break? Not if you go by what they are saying is coming up, as SportCenter will return to Miami...

God I freeking hate ESPN. They have gone from must see TV for me to registering about as much as the BBC network. Is the NHL so irrelevant that this story really DOESN'T matter more than this?

I have taken the TV off ESPN now. Too bad a few million more people won't do the same thing.

Re: The "Complain About ESPN" Thread
