wouldnt the new england belt be up for grabs too because Yale is in New Haven, CT?

Shouldn't the current WCHA belt be retired since Wisconsin holds it?

When we started this the same question came up because Michigan State had the WCHA Belt when they left in 1981. It was decided to award a new Belt to the winner of the next WCHA which happened to be the NCAA championship game between Wisconsin and Minnesota. MSU eventually lost to a WCHA team. I think that the same thing should be done here. The first new WCHA won't be until next season, and there will probably be several the same day. In the past, we regarded all the winners do get Belts that were eventually united, since we ahd no idea which game finished first. This time we will probably know, but I think that we should go for consistency.

One could regard the existing WCHA as retired, but WCHA will probably eventually play someone still in the WCHA, and it is just one more Belt to track. :D . (I haven't checked if their schedule is up yet.)

Sounds reasonable, the old belt may go back and forth between Wisconsin and Minnesota before one of them plays someone in either the new or old WCHA and loses it. I guess the old WCHA belt could end up for a period in the NCHC if it isn't first unified with a new WCHA member and it were to pass on to an old WCHA member in the NCHC.

I am pretty sure that no other former WCHA can get the old Belt from Wisconsin, at least that is what appears to have been done since it took 3 years (see posts 15 and 16 of this thread) before the Belts were unified. It could be done either way, and just retiring it also makes sense.

The new-look WCHA will only be taking the Top 8 into the playoffs, so if the #9 or 10 seed holds it after the regular season, then an Alternate will have to be started.

If it got into the NCHC (nothing to stop MN or WI from facing CC, DU, UMD, UND, UNO or SCSU in NCAAs), it could possibly stay in the NCHC for a an extended period without being unified.

What about the Big Ten? Namely because it had never been an official conference prior to this. I'm guessing the belts would be unified fairly quickly.

Why an alternate belt? Why can't hte belt just lie dormant for the offseason?

Someone pointed out that although it didn't have a hockey league before, it like the Ivy League does exist. You are right that a new Belt would be unified with it quickly. The same will go for the NCHC Belt, although that may take a bit longer because there are more teams.

Historically a league playoff winner has gotten an alternate belt if the actual one doesn't make the league playoffs. In the recent past, this hasn't happened.

The first WCHA games of the 2013-14 season are Michigan Tech vs Northern Michigan and Bemidji State vs Alabama-Huntsville on 10/25/2013. Alabama-Huntsville plays Wisconsin 12/27 & 12/28 while Northern Michigan plays Wisconsin 1/3 & 1/4.
