The Bible: Real, Fiction, or somewhere in between?

There is an acid test for the existence of God, and it will come next weekend. If the Sioux fail to win a banner, that will be conclusive evidence that there is no god--at least a just one.

If the Sioux win, I suppose that still leaves open the possibility that there is no god, but the chances would have to increase quite a bit, it seems to me.

Go God!

That UND ever reached 5 already proved there isn't one.

However should they win it all you're precisely the type of fan for which I'd truly be happy.

From your perspective, that's pretty tight logic. :) On the other hand, the fact that it has taken UMinn so long to get to 5 is pretty convincing proof there is one.

Could this be a God with a sadistic sense of humor, or is the world a sidewalk on a sunny day and God an 8-year-old with magnifying glass?

Remind me again...What does the rabbit hiding chocolate eggs have to do with Zombie Jesus?

Its an avenue to engage children in a holiday when they are too young otherwise...and has become tradition. Enjoy your Easter anyways!

Oh, I thought it was an attempt to commercialize a holiday in order to enhance profits.

A question to Christians out there. How do you perceive much of the negativity against Christians? As a progressive, I've been disappointed to what appears to be modern day bigotry directed at Christians...primarily from the left.

And I get irritated by the bigotry that's thrown my way for not being Christian. likely much more than what you perceive seeing as how you're still a member of the largest religious affiliation in the country while people like me are still a small minority. Suck it up, Buttercup.

How horrible it must be for them to dominate every part of public life. Have the entire country stop to celebrate their blatantly coopted holidays. To have their organizations be tax free and ignore the conditions of that state. To be so powerful they can create official/social religious tests for office. To have unlimited funds backing groups attempting to white wash history in their favor.

It's just... I don't know how they can stand it.

It's their cross to bear.

Its pretty obvious non believers are spoiling for a fight. Don't think you're going to get one. A discussion maybe.

Any Christians have a pov?

You've got the general rhythm right -- incite then back off -- but overall Flag still trolls better. I'll give it a B plus.

I don't perceive a lot of negativity towards Christians themselves (aside from this thread :)), but I live in this little bubble out here between Madison and Milwaukee where some small towns have 4 Christian Churches. Here at work we get into debates between liberal and conservative Christians. What I am shocked about is how many Christians don't post on this thread. It's probably just the silent majority. I do notice other Christians on the Prayers/Vibes/Thoughts thread. I will say that this thread for being a tinder box has gone unlit, which is a credit to the posters.

Re: The Bible: Real, Fiction, or somewhere in between?

Honest question...what defines a troll in your book?

Trolling is posting to deliver a message that isn't indicated by the face value of the post. So for example if I ask you what reaction you're getting from your racist Mott the Hoople t-shirt, I'm burying my real intention -- to state that Mott the Hoople is a racist -- inside a carrier message which serves only as a conveyance and a distraction.

I didn't say you were a troll, though, because to me a troll is someone who only, or at least mostly, does that. For example, Fish posts political screeds copy-pasted from echo chamber sites with a pre-pended text like "an expert comment..." or "what will the reaction be to..." On political topics, it's all he does, so he's a troll. It's possible to engage in trolling from time to time as a hobby, as it were, and not be a professional. I strongly suspect Scooby is an amateur, if gifted, troll. Flag is the real thing -- when the going gets weird, the weird turn pro. I dabble. Bob, Rover, and Pio, as near as I can tell, are 100% straight.

It's also important to separate the thing that is being responded to negatively -- an aggressive political agenda -- from other attributes which are incidental, like religion. When an elephant steps on your toe, it's not which foot he uses that you object to, it's the weight. The different faiths are a fungible; it's the intention of rolling over people and crushing them that's being opposed.

Or the perception that there is such intent.

Well, flip it around and just substitute "secularism" for "religion" and you'll be able to identify. :)

People should and must use their personal values when thinking and acting politically, so as Run-D.M.C. says, "it's tricky." Mutual respect and diffidence is typically the best approach in situations like this -- or at least that's what a lifetime of watching stuff like Gunsmoke and Have Gun - Will Travel has taught me. :)

97% of all the world's great philosophies boils down to, "don't be a jerk."
