The Battle for the Cappo Cup, pt 1: NMU @ LSSU

Re: The Battle for the Cappo Cup, pt 1: NMU @ LSSU

NMU needs to find the consistent bug. I followed the game and I want to thank the Lakers fans for posting the updates. Every year its Jekyl and Hyde part ??? for NMU. I'm not sure what to think.

LETS GO CATS!!!!

Re: The Battle for the Cappo Cup, pt 1: NMU @ LSSU

Because when you get to the Joe 6 out of 7 years, or whatever it is, fan bases get larger expectations. The NCAA goal for NMU is more realistic next season, in my opinion.
Oh my, the number of times I've heard THAT one over the years :p ;)

NMU has gotten to the Joe a lot and I agree with the expectations. I've had them for this team, too. Part of the problem is when they make it to the Joe it hasn't always been in a position of strength. It's almost always "win out or go home," not "we can make it to the finals, lose, and still make the tourney" or "we can lose in the semis, win the third place game, and make the tourney."

This year with three preseason All-CCHA First Team selections, of course expectations were going to be high again. There's still a lot of hockey to be played and if NMU can get one of their second half runs going, the big dance still isn't out of the question.

Wow, you can feel the love in here today ;)

Let's face it, NMU got beat last night and needs to put up some scoring tonight, waiting for the last minute in the game isn't going to cut it - no matter who's in net. I say go with Reid tonight, coach.

Wish I could go up there but I'm stuck at work in Petoskey until 6 p.m. - make some noise 'Cats fans - you know what the Soo needs? A little more COWBELL!!

Is there a reason why Reid isn't playing more?

Ellingson: 9gp, 2-2-1 record, 1.85 GAA, .935 SV%
Stewart: 13gp, 4-5-3 record, 3.20 GAA (), .903 SV%

I know Stewart is the senior, but it seems pretty clear that either the team is playing better with Reid in net, Ellingson is doing a bang up job holding them in the game, or a little of both. It's one thing to rotate two goalies if they're playing pretty evenly, but 1.85 GAA vs. 3.20 GAA isn't close.

Reminds me of the Billy Sauer/Bryan Hogan battle at Michigan the other year. For whatever reason the team just couldn't score/play well with Sauer in net. They scored like 10 goals in 8 games with Sauer in net vs. 40 goals when Hogan was in net in the same amount of games. Red had no choice but to pull the trigger on going with Hogan as his #1.

I know you hate to do it to a senior goalie, but if there's something like that going on with the Cats, it might be time for Ellingson to see a bit more of the starts.

Im sorry, NAIA doesnt count. But by all means, inflate those numbers so your enrollment may top 2,500. Im sure LSCC loses numerous students a year because they realize the Soo sucks. I mean, you could go stare at the locks all day.

Also, it seems your "fans" really love LSCC Hockey

My bad, but they still teach math at a "community college" and the way i learned it 3>1

Re: The Battle for the Cappo Cup, pt 1: NMU @ LSSU

Well, last night effectively ended any chances NMU had of getting an at-large bid. Another season down the drain thanks to Walt and his incompetent brother. I guess all I have now is basketball season to look forward too.

Thanks a lot Walt. Thanks for turning NMU into a school that is a third-rate hockey school. Thanks for killing NMU's fanbase. Thanks for leading this team to yet another mediocre overall season.

Anyone who still supports Walt has their head buried in the sand. It is time to pull your heads out and wake up to the disaster that Walt and Co. have created at NMU.

Boot Walt, Boot Junior, Boot Ken, Boot Ken's assistants, Boot EVERYONE (except Facca) who is associated with the debacle. Have Facca take over as head coach next year with an AD who will allow the team to have the financial support it needs!!!

The only problem here is the State of Michigan Financial ability/distribution which has been shrinking each of the Universities programs the last 7-8 years and to add to the problem shrinking University budgets that overall affect University Sports. The BIGGER Schools have a little more BOOSTER PLEDGES that offset the cost and help their respective programs. Go to UM, MSU, or UNO luncheons/dinners before the game and compare the size, its pretty significant. Coach Kemp (UNO Coach most of their D1 program, except this yr) took me on a tour in 07, room after room after room at their new venue, The Quest Sports Complex. I honestly was blown away. Are we trying to compare to the other Universities here?????

Right now, I don't know what to think. NMU Hockey needs to find that consistent bug/lines to play each night. I get the feeling that missing a few players to injuries/undisclosed injuries is affecting this team each year. I'M NOT READY TO THROWN IN THE TOWEL!!!!

I also feel its counter-productive to rant/rave for a Coaches/Athletic Directors head each time/year in the month of DECEMBER. The NMU Wildcat Hockey team just needs to find that groove to play NMU Hockey.

Tonight, should be a different story--maybe last night was an off night for NMU. 1 person in this forum doesn't speak for the whole public or myself. Spewing from the mouth and speaking for a large group should be saved at the end of the year for program evaluations/reviews by university officials, not fans.

LETS GO CATS!!!!

Re: The Battle for the Cappo Cup, pt 1: NMU @ LSSU

The Lakers came out flying tonight and it looked like a repeat of last night for much of the first 2 periods. NMU did a very admirable job of keeping after it while the Lakers may have been content with sitting on a lead. NMU dominated much of the play in the middle of third although they did give up breakaways to Haines, Nehring, and Barczuk with Dan and Kyle beating the goalie but hitting the post while Stewart made a nice save on Nehring. LSSU sealed it with a couple EN goals late in the third. I was kind of surprised Walt pulled Ellingson so quick but maybe he saw the game being put away early if he didn't make the move.....I realize NMU probably didn't play their best this weekend but in spite of the preseason rankings and expectations it would be foolish in my opinion for anyone to argue that NMU is the better hockey team at this point in the season. Hopefully this will also put to bed the potshots and talk of a "community college" for awhile, all Laker fans need to say is SCOREBOARD:D

GO LAKERS!!

I wonder the same thing sometimes. I should preface this by stating that I could only be described as a casual observer of NMU hockey, but I remember reading something about next year's recruits and Coach Kyle being quoted saying something to the effect of "You can't teach size" when it comes to goalies. Perhaps this along with Stewart being a senior is his logic. From what I remember, he is quick on the trigger on pulling goalies but I was surprised that he pulled Ellingson after two powerplay goals allowed, tonight. Didn't see the goals, perhaps they were weak. From what I have seen from Ellingson in junior and at NMU, I've liked him and would prefer him to Stewart; I guess that's why I'm just a Schemp on a message board and he's the coach. :)

I kind of wonder about Kyle sometimes, too. I saw the Saturday game vs. Omaha, and it looked like he blew his stack in the first intermission; came out without his tie and looked rather disheveled, but it worked as they won the game. I would be interested to hear who you think should replace him and how he would get better results than Walt.

Funny how you were not around for the past month when the team was actually winning...

Re: The Battle for the Cappo Cup, pt 1: NMU @ LSSU

Nice comeback in the 3rd, but way too many odd man and breakaway chances tonight. The weekend came down to special teams and NMU just didn't match up.

Nice to see Follmer back on D, Fernandez sitting, and Maltese and Nugent getting a chance. NMU needed an early goal to get some jump and momentum and Maltese almost got a tip which would have been huge.

Lakers did a very good job this weekend and I am happy for their players and fans. Keep it up.

3 10-minute misconducts this series. I have never seen that many in a series before.

Re: The Battle for the Cappo Cup, pt 1: NMU @ LSSU

Thanks nmu_27 and best wishes for the Wildcats except for a certain weekend in late Febuary.

My wife and i were saying the same thing after that last 10 minute penalty as well. It must be something the crooks in stripes just learned or something.

Re: The Battle for the Cappo Cup, pt 1: NMU @ LSSU

NMU played one period this entire weekend. I saw this as a weekend with a good possibility of getting a sweep. LSCC really outplayed us. I hope the team bounces back and kicks in Tech's skull next week and starts on it's typical 2nd half tear. I still see this team making the tournament, if you look at our 2nd half schedule, I see it as very very possible we win two or three games to everyone we lose.

I also hope LSCC is actually decent this year. Your guys' fan base is really sad though, me and around 5 NMU fans were easily out cheering the entire stadium at points in the game in which we were easily getting dominated.

Why does everyone hate LSCC's stadium also, it was a lot nicer than Tech's in my opinion?

Re: The Battle for the Cappo Cup, pt 1: NMU @ LSSU

Thanks......... i think. I really did not hear to much from Nmu fans saturday night, friday night was a quite a bit louder as far as your teams fans.
It seemed like every time we got a little loud your contingent of 98 pound girl students or 98 year old men would give us the evil eye.Other then that really i just enjoyed the games it's been a while since us techies could enjoy such a well played consistant weekend from our beloved Lakers.
Hats off to you Northern fans for real,Northern does have some great vocal fans.

Re: The Battle for the Cappo Cup, pt 1: NMU @ LSSU

Hey boot, where is the athletic director going to come up with the additional funding you desire? Which other programs shall the University drop or cut funding from. Please explain how this can be achieved.

What were you cheering for? The Zamboni driver?

Certainly your Cats gave you little reason ;)

Re: The Battle for the Cappo Cup, pt 1: NMU @ LSSU

If LSSU is a "community college", then I am all for community colleges.

I have a degree from both LSSU and Northern, and I can tell you the educational experience at LSSU was head and shoulders above what Northern had to offer.

Re: The Battle for the Cappo Cup, pt 1: NMU @ LSSU

Good luck to the Lakers the rest of the season. Your team was very impressive all weekend long. Questions need answering in Marquette after this weekend! Don't know where to begin.

Thanks Mojo, despite the bickering and arguing that goes on when LSSU plays NMU, i admit i do root for NMU when they play just about everyone else (unless of course Lake State is in a direct position to gain from an NMU loss lol) so good luck to the 'Cats the rest of the way!
