The 59th Annual Beanpot Tournament

Re: The 59th Annual Beanpot Tournament

oooo arguments about chants, NOW we have a Beanpot thread... please continue!

Regarding chants from Monday, I did appreciate BU's "Sunday school" response to BC's safety school chant.

While we're mocking chants, two BU cheers this year have struck me as terribly dumb: 'Sunday school' and 'not from Boston' (in response to BC's band playing 'Shipping up to Boston').

With regards to 'Sunday school' I'd like to point out that as BU is claiming 1839 as it's founding date (on it's seal and the big granite welcome sign on Comm Ave) and not 1869 (when it was chartered as BU). Sadly in 1839 it was founded as "The Newbury Biblical Institute", in Newbury, VT. In 1847 it was renamed "Methodist General Biblical Institute" and then later moved to Boston in 1867 and renamed itself (again!) as "Boston Theological Institute" - finally in 1869 it was given a state charter as "Boston University." I may not know much about religion, but with names involving such words as "Biblical"/"Theological"/"Methodist" it sounds like BU was more of a 'Sunday school' than BC ever was.

Once the history of BU is spelled out their "not from Boston" cheer becomes a joke in itself. BC was founded in South Boston, and while the current academic quad is located in Newton, all athletic buildings and a significant number of dorms are located in Brighton. So when BU fans are sitting in Conte (which is located 20 feet inside the Boston city line) and cheering that we're not 'from Boston', they only make themselves look foolish and unaware of their own school's history.

Re: The 59th Annual Beanpot Tournament

Oh, I don't mean to imply any negativity toward students, but you're talking about 7,000 people in a 45,000-seat stadium.

I know we're here to talk hockey, but I'm going to call a spade a spade and state that our attendence is pretty impressive from a statistical perspective. Yes, BC does have issues packing in 45K, but when you think about what the 'big name' schools do, I find it more impressive. Doing some quick math, BC has 9K undergrads and a 45K stadium. That means that if the entire student body showed up, they'd fill 20% of the stadium. However looking at other 'big time' football programs the numbers work out as Alabama [25K / 101K / 25%], Penn State[38K / 107K / 35%], Florida [33K / 88K / 37%], etc. So BC has to fill a much larger percentage from alums and locals than do the big state schools. If you look at it that way, and factor in the major hassle with parking/tailgating, I'm not surprised that BC doesn't always sell out.

Well they wouldn't have to if BC would stick to the game that's being played and not some U.S. News and Forbes rankings that they think will get them Harvard and Columbia-like advantages.

"Safety school" is a chant for high school basketball games.

I loved sitting as a neutral observer and just listening to the chants BU and BC came up with.

Not only that, but look at where a lot of these huge stadiums are... Alabama... what competes with Alabama for the sports entertainment dollar? While I've never been to Alabama, I'd guess there isn't much else there to go to, if you want to take in a live sporting event. In Boston there are a multitude of college and pro teams. The point being, that some of these big schools draw big numbers from local fans, who have nothing to do with the university, other than location. And the parking / tailgating issue is a big problem too... serioulsy, I would definatley take in a BC home game every year if I could drive and set up a tailgate etc... unforunatley, with the location I dont think much can be done about that.

How is that a chant for high school? Most kids don't get to choose where they go to high school. They choose where they go to college. Hence the "Safety" school. I've never heard that chanted at a HS basketball game.

When I was in high school our fans would chant it at the school on the southern side of town because they were well-known to be academically inferior and go to what would be considered low-tier colleges. The chant would be aimed at where they were going in the future.

The chant works, it's not an issue of it making sense. It's just tiresome, cliche and not creative at all.

Especially at BC, why waste time with that when you can knock BU for owning them all season.

Just want to get a general consensus... the Chestnut Hill CC mascot is the piegon, correct?

I'm not a student anymore, so I don't really participate in these chants one way or another. That being said, I think the answer to your questions is "because it ****es BU fans off."

Can't deny that. Even when it was being chanted I couldn't help but think "you mad" doing my best Cam'Ron impression.

The other side of the coin is that one would expect a large chunk of BC's alumni to be in the Boston area, and because it's a major metropolitan area (and BC is really the only I-A school covering it), there's a large population to draw on.

My basis for comparison is Notre Dame. Admittedly, that's not quite fair to BC, because ND was one of the premier programs in the country from the 20's to the late 80's/early 90's (and has had its moments since then), building up a huge amount of mindshare outside of its alumni base. ND sits in a metropolitan area that, all told, only accounts for about 500,000 people (with Chicago about 2 hrs distant), many of whom have a contrary allegiance to Purdue, Michigan State, or Michigan, so we rely heavily on current students (rough estimate is that ~10,000 attend in total; ND's enrollment is only ~12,000 inclusive of grad/law/MBA, but SMC and probably Holy Cross students are also included in that 10k number), faculty, alumni, and subway alums to fill the 80k stadium every game.

Actually, in regards to the geographical distribution of BC alums, this is not the case at all. Since BC students come from all over the country, they tend to scatter after graduation. At Alabama or UGA or Florida, the students come overwhelmingly from that state. Therefore, the likelihood that they stay is much higher. Notre Dame relies much more heavily on the subway alums than BC is able to, due to their history and the lack of other sports entertainment options in the immediate area, and this is well-documented.

That is terrible logic.

Re: The 59th Annual Beanpot Tournament

I know it is believe me. I didn't partake in it. I don't think it's a clever enough chant at any level, especially when the team you're up against is pounding you (the case for our high school team).

I'd just look over and be like "you guys are dumb."

NU's "Facebook sucks" chant the other night was tremendous.
