Re: The 4th Global War on Terror - Deja vu all over again!

They don't make movies like that any more. My favorite was the "Attack of the Crab Monsters"
I loved that! It was on the 4:30 movie in NY about once a month. Scared the hell out of me as a kid.

Also great, "The Crawling Eye."

The Crawling Eye? With Forrest Tucker? Petrified me early in the movie as a kid-ending kind of anti climactic and far less scary than the build up-but that was so typical of the 1950's horror movies. Every so often TCM runs a few of these in succession for a few hours-takes me back to thos days very quickly. Still have my 3D glasses from going to the movies to see House of Wax and then Creature From The Black Lagoon.:)

I remember Janet Munro. She was a cutie.

(Reason #738 why the 50's were better than today. See, kids, that there is what is called a "woman." Not the anorexic plastic insects of today.)

My favorite was Yvette Vickers-an extra in the original "Attack of the 50 Foot Woman". She played Harry's girlfriend who you first saw in the bar. But i would settle for any of the babes in those 50's movies-Joan Weldon in "THEM!", Margaret Sheridan in "The Thing From Another World", Joan taylor in "Earth Vs The Flying Saucers". But for me they all paled when I saw Martine Beswick in "One Million Years BC" or "Thunderball" and "From Russia With Love". She was my 'B' Movie queen.:D

Not only have I never seen "The Crawling Eye," I've never heard of it. I blame my parents.

Re: The 4th Global War on Terror - Deja vu all over again!

I do understand that a person has to be quite extreme to be dropped by Fox News....yet there is that old adage that even a broken clock is right twice a day.....

Someone told me that Glenn Beck is reporting the "true story" about the Libyan ambassador's death. In this fever dream, the US had "lent" some weapons to Al Qaida of the Maghreb or whatever their name is, for use against the Qaddafy regime, and that the CIA had reached a secret deal with them to buy the weapons back. So the Ambassador and the two SEALs with him were on a hush-hush mission and then were double-crossed. Sounds a bit far-fetched, though that does provide one possible explanation of why the security was so lax....

Yea, give any measure of credibility to someone who is on par with this.

You may have heard of it as "The Trollenberg Terror." I think that's what it was called in the theaters, while TCE was what it was called in Drive-Ins.

I agree with the Doctor -- the build-up is better than the pay off. That's true of a lot of the Brit B&W scary movies.

For the young-ins, here are the ladies mentioned in the posts below:

Yvette Vickers:

Joan Weldon

Margaret Sheridan (looks much mousier and IMHO cuter in "The Thing," but I couldn't find a good photo)

Joan Taylor (yes, I would say the Doctor has a type...)

Martine Beswick

And my personal favorite,

Venetia Stevenson

Sheridan in particular in addition to her beauty was also a legitimately good actress.

This has been another episode of, When Women Were Women. (No silicone was expended during the making of this picture.)

Kepler-I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart (along with some other places) for this nostalic walk down mammary lane. These ladies and a host of others were the reason I just could not wait for puberty.

Edit-I can think of a host of others-but this does quite well for starters.

Well, if you believe Toynbee, what happens is:

1. Heroic epic of barbarian energy coalescing towards civilization. (800-1100)
2. Golden age of civilization with broad social legitimacy. (1100-1500)
3. Troubled time where social order begins to break down. (1500-1800)
4. Nostalgic period with facade of Second Religiousness while institutions seize up. (1800-Present-?)
5. Collapse. Barbarians enter the vacuum. (?)

We've got about a hundred years left. Party at my place.

This reminds me of the Kardashev scale and the theory that "empires" are getting shorter and shorter as we transition from a type 0 civilization to a type 1 civilization. I think most "projections" put earth as transitioning from 0 to I between 2100 and 2200.

It's an interesting theory.

Not sure if she qualifies, but my classic beauty from "long" ago has always been Natalie Wood.

Possibly I'm more sensitive to this stuff than I used to be because my cousin was deployed to Afghanistan recently after reaching what must be the highest level of training in the Army (the kind where you have to learn Urdu and get through SERE training before you are deployed)... what the heck are we still doing over there if nobody wants us? Could we not speed up the timeline?
