The 4th Global War on Terror - Deja vu all over again!

Re: The 4th Global War on Terror - Deja vu all over again!

Many of the people in these countries have lived pretty cruddy lives filled with war, poverty and other things that will just flat out make you mad. We have seen what people can do when tragedy strikes. (look at America pre and post 9/11) They have leaders who use them as cattle and there is violence all around. All it takes is someone fanning the flames and entire generations of terrorists are born!

What makes this worse though is the added aspect of belief. It is bad enough to be filled with hatred and anger, but when you have a sense of righteousness it is the final straw. (this is true of any religion, not just Islam) It is easy to convince yourself mass murder is ok when you know in your heart of hearts that God thinks what you are doing is great!

I think Salmon Rushdie said it best the other day on Bill Maher...there has been a fundamental shift in Islam and the violence and hatred, which used to be the extreme edge of the religion is now more mainstream than ever. what is worse is that even the people who distance themselves or dont support this fundamentalism also do nothing to try and stop it. It wasnt all that long ago that the Mid East was a pretty open place. There has been a serious shift.

This is all very well said.

That was an interesting appearance by Rushdie on Maher. There was a fair amount of distance between the "9/11" liberal position of Rushdie and Maher and the "traditional liberal" position of Tweety.

Nah - Canada or Mexico. Shorter supply lines. :D

Hey, I'm all for bringing back "conquering". Not Iraq style, where we gave back that cool billion dollars in cash we found then rebuilt the country. I'm talking more of the old school kind of looting and then taking off. First I'd start with something easy, but fun, like maybe Bermuda.

Re: The 4th Global War on Terror - Deja vu all over again!

So who would you like us to go to war with Bob? Syria, Iran or should we re-invade Iraq?
You do realize there are things between catering to Islam and declaring war on them? I guess not.

Re: The 4th Global War on Terror - Deja vu all over again!

Didn't Neville Chamberlain with the Munich Agreement and appeasement policy show us that you only placate so much?
Yes, but it appears we are doomed as we fail to learn from history. And that cuts both ways with invading Iraq and Afghanistan as well as Obama's appeasement.

Its not Iran. Its not North Korea. Its not Russia. Go after that new...err..the only real enemy we've ever had: Islam! It'll give us a reason to exist...I guess.

You guys will never learn that there's a common thread in the enemies we have faced since the end of the cold war...and there's a common thread in us bumbling into conflict year after year with someone else.

You don't know much about Iran, do you?

Declaring war on a country is one thing. It is extremely difficult to declare war on an ideology (terrorism) as it crosses international boundaries. #43 may have had the right idea (no place to hide), but lacked the wherewithal to carry it through. It would have been ugly, it may have been costly (lives and $$), but it probably would have been effective.

So if you talk a big game, you better have the you know what to back it up.

This is all a placeholder until China, which will be a perfect storm: (1) Commies! (sort of), (2) Not White! (for the racist herpa-derps), (3) Not Christian! (for the Jesus herpa-derps), and (4) THEY TOOK OUR JERBS!!!!

Actually from all reports I've seen, there's more Christians in China, by a long ways, than any other country in the world. FYI.

Bob, you're imagining that Republican Jesus is the GOP nominee. In fact your party's nominee (don't even try to tell me you're not voting GOP) is Mittens Romney, who wants as his Secretary of State John Bolton. I could also see McCain getting a cabinet post (Sec of Defense). That means war with Syria or Iran if those two govts remain in power. These three people have all publicly stated they want us still in Iraq for chrissakes.

But wait you say. I won't vote Mittens but am looking forward to 2016. Swell Bob, but who exactly is Republican Jesus next time around. Paul Ryan? Rick Perry? Michelle Bachmann? Do tell...

That's really stretching, Bob. The high end of estimates (100M) is equivalent to the percentage (9%) of atheists in the US.

Let me repeat that: China is as "Christian" a nation as the US is an "atheist" nation.

You missed the new rule? Stats and percentages are out because it doesn't feed the conservative narrative.

You can win a war against Hitler. Our goal here should not be to win a war against terrorism. It should be to end terrorism. Huge difference.

You do this by isolating extremists by improving your standing among people everywhere (foriegn policy marketing program) and then snuffing out the remaining extremist cells. Not by talking hate to all who believe in Islam (when only a tiny fraction are terrorists). Its part of the administrations strategy when they made it clear they thought the film was bad stuff...which it was.

I've heard numbers higher than that for China, significantly higher, from people who are involved on the ground there. Of course with the persecution that takes place there, solid numbers are hard to come by. But even your number of 100 million is more than I think you'd find in the U.S. who seriously consider themselves Christian (not those people who think they're Christian because they are born in America or such).

You're imagination is always active, but sometimes you ratchet it up even further.
