The 4th Global War on Terror - Deja vu all over again!

Re: The 4th Global War on Terror - Deja vu all over again!

Thank you for the clarification Opie. By I believe Ford's executive order which is still standing the US can't kill a head of state. I don't think Bush revoked that part of it.
So if we do what you have suggested, bomb Assads military into submission, do you think Assad will remain alive?

We differentiate as between "assassinations" and "targeted killings," although the principal might not. When bin Laden took one in the face, it wasn't an "assassination," it was a "targeted killing." See how easy that is?

Presidential Executive Orders aren't law. Besides, "W" revoked them.

Well, they're not statutes. But they are as much law as any administrative code or regulation. The legislature can always overrule them, but they are a part of the law.

Never pass up a chance to impress us, eh Clarence? Is this going to be on the final?

Time to issue a BOLO for Hillary. And to apply the F.B.I. standard for kidnap victims--demand proof of life.

Re: The 4th Global War on Terror - Deja vu all over again!

Here is one potential guideline to US foreign policy. Pretty simple, direct, easy to follow if you are consistent and principled.

and if you do follow it consistenty, your enemies also know what to expect, and plan their activities accordingly as well.

For what it's worth

“First, make no distinction between the terrorists and the nations that harbor them — and hold both to account.
Second, take the fight to the enemy overseas before they can attack us here at home again.
Third, confront threats before they fully materialize.
And fourth, advance liberty and hope as an alternative to the enemy’s ideology of repression and fear.”

Who'd ever have expected nostalgia for that, eh? :(

Re: The 4th Global War on Terror - Deja vu all over again!

Were I a Democrat in Congress, I'd probably vote "no" on a use of force resolution in Syria.

Were I a Republican in Congress, I'd probably vote "no" on a use of force resolution in Syria.

In the first case, I'd have a sense that being associated with any Obama policies in the 2014 election would be poison at the polling place, and I'd want to distance myself from him as much as I could on any high profile vote. Beyond that, my constituents very probably would be against it and I'd also want to listen to them.

In the second case, I just wouldn't trust Obama to implement the strike effectively. There's no point in voting "yes" only to have him once again botch the response. His willingness to let US citizens die at Benghazi without even attempting a rescue would have creeped me out no end [I'm speaking from a Republican perspective here, not my own. I have little use for either party at this point. yuck to both].

Pope Francis had perhaps the best response: flood Syria with humanitarian aid workers who provide assistance to all the people, no matter who they are, and have the world unite in one voice to condemn the poison gas in the strongest possible terms.

And were you actually an independent, we might give a shiat about your long winded ramblings. Because you once wore an onion on your belt, as was the style at the time.

How's that working in Saudi Arabia?

Don't know. Two precedents. Saddam survived initial US war. Milosevic was overthrown and ended up being turned over to War Crimes Tribunal.

This reminds me of an article I read which inspired me to write a dreaded "letter to the editor". Some idiot columnist writing about Bosnia stated that the actual count of people being killed by the Serbs wasn't as high as originally thought. Maybe like instead of 300K being killed it was closer to 100K or something to that effect. The guy's point was the US should have stayed out of the conflict until more deaths occured. One of the stupidest things I'd ever seen, which I wrote in and the paper was nice enough to print, saying that either you're going to condemn the actions or you're not, and waiting for a few hundred thousand more people to get offed before you intervene is cold comfort for the people who's lives would have been saved.

So, Syria. 1400 people gassed. Take no action and Assad has no reason not to do that again. What will it take? 14,000 gassed next time? 140,000? What's the magic number people?

You have an unusual dictionary, it seems. How do you define a person who is not affiliated with either major party and who generally criticizes both of them?

It seems that anyone who isn't a reflexive brown-noser like you annoys you merely because they aren't afraid to observe that the Emperor indeed has no clothes.

I guess I'm just not smart enough to be awestruck by how wonderful their intentions are. Silly me, to observe actions as a measure of what a person stands for.

But you are a reflexive brown-noser. Hence unofan's correct point about you.

I still have this tiny notion in my mind that fishy is just a character being played by the poster formerly known as Kepler. He started posting here shortly before Kepler went AWOL. Their styles are remarkably similar and differ only in their positions on the political spectrum.

I'll put it this way. It would shock me about as much as finding out the NBA is actually fixed.

It's funny because the exact same thought occurred to me earlier today. Then I realized that if it was Kepler, he wouldn't be able to resist his knee jerk foaming hatred that boiled up anytime something was mentioned about the American South. :p
I wasn't going to say anything before because I still feel bad about outing Rover as Tim, that was a pretty funny persona but he doesn't post under that name much if at all since I outed him.

Just an observation, but you know what I never hear people say about foreign policy or anything else, really? "I sure wish Mitt Romney had been elected." No, you just don't hear that. Maybe a wish for Hillary, even McCain. Never Mitt. poor guy.

Which Tim am I supposed to be again? I thought there was a BC poster named Tim but I'm not sure if that's who you're referring to.

You must have missed the article that ran yesterday about how Romney's advisors are claiming everything he said on the campaign trail is true!

Re: The 4th Global War on Terror - Deja vu all over again!

A headline I never thought I would ever see at least while Obama was President:

"Pleading for War: National Address Tuesday"
