WABI is reporting that Willie starts on Friday, not a shocker

Nice letter to the editor in today's paper from a fan about Darling. Larry's article from today follows the letter.

Athlete’s graciousness

Due to the good will and sense of community from Coach Bob Corkum and a number of players from the University of Maine Men’s Hockey Team recently, my 6-year-old son, Cole, had the opportunity to skate with Ryan Hegarty, Mike Cornell, Joey Diamond, Josh Seeley and Matt Mangene. They were gracious, patient, and represented the University very well. However, the highlight for Cole and me was meeting goalie Scott Darling.

My son idolizes Scott, and when I had the chance to tell Scott that, he couldn’t have been nicer or more accommodating. In fact, without being prompted by me or anyone, he retrieved his game-stick, autographed it with a personal message, and gave it to my son. This impromptu and thoughtful gesture not only made a gigantic impression on a little boy which will never fade, but also caused me, as both a parent and member of the Maine Legislature, to look at the University’s sports program and its athletes in an entirely different light.

That simple but significant gesture by a young man, barely out of boyhood himself, caused a little boy and his father to look at all athletes a little differently. I know from reading the BDN that Scott’s experiencing some challenges right now, but I hope Coach Whitehead and others at the University might see this letter, and at least consider the impact, that the class, demeanor and kindness of one student-athlete had on one little boy and his family.

One of the most pathetic articles Larry has turned out. What in hell where the players suppose to say?

I'd be curious to know what the fan reaction is, overall; many posters have been reasonable, but what about the rest of the Maine followers? Must be a tough pill to swallow, having your top goalie benched against a very capable playoff opponent.

There are plenty that are tired of his antics. I don't believe his "problems" will go away sitting out a few games. The harder pill to swallow his having him come back and pulling his crap another season.

Nyquist article in today's PPH.

Thanks for the link. Nyquist is one of those rare finds. There is nothing to dislike. Hopefully, he will be around for another year.

From the PPH article:

"He's legitimately one of the top players in the country," Whitehead said. "He reminds me of guys like Michel Leveille, Teddy Purcell, Greg Moore and Martin Kariya. Guys that are complete."

Whitehead sure had a man crush on Purcell. He doesn't deserve to be put with Levs, Moore and Kariya.

I think Dave Hendrickson sums it up pretty well with his picks. :(

Lowell at Maine
Past history may say that Lowell can't beat Maine in the playoffs. But past history screams even more loudly that you can't win without top-notch goaltending. Even more so when you've staggered into the playoffs. Whitehead and the Maine players will say all the right things, expressing confidence in either Wilson or Sirman in goal, but it smacks of whistling past the graveyard to me. I give Vermont and Merrimack a better chance of advancing than Maine

What did Dave predict the weekend unh came to Orono?

Re: The 3rd official 09-10 Maine season thread: Bubble-icious

Today's PPH article. Looks like Sat & Sun games are on TV. In So Me anyway.

You mean Northern Massachusetts?

That is a great idea. Northern Maine can shrivel and die and the rest of Maine can enjoy our education and money. Quebec may annex northern Maine eventually...if you ask nicely.

Re: The 3rd official 09-10 Maine season thread: Bubble-icious

The game must be on in the Bangor area if it will be shown in the southland.

Who's the most important player on the ice? Maine has guys who haven't proven a thing in goal so its pretty easy to pick Lowell. You'd have to be a fan to pick otherwise and Dave ain't no of fan of Maine.
