No question Portland could do it. What is it like an hour north of Manchester?

Boston is a huge base of college hockey fans. The drive to Portland is really no different than the one they make to Worcester or Manchester. Much more willing than the non-existant base in NYC that doesn't drive to Albany. Worse yet Rochester.

Assuming Maine gets back to the NCAAs and gets to stay home, then you have some other Eastern team as either the top seed to the 2-3, depending what Maine is that year, you've got no issues. None.

Agreed. And I would think with the economic state the City of Portland is in they would make a huge push for a regional. I'm not sure what the figure was for the all star game but it was in the millions for revenue.
Portlansd also has a h ell of alot more to offer than both Worcester and Albany. Way more "attractions" so to speak.

It was so fun watching UNH pound Cornell....:

Bite yur tongue!!! It is NEVER, EVER, EVER fun watching UHN win even if they are beating BU!!!! :D Cornell was pretty pitiful, though....big guys but no match for anybody.

There are over 500 rooms just at the Bangor mall. 3 or 4 brand new hotels in the last year built in Bangor.

Plus the Racino. Both that and the new Garden Inn have to be 3 star right?

The attendance in Worcester looks **** poor. Too bad there are no Eastern teams there.

Re: The 3rd official 09-10 Maine season thread: Bubble-icious

The crowd size in Albany was awful. Frankly, I agree with Sandiego. You have Cornell, RIT, and UNH in Albany, and you have attendance issues?? I know we are talking about the early Friday games, but still. It is not like you have Bemidji, UAH, Alaska, and Denver as your schools here. There should be a fan base that is willing and able to travel to Albany for the schools that are playing there.

I am not sure when, why, or how, but it does seem like something has been lost in recent years and it does seem a little less "sexy".

Going from 12 to 16 teams, and adding two sites has diluted the fan pool. Before you had six teams, and all their fans, at one site, and the fans got to see four games. Now, you're paying even more, to see one fewer game, and you've only got four teams' fanbases there to fill up the place, and a lot of them aren't necessarily gonna stick around once their team gets eliminated.

Worcester crowd may look weak, but it looks better than Albany's. Smaller building, though? That might be the reason.

I disagree. Plus it wouldn't be just Mainers. I bet the CCC would be completely sold out. Look at the AHL all star game. It's not like there's so much to do in Portland that would take away from an event like that.

And the Old Port would be awesome. 6000 college hockey fans hanging in the Old Port? It would be like Providence, when Cianci let everyone drink in the streets.

RIT is heading to the frozen four.

I can't believe that. After watching how much jump UNH had against Cornell I figured they'd blow RIT off the ice. I guess Cornell sucked more than I thought and RIT was better than I thought. Just makes me mad though as Maine could compete with these guys but didn't do what it takes to get in:mad:

Re: The 3rd official 09-10 Maine season thread: Bubble-icious

Attendance in Albany was announced at 4000. St. Paul was 7200. That is being generous, I think.

A regional held in Bangor or Portland would draw just as lousy a crowd as Albany, but you keep deluding yourself that a regional in Maine is the NCAA's panacea. There aren't 6000 Mainers who are going to drop $90 a person for two days of college hockey.

Next year the East Regional is in Bridgeport, CT. Don't know if that will draw any better than Albany. I was at the regional in 2006 (I think), when Maine defeated Michigan State, attendance wasn't very good for that one either.

Albany came in at an impressive 3737 today.
Attendance for Maine-MSU in '06 was 4470.

Was in Worcester today and it was a decent crowd for the BC game. If you ask me the problem is simply economical, as I have been to many of these over the years that were close to sold out. $47.50 per ticket of $85 for the weekend! We used to go as a family of 4, no way I could spend $200 a day or $400 a weekend! NC$$ needs to realize that a $30 ticket would suit them much better!

As a means of comparison the Sharks signs for their AHL franchise advertised a $5 ticket for kids. Tough for a general hockey fan to bring the family if he can go a few days later and save big bucks!

Having said that no doubt it would e great to have a regional in Portland, or back in Providence for that matter!

Your numbers show how loyal Maine fans are in supporting their team. You would think that with 2 New York teams playing, attendance would be better.
