Lynah, you're being infected by the stupid virus that affects a lot of people with your ideology. I'd recommend vitamins and bed rest. I told you those people are contagious! ;)

Getting on a President or his family's case  for taking vacations shows how empty the intellectual tank really is on the right. Now we're whining about secret service protection, or how a President should pay for it out of pocket?!? Quite possibly the stupidest thing written on these boards and that's saying something!

BTW - As Bush II is the costliest ex-Prez, any call for him to pony up some dough to pay for his upkeep? Anybody? Bueller? Anybody?
I have no ideology - I think it's every bit as stupid as you do that people would bring this up, and I would say exactly the same thing about Bush or any president. Don't read into my posts - your blood pressure will thank you.

It seems to me that the current "debate" about gay "marriage" is a bit narrowly focused, and does not address at all the substantively important "big picture" questions.

What is the "purpose" of "marriage" in the first place?

Is it primarily about the "fulfillment" of the participants?

Is it primarily an inter-generational social institution, one of the primary crucibles in which tomorrow's adults are forged?

I don't think I've met anyone who is "against" gay marriage so much as I've met people who are "for" two-parent families, one of each gender.

That's why personally I've always prefered "civil unions" for everyone, be they heterosexual or homosexual, without the concept of "marriage" attached; reserving "marriage" for a sacramental function instead. Then gays could live together with civic recognition of their "special monogomous bond" and there would be no "discrimination" since heterosexual couples also would get the same civic recognition of their own special monogomous bond.

It is really sad that we've all become so self-centered; the debate is framed solely about the personal fulfillment of the individuals involved, with no thought given whatsoever to the wider consequences for children or for society. Do we really want the raising of children to be separated from "marriage" entirely? "Oh these kids are such a bother, let's just drop them off at the public dormitory and let the state raise them while we go out to dinner and a show."

Really? You're pulling out the "think of the children" card? So tell me, why is it ok for two octogenarians to get married but not two gay men? Why is it ok for my wife and I to get married without any intent to have kids, but not two lesbians who have kids?

More importantly, why should we cede "marriage" to the churches/mosques/synagogues? Can atheists not get married then?

The term matters. Virtually every argument made against gay marriage was made against interracial marriage 50 years ago.

What is wrong with all the folks you mention getting a valid "marriage" certificate from the county clerk in the form of a civil union? how can you possibly be against that? They'd all be okay, no? wouldn't all of them be covered by that? are you saying you oppose that? because it sounds like you are in favor of it.

and your reading comprehension lesson for today: I clearly did not say "think of the children" I said "what are the consequences for the future of society if we tamper with a model that has worked pretty well for several thousand years without understanding the long-term consequences first?"

I drew no conclusions one way or the other. I merely said that no one is even addressing that question in the first place, and that seems odd to me.

Though I suppose the "self-centered" part might have hit too close to home for you given your garbled emotional response, eh?

Who's tampering with heterosexual marriage? Oh, that's right - no one.

but not two lesbians who have kids?

How is that even physically possible? Unless you're referring to the unwanted consequence of "bear with wide canyon" or "doe who cannot keep legs together"...

Hey you're about the last normal conservative left out here. Wanted to make sure "they" hadn't gotten to you too!

Remember Michelle Bachmann's "Its costing $200M for Obama to go to the Middle East"? Dutifully reported by the truth tellers in wingnut media...except it turned out to be blatantly false.

Costs that much for a business trip? Understandable. Sending your spoiled brats to the Bahamas on taxpayer's dollar, that's a different story...

The decay continues. :(

Society continues to move forward. :)

For flaggy: gay marriage arguments started today. That's presumably what brought bob out of his hibernation.

For everyone, early indication from scotusblog is kennedy will punt on prop 8. Guess he didn't sound like he would make it national law at this time, which was somewhat expected. But he won't overrule the lower court and endorse prop 8, either. The other 8 justices lined up as expected.

You mean I gotta listen to this argument again? Let me know when it's over...

Reminds me of a SNL skit after the 2008 election with Dan Ackroyd as a dead on impression of The Boner hosting a strategy meeting of his fellow Republicans. They're trying to figure out a way to go after Obama and at the end Ackroyd holds up a picture of Obama's kids, smiles a sinister smile and says something like "here's something we can go after".

What's that they say about art imitating life?

Obummer wants celebrity status? He's got it, and everything that goes with it.

I'm not sure attacks on politicians' pre-teen kids are fair game. It really takes a pathetic weasel to think that they are. Oh well, you guys gotta be yourselves I guess, but you really ought to get in touch with these anger issues of yours...

Obummer wants to put them into the situation? They're fair game.
