The 2018 midterm elections!

Re: The 2018 midterm elections!

Guys, its racial resentment. Ain't any more complicated than that. Most poor whites don't know any Wall St. bankers but they sure do notice if more and more people in the community are speaking Spanish.

Re: The 2018 midterm elections!

It's certainly racial resentment but they tie it into economics as well. You don't have a high paying job because the brown people took it from you, you don't have robust social programs of the FDR era because they're giving it all to the brown ppl, etc.

Basically instead of acknowledging the inherent problems and contradictions of capitalism that are screwing them they just blame brown ppl and at least 33% of the nation believes it. And most of the dems have no real answer either.

Its awfully tough to "cure" racism. Its the same argument I had with Kep when he thought Bernie would walk away with half the GOP base due to his appeal on economic issues. What I politely explained to him was unless Bernie included in that argument that it was non-white people who were the cause of those economic problems, he stood zero chance of appealing to these die hard Goopers. I will also point out a lot of these people (but not all) are older whites who remember a much less diverse population or at least a more segregated one that they long for.

White people have more in common with colored people than they do with rich people

Re: The 2018 midterm elections!

Well he's not trying to convince the 33% obviously (and that's over half of the GOP base I would imagine), that's a lost cause.+

That's true and part of what's been lacking on both sides, a class based analysis.

Re: The 2018 midterm elections!

People also gravitate towards easy answers. A detailed analysis of the macro and micro economic impacts of changing tax rates and trade policy vs. "dem dam brown peoples are a takin our jobs!!!"

Re: The 2018 midterm elections!

Yeah...people dont want Wonks giving them five paragraph essays on why they dont have money. They want someone to blame so they can feel better about it.

Re: The 2018 midterm elections!

Ok but the dems don't really have a salient argument as for who to blame and are basically trying to give 5 paragraph answers to a very simple question. The oligarchs who buy off politicians is clearly the answer but a large percentage of the dems don't want to admit that for obvious reasons.

White people aspire to be rich (generally). White people rarely aspire to be non-white. See the problem?

I agree with you. I also know that the Wonks giving the long answers are usually right and get proven so over time but people dont care. They dont look at the full story they want the RottenTomatoes snippet. The more long term they look at things the more they realize their talking points are BS.

And the thing is this isnt educated/uneducated the things i hear highly educated, well informed people say astounds me sometime. Politics is turning into sports in its fandom.
