The 2016 Beanpot: The Sacred Quest for the Holy Grail of College Hockey in Boston

Re: The 2016 Beanpot: The Sacred Quest for the Holy Grail of College Hockey in Bosto

1970 Beanpot BU comes from behind to defeat BC 5-4. Checking forward Wayne Gowing had the hat-trick including the GWG and BC goalie Jim Barton had 52 saves. MVP: Mike Hyndman a very well known Terrier. Agree completely on the Bryan Miller Beanpot

Did Mike Hyndman's dad play in the NHL?

Felt like 80-4 to tell the truth

Absolutely. The that kid could play. Would take him over Curry any day. Used to get a kick out of the glove saves an inch off the ice that he would bring up over his head to make it look good.

I think you guys are ignoring that Maguire's tournament save percentage was the second-best EVER. It's a two-game competition, not just a championship round.

Anyway, I have no vested interest in any of these teams, so I'll butt out now. But I'm very much of the persuasion that Maguire was the rightful MVP of this tournament. Demko was also excellent (when is he not?), but Maguire's performance was slightly more impressive and he singlehandedly kept his team in the game at times.

His first period performance last night was outstanding. BU didn't get their legs until the second, but that game could've easily been a laugher after the first.

Gowing was a defensive forward whose primary duty was to keep BC's Tim Sheehy in check. He scored all three in the third after BC had taken a 4-2 lead. Hyndman had led the nation in scoring as a sophomore forward (67 points in 32 games), then switched to defense as a senior and made first-team All-American. Recall his ripping a shot through the net at Boston Arena (now Matthews) against BC that year.

A tip of the Husky toque to both teams for putting on yet another epic Beanpot final in a long string of epic Beanpot finals. But I still hate both of you.....

Upon further review, I think I hate Bentley even more!

Re: The 2016 Beanpot: The Sacred Quest for the Holy Grail of College Hockey in Bosto

At the risk of weighing in on a Beanpot thread, I thought that they actually announced it as the MOP of the Tourney, which is a change from years past when it was definitely MVP (and may well have simply been a mistake by the announcer). To me that actually changed my opinion on who should win. While SMag (Seminole Fan here, so I'll use the same nickname) was clearly most valuable, I didn't think he was the most outstanding (though he was excellent in the 1st last night). I'd have given it to Tuch who I thought was very good both nights with the winner last night and a incredibly impressive assist on Sanford's goal night 1. He was a force practically every time he hit the ice and was responsible for 2 of BC's 4 goals including the only goal scored during the final. Now back to my regularly scheduled lurking.

i get sick when i think of that game but certainly our fortunes have changed since then............and USCHO couldn't get the storyline right, it's 6 out of the last 7, not 5 out of the last 6. Geesh

you should know better.... it's BUscho :D

Actually, Maguire's save percentage is third best among Elberly Award winners at 0.970 and appears to be third best all-time for a goalie playing 2 games. However, Demko's save percentage was 0.961, better than most Elberly Award winners, but most people will not be aware of that as the Beanpot program won't list it in future issues.

I usually like Andy Brickley and can tolerate Tom Caron, but they had some tough moments on the broadcast last night.

- The Miles Wood hit on Oksanen that drew a penalty - it was clear as day that Wood hit Oksanen's helmet with his own (I won't speculate that it was intentional, though it certainly looked like it could have been). And yet Brick obviously didn't see that on the replay, because he kept insinuating that it wasn't a good call, and that BC didn't like the call.
- The Greenway collision with Demko that started the fracas that earned Greenway 14 minutes in penalties - barely any mention of the fact that Casey Fitzgerald pinched Greenway into Demko causing much more of a collision than there otherwise would have been. I think Brick finally mentions it as they are cutting back to live action.
- But the worst was on the Mike Moran slash non-call (a very bad penalty, absolutely should have been called, dumb play by Moran). But while the TV is showing no sign of a penalty having been called - they show Moran sitting on the bench for crying out loud - while they are talking about the "penalty". Then even as the puck is dropped with BU clearly having 5 skaters on the ice, Caron claims something like "nevertheless, BC gets the Power Play" before they finally figure out that no penalty had actually been called.

Not their best night.
