The 2014 Pairwise, Bracketology and History Thread`

Re: The 2014 Pairwise, Bracketology and History Thread`

OK, now I know something with the Predictor changed because last night Colgate was as high as 7 with a win while Quinnipiac was at 9. Sigh. I need more sleep.

Priceless, I have had trouble before if I put "back button" rather than "revise brackets". It seems under some circumstances that the Predictor saves your prior games, and then adds more when you repeat the process.

Re: The 2014 Pairwise, Bracketology and History Thread`

So the St Paul region is set. #1 Minnesota v AHA winner // Notre Dame v St Cloud
Cincinnati will be Ferris and Wisconsin, order TBD today.

If you are right about Ferris and Wisconsin, and I think you are, then Lowell and Q-Pac will go to Worcester and bridgeport, with locations determined today. Then...

St Paul: Minny/AHA :: Notre Dame/StCloud
Worcester: BC/?? :: QPac or Lowell/??
Bridgeport: Union/?? :: Lowell or QPac/??
Cincy: Ferris/?? :: Wisco/??

My guess is that QPac and Lowell's opponents will come from the pool of Vermont, Providence, Colgate (Which means Lowell v Colgate and QPac v Verm or Prov), leaving Mankato or one of the above for Ferris/Wisco at Cincinnati in the 2/3 game.

The other 4th seeds are totally unknown at this point, because they might be filled by auto qualifiers.

Someone posed this question in the BC Interruption comments... I don't really have an answer for them?

I was just thinking this last night, but... If Union jumps us, is there a chance we get placed in Bridgeport instead of Worcester? Pretty sure Schenectady is technically closer to Worcester than it is to Bridgeport.

("Us" being, of course, BC)

Re: The 2014 Pairwise, Bracketology and History Thread`

how much closer? i think that would be the question.

About a half hour.

The handbook does say that the 1 gets put in the closest region, then the 2 gets put in the closest remaining, then the 3, then the 4...

Re: The 2014 Pairwise, Bracketology and History Thread`

true, would be interesting to see. i mean 20 minutes or whatever it is shouldn't matter to union but i wonder if they take into consideration where union has more alums. if there was a significant competitive disadvantage by keeping union in bridgeport i could understand.

Re: The 2014 Pairwise, Bracketology and History Thread`

one thing i would like to see is the elimination if consolation games. is the nchc only league that has one now? used to be more

Re: The 2014 Pairwise, Bracketology and History Thread`

Union has a ton of alums in NYC. I can get from Grand Central to Bridgeport by train in 80 minutes. Then the Bridgeport rink is a block from the train station. Hoping we end up there.

Well that's good, I would imagine if Union prefers to be in Bridgeport then the administration will make a point to let the NCAA know, and they'll be there no matter what.

Re: The 2014 Pairwise, Bracketology and History Thread`

Anybody got a list of scores and results for this season? Just some tinkering I want to do.

edit: patrickjoyce82@gmail.com

-----

BC will be in Worcester... just from minimizing distances it makes sense... no sense to send BC long.

-----

next season's goals

1. Implement new RPI and PWR in R
2. Write up quickie model in R for score simulation
3. Blank out this season... fill in, see what happens
3a. Compile league standings (no tiebreakers used)
3b. Execute league tournaments
4. Pester somebody else to pseudo-code conference tie-breakers.
5. Compute league position, league playoff position, NCAA, NCAA seed probabilities

---

6. Add ability to handle in-season tournaments.
7. Add more interesting cross-tabs.

A. re-implement aspects in C to speed computation (hard for me)
B. Come up with means of simulating committee decisions... Re: complete bracketing of NCAA tournament

If Union ends up the higher seed, theoretically the closest site would be Worcester but for attendance, Bridgeport and Worcester both benefit by moving UC. However, is UC really going to lose out on this move with the prospect of having to face QU as a "home team" in the regional final in Bridgeport?

Tune-in tomorrow to the greasy Barry show for more exciting details.

Re: The 2014 Pairwise, Bracketology and History Thread`

We already know the St Paul regional: Minnesota v AHA Champ // Notre Dame v St Cloud

If favorites win:
Worcester - BC v Denver // Lowell v Colgate
Bridgeport - Union v Mankato // QU v Providence
Cincinnati - Ferris v NoDak // Wisco v UVM

If all favorites win, except:
If NoDak somehow chokes away 3rd place game, replace w/ Michigan
If Ohio State wins, they replace NoDak
If UNH wins, replace NoDak with UNH
If Mankato wins, flip Wisconsin and Ferris, Mankato 3 seed in Worcester, Colgate 3 seed and UVM 4 seed in Cincinnati.

If Miami wins, they host in Cincinnati, NoDak plays BC in Worcester.

So what are the rules of when the NCAA can break the true 1-16 seeding process for placement in regionals? I know same conference teams are not to meet in first round. Is there anything else? Can they move a team because of location? I know they have moved teams in the past so it can be done.

Ferris v Mankato is intra-conference. Purple Mavs would have to move.
Notre Dame v St Paul might be interesting;), but Irish should be playing St Cloud

in conference matchups and attendance considerations
