The 2014 Edition of My Team Got Screwed by the Selection Committee Thread

Re: The 2014 Edition of My Team Got Screwed by the Selection Committee Thread

Bowdoin and Oswego.. again. What is this the third time in the last five years?

I was asking my friend the exact same thing. Definitely third time. In previous ?? years? I said four, but I think you are right, last five years.

Of course, a lot will have to do with whether any of these schools actually put in a bid to host a playoff game, and the correct round. Calling UMass-Dartmouth...
Since Salem St owns their rink and Nichols does not, it makes perfect sense to play the game in Smithfield, RI

L25 is a bad stat that favors some regular-season over other regular-season games, and uses a tiny sample size in a division where teams only play 25 (or fewer) regular-season games as it is. It shouldn't be a primary criterion at all, let alone one that the NCAA seems to be giving a ridiculous amount of weight. I'm not sure exactly which selection I'll use to lodge this complaint, but I'll definitely find a way to use it somewhere, darnit.

L25 is truly a dumb metric... A season is a season. (And the RNK cliff is just as ridiculous and redundant, too.)

Right, in 2007 Oswego lost 3 games, 2 of them in their last five before the NCAA's. They then went on to defeat Norwich, St. Norbert and Middlebury to win it all. If the L25 was in play they might have missed the tournament entirely.

I like the idea of the L25 and it should carry some weight. There is a saying "What have you done for me lately". The L25 shows if a team is on the rise or is falling down on the stretch run. A team that has a 20-5 record that has lost five games during the course of the season should be given more consideration over a team that loses the final five games. For some teams it may take a portion of the season to jell and get their chemistry together.

Not necessarily.

Consider Syracuse basketball: with their power forward injured, they went 1-4 down the stretch, while they have gone 26-0 with him playing healthy, including a walloping of FSU in Tallahassee tonight when he was able to contribute again.

If you want to weight any segment of anyone's schedule, you have to include who is actually playing during whatever span of time is in question, and that's not in the least practical... A season has to be considered a body of work, and not be dissected after the fact in some convoluted manner, IMO.

Break for Norwich with a loss and tie to St A's, but Trinity's Stonehill loss is also wiped... Meaning their only losses are to Amherst twice, Williams and Bowdoin in the semis... That's a tough shake to get snubbed... Not sure how Norwich sneaks in over them especially being ranked #1 in the last rankings... Ultimately the only way to control your own destiny and avoid the smoke is to win your conference, but that's a tough shake for sure.

Trinity, by any objective measure, should have gotten-in ahead of Norwich... That's D-3 for you.

Wasn't that the year some idiot started a "Fire Ed Gosek" thread when they lost in the conference tournament and their NCAA birth was really iffy?

I didn't think Utica was allowed to post in this thread :p

Re: The 2014 Edition of My Team Got Screwed by the Selection Committee Thread

The "smoke-filled room" was never more apparent than it was this year. D3hoceky.com couldn't even make solid projections of the field, men or women. On the men's side, they ultimately chose Trinity and left Norwich out g (yeah, like that was gointo happen) after a long discussion why it was a pure guess. On the women's side, they projected three different brackets with three different sets of teams. I guess I think all of the fans got screwed this year. The process stunk to high heaven...

Before I go full-in on the conspiracy theory I wonder if anyone has run the numbers on Trinity v. Norwich v. Geneseo?

At a gut reaction level for Trinity to drop below both with one loss seems mighty fishy, smoked fishy even. More stunning though is that Norwich losses and hosts. Salem State just picked up a lot of fans.

Plattsburgh had better criteria then Norwich and see where it got them...

We have an edge on Norwich....Winning pct, h2h, and cop. They have sos and slight edge in ranked & last 7.
Con't They are 4-2-1 and ee're 4-3....I would think our criteria is better....Norwich thought they were out as well....
