The 2012 New England Patriots

Jason A

We'll be back. You'll see.
The draft is tonight, with the Patriots slated to pick at:

1 (27)
1 (31)
2 (48)
2 (62)
3 (93)
4 (126)

Without some trades, they might be able to shut it down early Saturday afternoon (though they'll need to reach out to UDFAs). Also, note that NE only has five picks in next year's draft (no six or seventh), which could play a factor.

Mike Reiss compiled the following predictions:

Pro Football Weekly's Nolan Nawrocki
27. OLB Shea McClellin (Boise State)
31. TE Coby Fleener (Stanford)

NFL Network's Mike Mayock
27. DE Nick Perry (USC)
31. S Harrison Smith (Notre Dame)

NFL Network's Michael Lombardi
27. DE/OLB Vinny Curry (Marshall)
31. TRADE (for team coming up for QB Brandon Weeden)

NFL Films' Greg Cosell
27. DE/OLB Shea McClellin (Boise State)
31. DL Michael Brockers (LSU)

ESPN's Mel Kiper
27. DE/OLB Courtney Upshaw (Alabama)
31. S Harrison Smith (Notre Dame)

Scouts Inc's Todd McShay
27. DE/OLB Courtney Upshaw (Alabama)
31. S Harrison Smith (Notre Dame)

CBSSports.com Rob Rang
27. DE/OLB Shea McClellin (Boise State)
31. OT Jonathan Martin (Stanford)

Boston Globe's Greg A. Bedard
27. CB/S Trumaine Johnson (Montana)
31. TRADE TE (to Colts coming up for TE Coby Fleener)

Boston Herald's Karen Guregian
27. DE/OLB Courtney Upshaw (Alabama)
31. S Harrison Smith (Notre Dame)

ESPNBoston.com's Mike Reiss
27. S Harrison Smith (Notre Dame)
31. LB Lavonte David (Nebraska)

Re: The 2012 New England Patriots

I can't believe they'd take smith. I see on nfln he is ranked 49th best by some folks. If anything the patsie do not overvalue draft picks.. That is a guy they would take later by definition.

Re: The 2012 New England Patriots

Pats trade 27 and 93 to Cincinnati for 21:

1 (21): DE Chandler Jones, Syracuse
1 (31)
2 (48)
2 (62)
4 (126)

Re: The 2012 New England Patriots

NE trades up again, trading 126 to Denver to move from 31 to 25.

1 (21): DE Chandler Jones, Syracuse
1 (25): LB Dont'a Hightower, Alabama
2 (48)
2 (62)

Re: The 2012 New England Patriots

I'm pleasantly surprised to see the Pats move up (twice) in the first round. Who said you can't teach an old dog new tricks?

Re: The 2012 New England Patriots

My only concern with jones is the idea that we took a light, young pass rusher from the Big East who many project could take 3 years to develop with our first pick. I see the upside, could be a great pick, but is he going to school the LT of the Jets, dolphins and Bills the same way he did the Louisville LT?

It probably exists since they analyze everything, but I'm curious if there is a greater percentage of busts at any one position or if the busts are related more to what team made the bad pick. The Bengals and Raiders could screw up a lot of good analysis with their draft results.

I'm not sure Reggie White looked a lot different than most DE's if they were standing in a parking lot. When you saw him play you realized he was unique. I didn't see this guy looking like he could consistently beat a 6'6" 320 lb NFL LT in any of the clips.

Re: The 2012 New England Patriots

Obviously we don't know how these guys will play once they get here, but I too am relieved Belichick moved up to address the team's glaring needs on the defensive end. A safety and CB in round two makes my day. I was going to scream if I saw another TE or Offensive line pick or basically any pick aside from defense.

Re: The 2012 New England Patriots

NE had a whopping 74 players signed (counting Welker) before the draft, so it's not surprising that they'd pick fewer players than they historically have. But they could end up with just four, after drafting 9, 12, and 12 in the previous three years.

If they make just two more picks, my guesses would be DB/S and WR.

Re: The 2012 New England Patriots

NE takes Illinois safety Tavon Wilson at 48.

1 (21): DE Chandler Jones, Syracuse
1 (25): LB Dont'a Hightower, Alabama
2 (48): S Tavon Wilson, Illinois
2 (62)

Re: The 2012 New England Patriots

Wilson was a head-scratcher, for sure. Mike Reiss makes me feel a bit better by noting that the reaction to the Vollmer pick was similar: http://www.boston.com/sports/football/patriots/reiss_pieces/2009/04/sebastian_vollm.html#comments

NE trades 62 to Green Bay for 90 and 163. That's a long way to drop to add a 5th rounder, isn't it?

1 (21): DE Chandler Jones, Syracuse
1 (25): LB Dont'a Hightower, Alabama
2 (48): S Tavon Wilson, Illinois
3 (90)
5 (163)

Re: The 2012 New England Patriots

Yeah, I'm not sure how they couldn't get a better deal for 62.
Greg A. Bedard‏
For those scoring at home, Patriots traded #62 for #90 & 163. Browns traded 67 to DEN for 87 & 120

Anyway, at 90 NE takes a DE from Arkansas. Just 163 left tomorrow.

1 (21): DE Chandler Jones, Syracuse
1 (25): LB Dont'a Hightower, Alabama
2 (48): S Tavon Wilson, Illinois
3 (90): DE Jake Bequette, Arkansas
5 (163)

Re: The 2012 New England Patriots

I'm a huge fan of Jones and Hightower.

Wilson is interesting, but who knows.

Bequette has potential. If him and Jones both pan out your DLine is looking mighty solid.

Very, very happy with the draft so far.

Re: The 2012 New England Patriots

Hey, I'm out in Pittsburgh for the weekend. Very nice waterfront. Cleanest city I've seen in a while. Stopped into the Tilted Kilt by Heinz Field. Kind of like a Scottish Hooters. They sure like their Stillers out here.

they do...

TK is a franchise. i've been in the one in tampa. you should invest in one back home! :D

if you need something to do, head to Blush on 9th street. if you go to the vip rooms you get to take an elevator. something different ;)

Re: The 2012 New England Patriots

Hi - I am a Patriots fan going off on a bit of a tangent here. Please help me settle a bet. My cousin says that if Wes Welker had caught that ball that it would have won the SB. I say no. PLEASE CORRECT ME IF MY ASSESSMENT IS WRONG!! There was 3:48 left on the clock IF he had caught it we would have been first down at the giants 23. thet had one timeout, and the 2 minute warning. If we did not get another first down and they used their time out and the 2 minute warning after 3 plays and a field goal they would have got the ball back with 58 seconds left and down by 5 pts. So thus they still would have had a chance. Am I correct or is my cousin?? OR am I partially correct in my assessment and if so how much am I off?? Thank you in advance!!!

On the Felger & Mazz radio show, Felger chucked a yellow hi-lighter across the room at a copy of a draft preview magazine held by Marc Bertrand and it hit Jake Bequette. Granted, it was for the #62 pick but that still is an amazing coincidence. It also shows that ESPN is paying Mel Kiper way too much for his expert analysis. You can get the same analysis by throwing a marker at a list of players :p

USA TODAY SPORTS WEEKLY had Chandler Jones going to NE but at the wrong pick number.

Re: The 2012 New England Patriots

NE trades 163, acquired from Green Bay ... to Green Bay, for a sixth and two sevenths.

2 (48): S Tavon Wilson, Illinois
3 (90): DE Jake Bequette, Arkansas
