The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Any signs of Women's Hockey on the opening ceremonies?

Looks like I wont be arriving in Vancouver until tomorrow afternoon instead of mid morning as my flight was just delayed.

I really wish now I would have left sooner as opposed to waiting until after the UW Women's Game this afternoon.....

i saw ruggiero, cahow, engstrom, knight, the lams, and schauss.

Hey Arm thanks for doing this. I may not say it often enough but I appreciate your attention to hockey news and getting it to us. Q:D

No offense to my many Canadian friends, but I am seeing some of that nit wit, I'm a Canadian thus a hockey expert, stupidity that begs me to say "You, sir, are an idiot."

What the...NICE...No offense to you buddy, but your comment is offensive! And you're ignorant.

I tend to agree with the poster...at least for the women's game. The big ice is way to big for their game. However, on the men's side, I could see a faster more wide open game on thebig sheet, and thus it would be a better game. Most NA players grew up on the smaler rinks, and since the NHL plays on them, and that's where the majority of the Olympians are plying, that's probably another reason they decided on this format.

I could go on, but I'm sure it would be wasted...so...enjoy the Games.

Don't know how much interest there would be among you folks, but I had the chance to talk to Ruggiero, Cahow, Chu, Botterill, and Vaillancourt a couple of weeks ago and just threw the interview online now with the games starting today. The link is here if anyone is interested. It's a little Harvard-centric, but there's some great answers about playing former teammates, and what playing in Vancouver will be like.

Looking forward to some great hockey.

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

As to Winter Games, NBC web site offers to ' find ' your athlete and 'alert' you as to when they are playing their sport or game. Careful, they only have 'major' folks it appears. For instance, no Cherie Piper from women's team Canada ice hockey but they do show Gillian Apps. Three other 'minor'- I guess to NBC, athletes aren't listed at all in X-country, alpine; one Canadian, one Kiwi and Murphy, the lone athlete from Bermuda.

Sweden takes out Switzerland 3-0 to open the Olympics.

Kim Martin gets her 2nd Olympic shutout. Her first was 8 years ago today against Kazakhstan in Salt Lake.

Flo played well in net for Switzerland but a lack of solid defense and no offense was the downfall for the Swiss.

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

I hope Zuzana can stymie her first round opponent...probably not much chance of that as I believe the team in front of her will be greatly overmatched.

Much as was the case with Schelling for the Swiss I thought. Schelling played well but got little help in her zone from teammates.

It's almost 6 on 1. Zuzana's made some great saves, but there's only so much one can do...

That 5th Canadian goal was the worst call I've seen all year -- blow the whistle for the delayed penatly, and then say, "Okay, they scored long after the whistle, but let's count it anyway." Sad. The officiating is almost as overmatched as Slovakia. And then the crowd cheers.:o

Yeah, I didn't get that either.

Mr. Patrick and Cammi agreed. Raw deal for the Slovaks...but in the end that one raw deal isn't going to matter much. It's like Zuzana against the world...I thought Tomcikova made several brilliant saves but you can't make those all day long.

She is obviously used to playing at a much higher level than most of her teammates. She had to shove one of her D to the side to get a look at the puck; later, another D tried to give her the goalie stick while a shot was incoming. I guess they never had to deal with some of these situations while playing Bulgaria.

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Is goal differential a tiebreaker in this tournament, similar to world juniors?

I hate to see a team get completely embarrassed the way Slovakia did today. Here's hoping they win a game before they get out of Vancouver.

Yes.

I don't know who they'd be able to beat. Sweden? No. Switzerland? Another probable no. I think Russia, China have more experience at this as well. Tomcikova would have to commit absolute larceny.

Re: The 2010 Winter Olympics Women's Ice Hockey Tournament

Looks like Tomcikova needs to work on her backchecking.

Regardless of the score, it is a great accomplishment for her team to be in the Games. This is Thee World Class Tournament at which players the likes of Zuzanna can showcase their talents to appreciative fans of the sport from across the globe, not just their native country.

Those 60 minutes just made her and her abilities more well known than anything else she could have done up to that point.
