The 2010 CCHA Championships 3/19-20: FSU, Miami, Michigan, and NMU

Re: The 2010 CCHA Championships 3/19-20: FSU, Miami, Michigan, and NMU

where do you see that? I can't find it. On directv? they have the ECAC final listed.

I just have GCI, which is the local digital cable provider in Anchorage. Although with my sports package I get all three FCS feeds (Pacific, Central, Eastern), so that might have something to do with it. I believe it's on the FCS Central station.

Re: The 2010 CCHA Championships 3/19-20: FSU, Miami, Michigan, and NMU

The problem is that it's not an event like the Final Five, and there's no local interest on top of it. I imagine the WCHA final still has 5-6,000 Gopher fans at it despite their not being there, and there are people that go yearly regardless. If you did a check on people's locations when they got tickets, what % is Minneapolis as opposed to Detroit in the CCHA's. Sure, it's the economy to a large degree, but that's a massive hurdle to overcome.

The other problem is that there's no easy answer to fix it. There's no other arena or city in the CCHA footprint that's going to be an improvement. I've been to 4 NCAA regionals in Grand Rapids, and they do nothing to hype it, and as such, the only people there are hockey fans of the teams and maybe 1,000 random Michigan/MSU/Ferris/Western fans coming in from the area (This is an estimate based on jersey sightings)

We'll see how Fort Wayne does next week, and I've heard they've made some effort at marketing, but it isn't really ideally located. Neither is Chicago. Detroit's probably the best location geography wise...but it's Detroit. Even when I go to Detroit, it's a day trip and not a weekend long thing.

Yeah just checked again, according to GCI it's on FCS Atlantic live at 3:30 ADT (7:30 on the other end of the continent). Wisco/Denver is on right now on FCS Pacific (and Bucky is beating the snot out of Denver, 3-0 in the 1st).

It cracks me up that AK has two NCAA hockey teams, yet the only decent college hockey tv coverage we get in Anchorage is FCS broadcasting CCHA and WCHA games from down south. Fairbanks is a little bit better since Fox 7 up there usually picks up the TV feeds whenever UAF is on the road, but television and print coverage in Anchorage is abysmal (ask any UAA fan about the infamous Doyle Woody).

Gotcha, so that is the title game listed. Stupid time zones...I got excited. Can't find any video anywhere....

Columbus is the only other big city in the CCHA with a big arena, but quite frankly I don't ever see a conference that is as Michigan-centric as the CCHA moving its tournament and awards to Ohio, plus Columbus isn't really a hub city like Detroit is. Another option might be Chicago (and given a choice between spending a weekend in Chicago versus Detroit, give me Chicago anytime), but that's a longish drive for most of the CCHA schools, and it's dangerously close to WCHA country.

The only other option I can think of would be to scrap the 3rd-place game and promote the hell out of the championship game at JLA.

No way Im picking against Michigan after their performance last night.

Didn't have Big Ten so couldn't watch game, but I feel NMU can do good work on a consistent basis. Will be a great game either way.

There is no other Viable option to host the tournament. Columbus is a bad idea and Chicago doesn't make sense. The CCHA just needs to do a better job, watching all of the conference yesterday, besides the AHA, they all had very good attendance. No excuse to not have good attendance in Detroit but the CCHA doesn't do a good enough job of marketing and/or making it enticing for fans to come.

Two things:
1) The CCHA needs to get MORE ON TV. Especially around Detroit. Cover ALL TEAMS CONSISTENTLY, and you may find fans that live in the Metro Detroit area. You all may find is shocking, but there are a lot of alumn from other schools than UM and MSU that live here..... So that may raise the local fan to want to attend. This also is a good time to advertise the CCHA playoffs, like they already do.

2) The CCHA needs to work with the Detroit Visitors Bureau to make this event an event. I've been pestering the CCHA at every chance they are around to change the advertising so that people from outside of SE MI will want to come- show the museums, restaurants, etc- and find a good deal with the hotels (which they do). That fan fest is barely mentioned- you have to really search for it. For a two night stay- arrive Friday early enough to see the game, visit stuff until the consolation game, and leave Sunday morning- there's more than enough to do and see- enough to even prompt people to leave in the afternoon. The CCHA does nothing to promote Detroit, and they do NOT treat the tournament sponsors very well- nobody knows who or what sponsors the tournamnet (we went to Vicente's the year they were a sponsor, and the CCHA didn't give them a sign, or barely a mention at the games, just a handful of tickets- basically forcing the SPONSOR to advetise the events!).

It seems as if there's no real incentive for the CCHA to get more fans, or they would do these rather obvious things. Sad, but true.

I tried to do some promotion here, and a handful of fans did take the time to check things out- any feedback?

Anyway, it's one of my issues with the CCHA. they could easily do better.

Agree on all. They need to work something out to get more TV coverage for sure. But they need to make it more appealing and enticing for schools not located in Michigan to get students and fans up there. I enjoy watching a game at the Joe and getting down there isn't a hassel for me. Detroit isn't as bad as many think, it isn't the greatest downtown but I think some are afraid to go down there. I just don't think the CCHA does a good enough job at 1. promoting the tournament and 2. making it worth it to go to the tournament.

Look at hockey east or the WCHA and see how they make it so successful. Maybe it is a mind set that the Minny fans will go no matter what and Mich fans aren't that way. I don't know, but I have been there in years past where it has been absolutely packed.

Re: The 2010 CCHA Championships 3/19-20: FSU, Miami, Michigan, and NMU

Since it's tied at 1 after 2. Worth pointing out if this game ends in a tie and Michigan wins Ferris gets in and would give CCHA 5 teams in and Miami top overall seed with Denver's loss.

Re: The 2010 CCHA Championships 3/19-20: FSU, Miami, Michigan, and NMU

Miami beats Ferris 2-1. Great hockey game.

Miami locks up the top overall seed in the National tournament with win and Denver's loss. Ferris is firmly on the bubble, but they will need to be rooting hard for Boston College and Cornell to hold firm and win their tournies.

Re: The 2010 CCHA Championships 3/19-20: FSU, Miami, Michigan, and NMU

No. Michigan winning tonight would kill Ferris' tournament hopes.
