The 114th Congress: Two More Years!

Re: The 114th Congress: Two More Years!

Too bad the Catholic Church making bishops retire at 75 can't be copied onto the US Government.

Not quite. You have to submit your resignation at 75, but the Pope does not have to accept it. Case in point, DC's Cardinal Wuerl hit 75 last November. Not a blip.

Right there in the Constitution; that part about elections and stuff.

But as SCOTUS pointed out, if Congress wanted term limits on itself, it needs an amendment. While the odds of it gathering the necessary states to pass are good, it is unlikely that the amendment will garner 2/3 in both Houses.

I'm against term limits for reasons I've gone into several times before.

My point is the people can always term limit anybody they want.

Re: The 114th Congress: Two More Years!

That's exactly right. He didn't last very long in his post, did he? The Roman Senate term-limited that guy real nice and quick.

Romans, countrymen, and lovers! hear me for my
cause, and be silent, that you may hear: believe me
for mine honour, and have respect to mine honour, that
you may believe: censure me in your wisdom, and
awake your senses, that you may the better judge.
If there be any in this assembly, any dear friend of
Caesar's, to him I say, that Brutus' love to Caesar
was no less than his. If then that friend demand
why Brutus rose against Caesar, this is my answer:
--Not that I loved Caesar less, but that I loved
Rome more. Had you rather Caesar were living and
die all slaves, than that Caesar were dead, to live
all free men? As Caesar loved me, I weep for him;
as he was fortunate, I rejoice at it; as he was
valiant, I honour him: but, as he was ambitious, I
slew him. There is tears for his love; joy for his
fortune; honour for his valour; and death for his
ambition. Who is here so base that would be a
bondman? If any, speak; for him have I offended.
Who is here so rude that would not be a Roman? If
any, speak; for him have I offended. Who is here so
vile that will not love his country? If any, speak;
for him have I offended.

Is there any chance Ryan could get Cantored? He's from the third-richest family in the state and he married into obnoxious OK wealth, so I have to think if the polling gets tight he or one of the more well-heeled in-laws is going to start calling in favors.

There's no way will the GOPe will allow that to happen to a sitting Speaker.
