The 114th Congress: Two More Years!

Re: The 114th Congress: Two More Years!

If Drumpf wasnt endorsing the guy running against him I would say there is a chance...but he should be safe for now.

Re: The 114th Congress: Two More Years!

Paul Ryan faces primary voters today.
Pass or Fail?

The consensus is he's gonna make it through. Here's the thing: his Neo-Randian economics is morally disgusting and mentally puerile, but he's done a competent political job as Speaker when faced with a sh-tshow, and the GOP is going to need politicians to repair the damage after Trump. If I were a Republican, I would re-up. The poor sap is actually one of their least craptastic leaders.

Also: dude really wants to be president with the kind of naked, septic ache of a Christie, so let his freak flag fly.

Re: The 114th Congress: Two More Years!

Ryan can want to be president all he wants, he wont be president. He shot his wad 4 years ago running with Romney and everyone saw who he was and what he stood for. He aint flipping any swing states with his economic ideas or the things he has said about the poor. His inability to walk away from Drumpf will be the final nail as no one in the middle will back him and the independents wont either.

And he knows this, that is why he is Speaker even though he never wanted the job.

Agreed. I never understood the Paul Ryan Is The GOP's Savior attitude. Maybe he is amongst the Beltway pundit cocktail party set, but he has no appeal to the electorate at large His budgets are idiotic and his social policies Talibanesque.

The GOP's problem isn't Trump. He isn't the one who got outvoted in 5 of 6 elections. The problem both the corporate wing's policies and the Duck Dynasty crowd policies that the party embraces are a non-starter for the majority of the electorate. Unless that changes, or the party changes its core beliefs, they're screwed.

They might still be able to get away with the Duck Dynasty social stuff if they had economics that wasn't such obvious b.s. Lots of people in this country believe the various social inanities the DD folks broadcast. But basically nobody except billionaires and the Republicans in Congress believes in trickle down and supply side anymore. 30 years of failure is definitive.

Unless they knew along, and it was just a heist. But that's impossible, right?

Right?

You can't get away with the social issue stuff anymore because liberal activists will publicize your views. From the 70's to the 90's knucks' enjoyed a sort of freedom of hypocrisy from the mainstream media. They could tell the Christian Coalition people they were against all abortion in all circumstances, but then wink at their pals in the press to say they really didn't mean that. Nowadays when someone like Rubio comes out and says he's still against abortion in all circumstances even for people affected by the Zika virus, daily kos and their ilk are all over it. That eventually gets out to the rest of the lefties and he becomes a non-starter on a national level.

Same thing with gay rights. Used to be Reagan could condemn all gays while at the same time hanging around with old friend Rock Hudson and nobody would call him on it. Can't get away with that anymore.

Lewis will win. The congressional races are never tight, even when Pres. Obama won the district, Rep. Kline was getting over 60%. Lewis isn't a religious hardliner, often referring to himself as a fallen or lapsed Catholic, he's an economics man with a masters in Political Sci-Economics emphasis, and he's a government restraint guy, which reads well with this district. Add to that the popularity his radio show had in this area, he's going to do well. This is an affluent district, people care about their pocketbooks and are casual with their religion.

Yeah, contrast her victory and sure to be election into office to the Trump campaign.

Ugh Jason Lewis...

He spent years on the radio ripping this State. Moved to North Carolina where he was interviewed and said how much he loved being there and now he moves back to the State he hates to run for office? Jason, you don't like it here. LEAVE.

The guy had a local show where he was paid to talk politics, so anyone in that situation will be critical of the state govt, it's just a matter of whether you agree with that person or not. Also, aside from the govt he loved living here, didn't want to leave except for a much better job in NC. People make that move all the time. That's how my family ended up here in 1978, and a great many others over the years too.

As you say, radio personality is putting on an act. A politician is also an actor. This isn't a big stretch to me. The patron saint of GOP orthodoxy was an actor.

He doesn't get a pass from me for the vicious bile he spewed for years around here and what he said after he left.
