The 114th Congress: Two More Years!

Re: The 114th Congress: Two More Years!

I'm not a big fan of lists, especially those that may not fare so well if the Sixth Amendment was to be pressed against them.

Well, a lot of Republicans are very very very into them. Otherwise they wouldn't exist in the first place, except perhaps at the FBI privately.

Re: The 114th Congress: Two More Years!

And what was his opinion of shutting the government down...let me guess that was ok.

Or his opinion of when Republicans did the exact same thing in 2008 (for a comparatively silly issue).

I did not see the GOP storm the well of the House in 2009 throwing a temper tantrum over PPACA.

Work within the rules. Temper tantrums and Occupy are for spoiled children.

They did it in 2008 over drilling for oil.

Seems Alan Dershowitz isn't a fan of the move.
"I'm a liberal Democrat, supporter of Hillary Clinton," Dershowitz, a Harvard Law School professor emeritus, told CNN host Don Lemon. "They hurt her by making fools of themselves, sitting in on Congress and pulling this kind of stunt.

"If Hillary Clinton is going to win, she's going to win because she has gravitas and because the Republicans are a bunch of buffoons.

"Now, the Democrats are a bunch of buffoons, sitting on the house floor, screaming and singing," he added. "This can't help. They have to be serious."

"They have to show gravitas if they're going to win this election against [Donald] Trump," Dershowitz told Lemon. "Passion and anger determine votes — and passion and anger could bring Donald Trump to the presidency."

Given the behavior of the Republicans in Congress since 2009, this lecture is highly ironic.

Re: The 114th Congress: Two More Years!

As someone that in many ways leans left, can someone educate me on why this 'sit-in' is not silly (regardless of anything came before)? No snark please. ;)

It gets attention. Sometimes that's all you can do when you protest -- you are surfacing the issue and forcing people to meet their conscience.

In the case of the GOP, of course, there's no such thing.

Protesting usually involves petitioning for a redress of grievances, assuming you have no say. Funny thing is, these gun owners (all 26 of them have one) do have a say.

The petition for the redress of grievance is the request for the vote. The lack of a say is the GOP leadership refusal to allow that vote.

I will admit you put their case even better than they did. Thank you for helping clarify exactly why this is a textbook protest.

Re: The 114th Congress: Two More Years!

No wonder Grassley has been flippety-floppy lately. He's just 1 point up and Hillary is leading Trump by 14 in IA. That's an 8 point pickup over Obama's win in 2012 -- enough to flip GA were it evenly distributed across the country (which it will obviously not be).

Re: The 114th Congress: Two More Years!

Fold it up and put them in Medicare. Done.

Better still, just open Medicare to everyone. Imagine the savings in bureaucracy of reducing the ten trillion overlapping / hole riddled programs that exist today with one program.
