Re: The 112th Congress: Debt ceiling edition

Republican "leadership" is an oxymoron and an absolute joke. If they can't even get it together amongst themselves in the House, what the hell would happen if they controlled both the Senate and the Presidency too? Yikes. Its far beyond time for The Boner to resign. He's completely useless.

UPDATE: Just announced. No vote tonight. Idiots.

Re: The 112th Congress: Debt ceiling edition

NO vote tonight.

Boner has NO CONTROL OVER HIS CAUCUS. HE'S A EUNIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Eunuch.

Eugene Robinson in tonite's WaPa has a nice analogy.

This is getting fun. Political careers are getting trashed as we watch -- on both sides.

So when does Pelosi stepup and pledge her caucus's support behind a more reasonable bill along with the non-tea party wing of the GOP?

Never. Hoyer may be doing all the behind the scenes negotiation. GOP despises Pelosi but probably will work with Hoyer.

Re: The 112th Congress: Debt ceiling edition

Remember the 9/11 first responders bill that Congress finally passed? Finally did the right thing and gave those folks the health coverage they deserved. We were all proud Americans that day.

Turns out the bill doesn't cover cancer.

I can buy that. They'll bring 100ish Republicans onside as long as Pelosi does nothing for the next week but say "Yea" when it comes by. It's one thing to bend to save face/the country. It's another if they have to do so and listen to Pelosi's nasally "I told you so."

Re: The 112th Congress: Debt ceiling edition

Because no successful business has ever used debt for anything other than long term projects. Afterall, there's absolutely no market for commercial paper or other forms of short and medium term commercial lines of credit.
There won't be after we default. :p

Re: The 112th Congress: Debt ceiling edition

The GOP leadership (whoever they are now) says there will be a vote tomorrow. They also said several times that there would be a vote tonight. Also, if there was a vote tonight the bill would pass. Oh, and the sun will rise in the west. At this point the credibility of anyone with an R next to their name is pretty shaky.

Wonder if Boner regrets walking away from the Grand Bargain now.

That wouldn't have passed through the House. I don't see enough Republicans agreeing to "revenue increases" under any circumstances.

The plan he should have taken is Reid's, since there's nothing related to revenue in it and the cuts should be palatable to enough Republicans to get it through the House (it allows them to vote for cuts and hold the line on taxes).

Re: The 112th Congress: Debt ceiling edition

From Boehner's inbox....

Speaker Boehner:

My name is Mr.Moses Odiaka.I work in the credit and accounts department of
Union Bank of NigeriaPlc,Lagos, Nigeria. I write you in respect of a
foreign customer with a Domicilliary account. His name is Engineer Manfred
Becker. He was among those who died in a plane crash here in Nigeria
during the reign of late General Sani Abacha.

Since the demise of this our customer, Engineer Manfred Becker, who was an
oil merchant/contractor, I have kept a close watch of the deposit records
and accounts and since then nobody has come to claim the money in this a/c
as next of kin to the late Engineer. He had only $918.5bilion in his a/c
and the a/c is coded. It is only an insider that could produce the code or
password of the deposit particulars. As it stands now, there is nobody in
that position to produce the needed information other than my very self
considering my position in the bank.

Based on the reason that nobody has come forward to claim the deposit as
next of kin, I hereby ask for your co operation in using your name as the
next of kin to the deceased to send these funds out to a foreign offshore
bank a/c for mutual sharing between myself and you. At this point I am the
only one with the information because I have removed the deposit file from
the safe.By so doing, what is required is to send an aplication laying
claims of the deposit on your name as next of kin to the late Engineer. I
will need your full name and address, telephone number and the bank account
for the federal treasury. Upon receipt of that information I can begin the lengthy
process of transmitting the cash to your account.

Finally i want you to understand that the request for a foreigner as the
next of kin is occassioned by the fact that the customer was a foreigner
and for that reason alone a local cannot represent as next of kin. I am currently
in europe for a six months course, you can reach me on this number for further
discussion 0031 623 866 723.Kindly send your reply to my private email
address stated below.

Trusting to hear from you,

I remain Respectfully yours,

Mr Moses Odiaka.

It friggin disgusts me how out of touch these people are...all of them Dems and GOP.

It doesn't cover cancer because it was meant to cover health issues due to the stuff they did at ground zero. They did a study to determine whether or not there was an increased cancer rate in the people that were covered under the bill and there wasn't. I don't really have a problem with it.

I think he thinks he always has that option. If Boehner were to agree to Reid he'd also have House Dems, and he could cut the legs from under the Tea Party, who would prove they can't get anything despite their jihadism.

I didn't think that was at all likely until last night, when they so publicly effed him. The rest of the GOP doesn't care about Boehner, but they care about being primaried and they care about being forced into nominating some TP-approved mental midget who loses 4OO EV in the general.

It's also worth mentioning that Fox and Rush and the rest of that breed get more outrage and better ratings and more loot when they are in the "oh noes, we are such victims!" position. It hurts them financially to win elections, because then they have to defend responsible action and compromise. As the out party, they can just cash checks from their permanently inflamed, bitter audience.

They did a study. Well, that's just great. They did a study. We cover cancer for congressmen. Does being in Congress cause cancer?

yeah, because exposure to asbestos dust does not increase your chance of developing lung cancer...

But the plan was not to cover all of their healthcare needs, it was to cover healthcare due to issues caused by their work at ground zero. It would be nice if they would cover cancer, because there probably are a few cases of cancer caused by things they were exposed to there, but there are also probably people who got cancer from smoking for 40 years before that. That was the point of the study.

The study found that there was a lack of evidence to add cancer to the list. The reason being the lack of peer reviewed literature on the subject. Only one article and then two models to estimate the risk.

Re: The 112th Congress: Debt ceiling edition

Cantor isn't sure the Boner plan will get to a vote today either. Obama is going to give an address at ~10:30.

Meanwhile the AARP endorses Reid's plan.
