Re: The 112th Congress: Debt ceiling edition

I think he thinks he always has that option. If Boehner were to agree to Reid he'd also have House Dems, and he could cut the legs from under the Tea Party, who would prove they can't get anything despite their jihadism.

I didn't think that was at all likely until last night, when they so publicly effed him. The rest of the GOP doesn't care about Boehner, but they care about being primaried and they care out being forced into nominating some TP-approved mental midget who loses 4OO EV in the general.

It's also worth mentioning that Fox and Rush and the rest of that breed get more outrage and better ratings and more loot when they are in the "oh noes, we are such victims!" position. It hurts them financially to win elections, because then they have to defend responsible action and compromise. As the out party, they can just cash checks from their permanently inflamed, bitter audience.

Right on about the "we're victims so keep giving us money" commentary. Regarding The Boner, he can end this right now (with Pelosi's help).

Have Senate pass Gang of 6 plan. This gets 56 votes (all Dems, 3 GOP'ers Coburn-Chambliss-forget the 3rd one). It won't be that hard to find 4 more votes to stick it to DeMint's filibuster. Say two Maine senators, Brown and probably Graham. Send that plan to House with Pelosi's full support. Say she gets about 180+ members to vote yes (excluding the Kucinich's of the world). That means Boner only needs about 35 of his own members to vote for something he endorses. How hard can that be? The guy's been in Congress for 30 years. He can't find 15% of his caucus to support him?

Yes, this means the end of his Speakership, but you know what? That's already over. Might as well do the right thing while you can.

Doesn't this plan have to be introduced and passed in the House first?

Re: The 112th Congress: Debt ceiling edition

But the plan was not to cover all of their healthcare needs, it was to cover healthcare due to issues caused by their work at ground zero. It would be nice if they would cover cancer, because there probably are a few cases of cancer caused by things they were exposed to there, but there are also probably people who got cancer from smoking for 40 years before that. That was the point of the study.

Sweet. Maybe we shouldn't cover smokers at all then because they caused their own cancer. In fact when you go to the doctor the first thing we should do is determine fault. Then we can determine who pays for it.

Sorta, but I think they can take any bill from the House and change it then send it back. I'm wondering it they can do that with the Cut Cap and Screw plan since it already passed. It probably comes down to if they tabled it or voted it down.

The third one was Crapo. Whose staffer just got voted "hottest person on the Hill," IINM, so there's that, too.

Edit: no, that was Grassley's staffer, who was in my opinion meh.

The #2, however... JFC... Chuck Fleishmann is a happy man.

Full list here. And yeah, every Republican male on the list appears to be gay.

Re: The 112th Congress: Debt ceiling edition

So, the downgrade looks like a sure thing and the GDP numbers this morning are crap and the stock market is in free fall today.

Thanks, Congress.

Re: The 112th Congress: Debt ceiling edition

Kep, the second one looks like a Russian spy!

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Re: The 112th Congress: Debt ceiling edition

So BHO is going to speak @ 10:30? IIRC its going to be about getting 50 MPG cars. Don't know who's going to buy them (Volt), but by gosh, we'll have them even if we have to own a company to build them!

Meanwhile Rome is about to burn -- at least he'll be able to get to Martha's Vineyard on one tank of gas.

Re: The 112th Congress: Debt ceiling edition

Free-fall isn't bleeding 1-2% a day; it's what happened in the last week of September / first week of October in 2008 (a 25% drop in the S&P).

It's only the beginning. The downgrade is all but a sure thing and once that happens all bets are off.

When Bakunin is telling you your cynicism is outrunning your insight, you should take heed. :)

The TPers who seem to be rooting for default are starting to give off a creepy firebug vibe. I wonder how many of the true righty tighties think they are doing God's work.

In the end, it's always the Utopians who cause the most misery. What is the last decade but the slaughter of vast numbers of innocents by a few halfwit religious dispensationalists of whatever stripe?

Your argument might be valid if the bill was a health insurance plan, but it wasn't. The bill was meant to cover health issues specifically caused by their work at ground zero, not any health issues they might have.

I fail to see how anybody can blame Obama for this mess. Every time he reaches a deal Boner goes back to his caucus and gets his nuts cut off, then has to walk back to Obama and say "sorry I can't deliver". The GOP House leadership should have had a sense months ago of who they could count on before they pushed this to a crisis. Sometimes its okay to assign blame more to one side than the other. This is one of those times.

I do get a laugh though of how cowed by the GOP the press is. Were this happening to Pelosi all we'd be hearing about is how the Dems were about to disintegrate. Instead some bonehead on CNN was talking about how this is being played on the GOP's terms??? Open rebellion in the House is in "GOP terms"? Over a plan that has no hope of becoming law? Yikes. Where do they find these people?

I can still blame him. Even with complete control over both Houses and the Presidency the Democrats never passed a budget. It never ceases to amaze what Republicans can accomplish as the minority party and what the Democrats can't as the majority.

Re: The 112th Congress: Debt ceiling edition

He waited too long to tell the voters to start yelling at our incompetent Congress. If he told them to do that back in March, perhaps we'd already have this stupid issue solved.

And yes, the Democrats had a couple years to play with where they could have passed some semblance of a budget or put some sort of long-lasting approach to the debt in place, but they failed miserably on both counts. Now we have to get a divided Congress to agree on something (good luck) rather than a unified one with a couple turncoat Republican Senators. Brilliant.

Blame useless Harry Reid. The reason why the Dems couldn't accomplish what they should have when in the majority is because of that clueless idiot.

No, the President should take blame for it. He defers to Congress way too much. Pelosi did her job, of that there is no question.
