Tennis anyone?

Re: Tennis anyone?

I was still sleepy this morning while I was flipping through the match, but I think Ferrer had a set point in the second to go up two sets to love.

Then Murray appeared to be in total control, up a set and a break, and Ferrer fought back to force the fourth-set tiebreaker.

All in all, some good tennis.

Murray even said in the post match interview that on the set point he thought Ferrer was going to make it 5-3, not set point. Courier was taken back by that.

Re: Tennis anyone?

Clijsters beats Li Na 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 to win her fourth Grand Slam and first Australian Open. Li Na was a mess at the end of the match, calling for challenges that weren't even close, as well as complaining about the crowd and flash photography.

Re: Tennis anyone?

That was a horrible final from the women. I thought Kuznetsova/Schiavone was a great match, easily the best, most entertaining women's match I've ever watched. And then that final was pretty much everything I hate about women's tennis. Completely one dimensional, terrible serving, both players afraid to travel inside the service line.

At least Dick Enberg finally shut up about how historical this was for Chinese tennis--which was over the top and annoying for the first set-- about the third time Li Na *****ed to the umpire about the Chinese fans.

Re: Tennis anyone?

I realize this is sort of a dead time for casual tennis fans, but Djokovic and Nadal just played a great final in Miami, which Djokovic won 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (4). The match went almost 3.5 hours.

Re: Tennis anyone?

Qualifier Stefan Robert just ousted #6M Berdych. How unlikely was this? The winner is a 31-year old journeyman who had never won a match at Roland-Garros. His career earnings are less than $500,000 - Berdych had won over $8M and had already passed the $500K mark this year.

US tennis will have a bad spring - Roddick and both Williams sisters are out, Oudin lost in the first round and John Isner only has to play #1 seed Rafa Nadal. The only American who has a chance to win some matches is #10M Mardy Fish.

Re: Tennis anyone?

American Coco Vandeweghe is 3 points from inning the tiebreak against #25 Maria Kirilenko. It's nice to hear the French crowd applaud enthusiastically whenever she loses a point. Cheering for Kirilenko would be one thing, but that's not what they're doing.

And Maria just came from 2-5 down in the tiebreak to win 7-5 on a ridiculous ruling. And now the crowd is hooting at Vandeweghe. Disgusting.

Ivanovic knocked out in the first round - lost the first set 7-6 after multiple set points, won the second set 6-0, and then lost the third set 6-2.

Maybe she should just give up tennis and do the modeling thing full-time.

Re: Tennis anyone?

I didn't follow much the first two days, but Isner has taken Nadal to a fifth set (!!!) and Ryan Harrison is tied at a set apiece with Robin Soderling. Very interesting.

Re: Tennis anyone?

I was pretty disappointed this morning. I woke up, saw Sharapova was scheduled second on the court today, went back to sleep, woke up again to see match and it was already over...she only lost 3 games. I didn't see all of the Ivanovic match, but what I saw she looked like a petty brat. Yelling when her opponent would hit the ball out? Pumping her fist after any point she won? Really? She was ranked 20th and should have won this match easily. There was no reason for those antics - and she still lost!

Isner now down a break in the 5th.

Re: Tennis anyone?

Isner gave Nadal everything he had but came up short, 6-4 in the 5th. Best match so far.

Re: Tennis anyone?

That's not a very good sign for Nadal.

I'm very interested to see how far Djokovic can take this streak. Talk about peaking at the right time. Logic would dictate somebody will knock him off eventually, but he's playing great while the entirety of the men's field seems to be down right now.

Re: Tennis anyone?

For some reason I found it hard to get excited by the French Open. Maybe because US players seldom do well. Isner played well, but not quite good enough. :(

There are no seeded US Women in the field, and the only seeded US Man is #10 Fish. ESPN better hope for some compelling stories and big names (how much would they love Sharapova to make a run?) because the American contingent will be warming up for Wimbledon by this weekend.

Re: Tennis anyone?

My apologies to Sam Querry...the American is ranked #24M, so he is also ranked.

But he lost today anyway, so Fish is now the only American male still alive in the draw.

There are two American women in the draw but their next matches are against the #9 and #10 seeds, so that should be that. Fish plays a Frenchman in the 3rd round and if he wins he gets Nadal. Wimbledon, here we come!

What the hell happened to Kim Clijsters? She had two match points and led 5-1 in the second set on her way to advancing and then she hit a wall and ended up losing. Absolutely bizarre.

Meanwhile Maria looked to be out of it down a set and two breaks against Garcia and then never lost another game winning 6-0 in the third. The draw is now open for Maria and she shouldn't face a stiff challenge until a potential quarter vs #6 Li Na. With Clijsters out, it's pretty much anyone's to win.

Edit: Watching the Sharapova replay on ESPN2 and Garcia was about to get her second break to go up 4-1 and Shriver said she was the now a threat to win the title and Andy Murray tweeted that she was on her way to #1 in the world...then she lost the final 10 games of the match.

Monfils and Ferrer are in a fifth set of a very entertaining match. Monfils is up a break right now, 4-2.

The women's draw has gotten . . . interesting. Could Schiavone actually pull this off again?

Re: Tennis anyone?

Djokovich just did something unheard of at this level.

Down a set and a break, he had break point to get back on serve in the second set. Federer served what appeared to be an ace but the ball was called out. Novak went to where the ball landed, pointed to the mark and told the chair umpire it was good. That made it deuce and two points later Federer won the game and the set to go up two sets to love. If he'd kept his mouth shut, he'd have a second serve at break point.

He may lose the match but he won a lot of fans today.

Very classy move.
