Re: Sweet Valentine! The saga of the 2012 Boston Red Sox
'expert' on ESPN today said that a GM mentioned to him that Cherington should get executive of the year for getting rid of those salaries and getting prospects back.
I like the move and reject all the naysayers whining about how the team is in for 3 rebuilding years. Last time I checked Oakland and Pittsburgh aren't getting it done with a lineup of superstars yet they're in the thick of the playoff race.
Team looks pretty good next year:
1B? - Maybe Salty
2B - Pedroia
SS - Ciriaco
3B - Middlebrooks
C - Lavarnway
LF - Ross
CF - Ellsbury
RF - Sweeney
DH - Ortiz
Bench - Kalish, Iglesias, Nava
Starters: Lester, Buchholz, Dubront, Morales, Idiot Lackey maybe
Pen: Bailey, Aceves, Padilla, etc etc.
It would be nice if a new pitching coach could straighten Bard out. I would also like a decent bat at 1B although I'm not sure who's out there. Otherwise take this team and run with it. Aside from Lackey there's no high priced hired gun on the team. Sign Ellsbury back as he's a core guy (him, Ortiz, Pedroia, Lester) now that they have huge bucks lying around and really no high priced free agent targets out there.
I would also look for some sort of deal involving Salty, Iglesias, and Aviles for some starting pitching. Servicable catchers are a rare commodity nowadays and the team has 3 shortstops so somebody has to go. Ciriaco has played his way into the starting line up.
