Sunday 1/3/10 Scores - Who needs stinkin' football!!

Re: Sunday 1/3/10 Scores - Who needs stinkin' football!!

Just back from the CC...hope the Elmira bus driver knows how to drive through some slick roads.

Tuttle played great. Easily could have been 5 goals for the Lakers tonight if not for him.

Musselwhite is fast.

Rodrigues did miss a wide open net on the PP right before Darcy's goal. I think I could have even hit it in, and I don't even skate!

KGT played well. Controlled the rebounds and made the nice save early in the game on the breakaway.

Officiating...questionable as usual.

Selleck...a nice shiner on his left eye:cool:

Did I mention Musselwhite is fast?

Re: Sunday 1/3/10 Scores - Who needs stinkin' football!!

Elmira has done well against Plattsburgh FOREVER on their home ice :( The recent 0 for 3 is bad enough, but nothing was more frustrating to Plattsburgh fans than the days when the teams met twice a season and the Cardinals ALWAYS lost at the Domes (well, 9 straight seasons, to be precise). Should be a fun one, in any case...it'll be interesting to see how Plattsburgh performs in their rematch with Norwich - could be as good a barometer as any.

They did win one of the most memorable games of the rivalry though on Elmira's home ice in the infamous trophy left on the ice game in 1992 or 1994 I believe?

Plattsburgh jumped ship to the SUNYAC from the ECAC West IIRC and were denied hosting rights even though they should have and it was given to Elmira instead. Plattsburgh ended up winning the tournament and left the championship trophy on the ice.

I believe it was earlier than that.

Not exactly. The SUNYAC was already established when it came to hockey (SUNYAC championships and even playoffs were held while SUNY teams also still competed for ECAC West titles and in their playoffs), and by the by-laws of the SUNYAC, all the SUNY teams had to play in the SUNYAC. The issue was whether they would also continue to play in the ECAC West.

I don't know the exact order of events, but by the tournament you are talking about, I think it was a foregone conclusion that the SUNY teams would only concentrate on the SUNYAC, and no longer participate in the ECAC West.

Plattsburgh was the higher seed that year, but the ECAC West tournament was given to Elmira under the excuse that it was easier for three of the teams to travel to Elmira than up to Plattsburgh. However, the SUNY people felt the decision was made because of the politics going on between the SUNYAC and the ECAC West.

Plattsburgh won the tournament, took the trophy, promptly placed it at center ice, and skated to the locker room. Any hopes of the SUNY teams remaining in the ECAC West were dashed forever by the events of that weekend from naming the hosting site to dissing the trophy.

Re: Sunday 1/3/10 Scores - Who needs stinkin' football!!

I believe it was earlier than that.

From the PressRepublican Article that Thursday before the playoffs:
ANGRY CARDINALS EMBARK TO ELMIRA
PLATTSBURGH - How is this for adding insult to injury, salting
the tailfeathers of the Plattsburgh State hockey Cardinals?
The ECAC West tournament championship trophies arrived in
Plattsburgh Thursday, a day after the Eastern College Athletic Conference
had snubbed the top-seeded Cardinals in selecting No. 2 seed
Elmira as the host site for this weekend's semifinal and championship
rounds. The ECAC hardware is now in the possession of Plattsburgh
State Director of Athletics Peter Luguri, who will transport
the spoils to Elmira today.
The ECACs misdirection play was just one more rub on Plattsburgh
State hockey. The Cardinals and their fans could almost see
the humor in the ECAC's error if not for the anger being directed at
the tournament committee.
The team was still in a sour mood Thursday afternoon, when it
boarded the bus for the eight-hour trip to Elmira. But some players
were looking to make the best of the situation.
I think we can turn this into a positive thing," Captain Jim
Duran said. "Everyone was very negative until last night's meeting.
Most (of the players) didn't want to go, but we talked it over and
thought about it. We decided we'd better go because it wouldn't look
good; it would be a poor reflection on the team. Now we're going
down there to make the best of it."
Plattsburgh, 25-2-2, will take on Fredonia State, 17-10-1, today at
4:30 p.m. at the Murray Athletic Center. Elmira, 21-7, will play Mercyhurst,
17-12, in the other semifinal. The championship game will
be played Saturday night.
The Cardinals, who clinched an NCAA tournament berth last
weekend by winning the State University of New York Athletic Conference
championship, may have been ripe for an upset in a meaningless
ECAC tourney. But the ECAC's latest move no doubt gives
Plattsburgh plenty of incentive to put on a good show this weekend.
"You never know," uttered a hoarse Head Coach Bob Emery.
"We'll just have to wait and see."
However, there was no doubt in Duran's mind"
"I think it will be a big motivational factor. It just shows that Plattsburgh
is always the team they pick on. We're sort of the outcasts.
But now we have the incentive to show 'em were better than that
and that we deserve better," the Cards captain said.
The Cardinals' chief concerns are injuries and overzealous play.
Any hurts or game suspensions will carry over to NCAA play next
week.
"We've got to be careful; we have to come out of there with no injuries,"
Duran continued. You worry too, about the long trip and people
not getting enough sleep."
Plattsburgh and Fredonia are hardly strangers. They have met
three times this season and as recent as last Saturday when the
Cardinals doubled up the Devils, 8-4, to win the conference championship.
.
Plattsburgh didn't have nearly as easy a time with Fredonia last
month in the regular season. The Cardinals had to settle for a 3-3
standoff as they ran into a rock in all-conference goaltender Paul
Kwiatkowski. Plattsburgh got to the Devils keeper early last Saturday,
but Kwiatkowski & Company won't have to contend with 3,513
vocal Plattsburgh partisans this afternoon.
Notes: Plattsburgh State, providing the Cardinals defeat Fredonia,
will be sending two spectator buses to the championship game on
Saturday. Tickets are on sale now at the college center desk. The cost
is $20 for PSUC students and $37 for all others. The money will be
refunded if Plattsburgh does not win tonight. Tickets and seats are
guaranteed. They are $3 for students and $5 for all others.

Another article:

PLATTSBURGH — Citing economic
concerns, the Eastern
Collegiate Athletic Conference
named Elmira College the host
team for this weekend's ECAC
West ice-hockey championship.
The decision means that Plattsburgh
State, the top seed in the
tournament and second-ranked
team in Division III, will be on
the road this weekend (March 6
and 7). The Cardinals (25*2-2),
State University of New York
Athletic Conference champions,
play Predonia State (17-10-1) in
one semifinal (4:30 p.m. start).
Mercyhurst College of Erie, Pa.,
(17-12) plays meets Elmira (21-7)
in the nightcap.
According to the ECAC East-
West selection committee, which
made the decision Wednesday
morning, the move was made to
cut down on travel costs and lost
Page 14
class time by players from the
participating teams.
Merqyhurst is on break this
week while the other three
schools are in session.
ECAC Commisioner Clayton
Chapman said the overriding factor
in the committee's decision,
^though, -was money. Assistant
commisioner John Garner said
the 1991 ECAC East tournament,
hosted by Middlebury
College, lost a considerable
amount of money.
(Middlebury, though, is
hosting the East event again this
year. Garner said with nearby
Norwich University involved, the
costs there would be greatly
reduced. The University of Connecticut
is the top seed in the
East but the Huskies lack adequate
playing and locker room
facilities.)
Two of the teams in the West
tournament (Fredonia and Mercyhurst)
are from far-flung
regions/' Chapman said. "It
couldn't have worked out to be
any farther if we hand-picked the
teams."
Chapman said that if the
makeup of the field was different,
Plattsburgh probably
would have hosted the event. "If
Oswego and Geneseo had (made
the semifinals), the travel would
have been considerably less."
Because of an NCAA-mandated
schedule reduction (from
28 to 26) and the automatic bid
its conference winner receives to
the Division III playoffs, the
SUNYAC voted in November not
to partipate in future ECAC ice-
The ECAC pays teams per
diem expenses for their travel to
postseason play.
"The distance dictated that we
make this move," Chapman said.
'That, along with the missed
class time, was the main reason.
We didn't want to be put in a
position where we were fostering
that (missed class time.)"
Chapman said the financial
success Plattsburgh has had —
Plattsburgh drew more than
7,000 fans for last weekend's
SUNYAC championships —
entered into the committee's
decision but the other factors
outweighed the college's ability to
draw a large gate.
The move did not sit well with
Plattsburgh State President
Charles Warren.
**We are very concerned with
the committee's decision," Warren
said. "We voiced our concern
to them in a follow-up letter.
•Apparently it did not change
their minds."

Re: Sunday 1/3/10 Scores - Who needs stinkin' football!!

Elmira drew just as big if not bigger crowds than Plattsburgh back then so the gate argument doesnt work for Plattsburgh.

They did get screwed though but atleast the ECAC did have a back door reason for shipping the playoffs to Elmira. I thought they just gave it to Elmira because Plattsburgh was leaving.

Re: Sunday 1/3/10 Scores - Who needs stinkin' football!!

PLATTSBURGH - The decision to allow Elmira College to host the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference West Ice Hockey Championships went
over like a lead zeppelin in Plattsburgh. Pittsburgh State coach Bob
Emery first heard of the decision shortly alter 11 a.m.

"I couldtrt believe it," a weary Emery said late Wednesday evening. The kids worked so hard for this. After having their season ended early last year (by
NCAA sanctions), they came to camp so eager to work. Guys were here (at the fieldhouse) at five and six in the morning running."

Emery thought a 23-2-2 regular season record (now 25-2-2) and a first-place finish in the ECAC West standings would be enough to secure the Cards
home ice advantage through the postseason.
"One of our season goals was to make up for what we missed out on last year," Emery said. To see (home ice) take away from us is disgraceful."

As soon as Emery heard the decision, he called Athletic Director Peter Luguri to see if anything could be done.

"Peter did everything possible," Emery said. "A lot was done between 11:30 and 4:30 (when the last Plattsburgh appeal was exhausted). None of it (the outcome) was in favor of Plattsburgh."

For much of the day, rumors swirled around the college that the team would not participate this weekend.

"At first, some of the players didn't want to go," Emery said. The seniors said that they had playoffs taken away from them twice before (as freshmen and
juniors), and they did not want to miss out again." —

Luguri, in a strongly-worded statement, blasted the ECAC decision.

"We believe the ECAC Ice Hockey Championship Committee's decision to award this weekend's conference championship tournament to the second seeded team is without precedent. Instead of hosting the tournament,
we've been told our team has to travel the greatestdistance of any of the competing institutions. We consider the decision an outrage and an insult
to a team and coaching staff that has worked hard all year to earn home ice in the playoffs. We're terribly disappointed for them, naturally, but we also feel that our loyal fans have been treated rudely."

One of the arguments against hosting the event in Plattsburgh was that the other schools (Fredonia, Mercyhurst and Elmira) would miss an inordinate
amount of class time. To that Luguri said:

"Mercyhurst, which would have the greatest distance to travel from its Erie, Pennsylvania campus, is on break and will continue on break through the
jtravel to Plattsburgh from Erie or Elmira is hardly a new experience
for the rest of the tourney field. All three teams have played here at least once in each of the past three years. Further, the site selection had to come as a shock to at least Mercyhurst and Fredonia. Both had made lodging
arrangements locally (before) the news about the committee's decision."

From Emery's perspective, the announcement has cast a dark cloud over what has been a most successful season.

"It's not fair to the kids," Emery said. The reason (the ECAC) gave was ridiculous. They cave no good reason. They don't have an answer.
"We had something handed to us on a silver platter and then
taken away from us."

DEFIANT CARDS ICE ECAC TITLE

PINE VALLEY - The Plattsburgh State Cardinals wrote the final chapter of their ECAC ice hockey history Saturday night with their mmal dramatic flair.
The Cardinals, urged on by 500-plus fans who made the six hour trip to Elmira, stormed back from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Mercyhurst 6-3 in the final
of the Athletic Conference West tournament.
Freshman Steve Moore earned Most Valuable Player honors with three goals, including a penalty-shot score at 18:36 of the second period that put Pittsburgh ahead to stay.

The Cardinals, who will leave the ECAC hockey league after this season, won the Eastern Conference Athletic West title for a fourth time and first since 1987. Team Captain Jim Duran accepted the championship plaque from tournament officials, but left it at center ice in protest of the ECACs decision to award the final four to Elmira over topseeded Plattsburgh.

"I talked to a couple of guys before the end of the game and at first we weren't going to accept it all" Duran said. "But toward the end I decided to show a little class by accepting it. Then I told them they could take the trophy and keep it"

"It was strictly the players decision. They won it; it was up to them what to do with it," Head Coach Bob Emery said.

Re: Sunday 1/3/10 Scores - Who needs stinkin' football!!

What year was this ECAC West tourney you guys wrote about?

1992, the same year that the Mike MacNamara hit happened....I always thought it was later because I forgot we played Mercyhurst in the finals of the ECAC's and not Elmira....it was also the year Plattsburgh won the National Championship...

Re: Sunday 1/3/10 Scores - Who needs stinkin' football!!

It was 1992, the year Plattsburgh went 32-2-2 and won the NCAA's. It was also the same year IIRC that Elmira was sent to Plattsburgh for the NCAA Quarters in an ironic turn of events. Many remember that as the Mike McNamera series.

And Derek, where in that article was anyone from Plattsburgh arguing about gate attendance? It was the ECAC commish who brought it up about a strong reason to have Plattsburgh host.

Re: Sunday 1/3/10 Scores - Who needs stinkin' football!!

Remy, after reading your articles, I have one question... since when have they played DIII hockey in Pittsburgh?

Re: Sunday 1/3/10 Scores - Who needs stinkin' football!!

Like I said, that was the "official" excuse. But many SUNY schools felt it was the ECAC West getting back at them for deciding not to participate in future ECAC West tournaments.

Perception is reality, and there was a lot of bad blood over that decision.

Remy, thanks for digging those articles out of the "achives." But next time, post them with DATES. ;)

I still believe it was earlier than 1992... Oh, how time passes...

BTW, what Mike MacNamara hit are you talking about? Not the one that stopped the Elmira player's heart? That I know was later. Otherwise, I'm going insane.

1992 it was. I remember it well. We (Oswego) lost in the first round of the ECAC's that year to Mercyhurst 8-2.:(

Your going insane...that was March 14th of 1992...after 4 days in a coma Mike woke up to watch and cheer Plattsburgh as they won the National Title against UWSP from his hospital bed at CVPH. I don't think it was in an article, but I know he was all decked out in Plattsburgh stuff when the game was on. (Broadcasted live on Channel 5 - Bill Beany actually did the color for the game). Trust me, thats a game/incident I will NEVER forget...almost as much as the 3am completion of the Rescue 911 taping the year later..that was a long night.

The dates of the ECAC West Tourney was March 6th and 7th of 1992..the articles came out March 4th-6th....with the exception obviously of the trophey article which came out March 8th.

Although the Cardinals beat his Elmira team, McNamara will be rooting for them this weekend, his father said.

"He's pulling for Plattsburg because they are in the same league (ECAC East)"

McNamara, who had earlier sent a personal note to Steve Ashe, the Pittsburgh State player whose hit sent him to the ice, expressed no regrets over the episode.

"I think hockey is an aggressive sport," he said. "The hit was clean and everything. I think that's how hockey should be played." Mike said

“My family and I would like to thank Plattsburgh, Elmira and the surrounding communities for their prayers and cards and letters of concerned kindness during my recent injury. A very special thanks to Elmira College, Plattsburgh State and the Comfort Inn. I am forever grateful to the medical team at the arena, the Plattsburgh Fire Department Rescue Squad and the doctors, nurses and staff at CVPH for their excellent care. Now that I am on my way to a full recovery, I intend to rest at home for a while before starting school again on April 21. I do not intend to engage in any contact sport for six to eight months. This summer, I intend to play golf, fish and ei\joy the outdoors. I also will be able to catch up on my past semester's courses. Thank you. God bless all who helped and cared about my family.”

Taking a moment to compose himself, Mr. McNamara said:

"Our family would like to thank everyone involved with saving Mikes life and getting him on to the road to recovery” “We would also like to thank the men, women and children of Plattsburgh and the surrounding community who have prayed and cared and have had Michael in their thoughts. Our prayers were answered. God Bless you."

According to this article (page 3 - "Oliphant Comes to the Rescue"), Remy is right. I just spoke with my father about this... I was at the game, but I wasn't even 1 year old yet, so I obviously don't remember it.

This (page 4 - "A happy ending to a sad tale") is about the community's reaction to the event, and McNamara's recovery.
