Stump the USCHO Movie Buff(Part III)

Re: Stump the USCHO Movie Buff(Part III)

I'm totally lost on this one-never was too big on foreign films (especially pre color):(
(tcbg again)

Another hint: a scene from an unofficial remake of this film was featured in the second film of a time-travelling trilogy which then inspired a scene in the third film.

Hint 3 (if the one above doesn't help at all): An official remake was released in 1996, starring Bruce Willis.

What in the world is an "unofficial remake?" No offense, but this is the least helpful most complicated hint I've ever seen on this thread.

IMDB lists Bruce Willis as doing Beavis and Butthead Do America, Last Man Standing, and some animated deal call Bruno the Kid in 1996. While not under the 96 banner, but likely from the same time would be the Fifth Element and Twelve Monkeys.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say for certain that its not from Do America..........

Re: Stump the USCHO Movie Buff(Part III)

Is this a Japanese film? We seem to remake Kurosawa movies all the time. (Magnificent 7, The Outrage) Even if it is, I still won't know it. This is the hardest quote we have had-and perhaps the most obscure-and I should know since I have posted some real doozies:)

Production company did not acquire remake rights, resulting in a lawsuit and delaying the film's US release until 1967 (three years after its Italian release).

Yes, it is one of those three 1996 Bruce Willis movies.

Japanese, and, in fact, Kurosawa. He had a huge influence on the Western genre, not just through remakes. The film in question inspired not just the "unofficial remake", but two more films that comprise what is probably the most famous trilogy in the genre, and gave a certain young "Rowdy" actor is first big break (and one of his most iconic characters, though no one would be able to tell you his name).

The third movie of said Western trilogy featured a theme song that would become famous, and used by Metallica at the start of all of their concerts.

Lots of hints in there, though some are more subtle than others. I don't like to make things easy. :)

Yojimbo?

Re: Stump the USCHO Movie Buff(Part III)

That is a ton of hints:eek: I didn't know most of that, but I know Last Man Standing is a remake of... Yojimbo.

Isn't Mifune's character's name Sanjuro? I know that's the title of one of the other movies, and I always thought that was his name, but I don't know why. I haven't watched them in ages.

Anyway. A quote.

Ding! Ding! Ding!

That is the name he gives (Kuwabatake Sanjuro), but it means "Mulberry Field thirty-year-old/thirtysomething" and is merely a reference to the fields he was gazing at in the opening scene, and his approximate age. For all intents and purposes that is his character's name, as it is how we (and the other characters) refer to him, but in actuality, he never gives his real name (it's similar to the way people refer to Ed Norton's "Fight Club" character as "Jack", though we never learn his real name).

Sergio Leone's "A Fistful of Dollars" is the "unofficial remake", with Clint Eastwood (who was starring as Rowdy Yates on Rawhide at the time) as the man with no name. He would reprise the role in "For a Few Dollars More" and "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly", for which Ennio Morricone wrote "The Ecstasy of Gold", probably the most famous Western theme (and used by Metallica to open each of their live shows).

The time-travelling trilogy I referenced was, in fact, Back to the Future. In Part 2, when Marty and Doc return to the alternate 1985, Marty sees rich Biff watching the end of "A Fistful of Dollars" (Eastwood using the metal plate as body armor); Marty uses the same trick near the end of Part 3 in his gunfight with Buford Tannen.

I think that resolves all of my hints. :)

Re: Stump the USCHO Movie Buff(Part III)

I'm confident no one will ever accuse me of "obscure" references again.:)
