Student section and profanity in your school's arena

Re: Student section and profanity in your school's arena

SCSU has the spelling chants (sometimes) that are a little risque, but only has one with profanity (depending on your definition).

When the opposing team takes a penalty, the student section will wag their fingers back and forth yelling "Cheater! Cheater! Cheater!" until he gets to the box, and then as he gets in they'll all yell, "Sit down Bi***!"

The only other time they'll swear in a chant is Gopher games. Then we break out "******* the Gophers!" before warmups. And I've heard that done once or twice with the Badgers too, but not for a while.

Re: Student section and profanity in your school's arena

They use to monitor it at SCSU and they chased all the students away. Since then they keep shrinking the student section because fewer students want to go. Now all they have is a bunch of students who sit on there hands and never say anything.

I remember when we used to be cool.

Re: Student section and profanity in your school's arena

I had a security guard at the DECC tell me I couldn't wear a UND flag as a cape because flags weren't allowed. Then the UMD students ran around the arena with a flag after they scored. Neat.

I had a similar experience at UMD. We got tired of the Bulldog fans running around the rink and kicking us as they ambled through the concourse, so we stuck our legs out so they couldn't pass. Apparently that's a fire hazard, but the 20 fat kids huffing and puffing past us wasn't. We got back at them a couple years later by getting their own mascot thrown out of the DECC. :D

Remember the first time we went to Tech and the security guards tried to tell the Puckheads to stop cheering....for Tech. :D

That was hilarious.

Re: Student section and profanity in your school's arena

We've been specifically asked not to do so at Tate Rink, and threatened with expulsion from the base for doing so. Actually, at the SLU game, we were asked not to do so. There's always one dingbat that screws it up though. I've started to break out of the habit of it, and usually sing along. My friends give me weird looks when singing O Canada, but thankfully for my own sanity it's in English, and I'm not singing the French version. Besides, I only know the first and last line.

That explains the Army thing... I'm surprised that the folks at Tate Rink even knew you did such a thing. I really don't like it at all even though I did it as a student at CCT, I've grown older and a little wiser. Profanity in general wouldn't really go well at Tate because it's really a family atmosphere pretty much everywhere in the arena.

One thing I do like that our band does is sing O Canada when we're at a road game where it's not played. Over half of our players are Canadian, so it's a nice thing to do. They have also been known to learn the national anthems of other international players (particularly Finland with our ties there) and play those anthems for their Senior Night.

Army is definitely well aware; after all, we used to be travel partners. At HFH when I'm in my old seats in section 33 (I still have a big enough mouth to warrant being right behind the penalty box) I will yell "Red", but at visiting places I won't, except for maybe Messa, if I can find a bail buddy, or Cheel, if one of our bruiser defensemen is sitting out for the night. :D

RPI's band doesn't know the other national anthems, though last year during senior night (or the night before) we played over the PA system the Russian anthem for Uryadov.

Re: Student section and profanity in your school's arena

This is such a great timewaster at work. To run thru HE the way someone did for ECAC,

BC = combo day care & retirement center. No swearing.
BU = the F em up, BC sucks can be heard 900x a game, otherwise clean-mouthed [albeit very annoying] student section & very classy alum/casual fans in the middle sections
NU = honestly their vulgarity isn't that bad. they are BRUTALLY mean and politically incorrect, but usually not vulgar. and they're very spirited.
UNH & Maine = some weird older fans but I never hear vulgarity other than 'sucks'. lots of classy people at both places.
Merrimack = has no fans
Providence = pretty bad when their students are there. their regular fans are like BC fans. usually BC @ PC is 60% BC fans anyway.
Lowell= I haven't been there in three years, it was really quiet and mostly BC fans when I was there. Lots of parents with kids and such.
Vermont = the worst. F bombs raining down from alums and average people in the non-student sections. Every chant having a different swear word in it from the student section. I've never been to UMass but I doubt it could be that much worse.

Uhhhhh have you been to Lawlor Arena this year? Obviously not, it is loud, lots of student turnout as well as local fans. Regularly get around 3000 people in attendance (which is capactiy...in a small rank...in very tight quarters)...which makes for a much harder place to play than Cavernous conte being half filled by a bunch of grandparents golf clapping whenever they score.

Re: Student section and profanity in your school's arena

Lowell is starting to see heavy attendance from students now that they allow them in for free. Combine that with the selling of alcohol in the arena, and all the new students like to chant bullsh*t at the most obvious penalty against Lowell. You also have the freshman who like to drop f bombs at opposing fans. It's a work in progress.

Unfortunately the attempts by the standing student section (handing out cheer fliers) hasn't worn off on the freshmen who don't realize that there are kids about 50 feet away from them. Now the occasional bulls*** at penalties is alright, especially if it just looks like the classic give BU/BC a PP. When they started dropping them against UNH when we were leading and it was an obvious penalty, yeah thats overkill.

Overall I like the new feel at Tsongas and we just need to keep working on educating the new students who are interested in the game.

Also it so horrible that the DECC staff gives opposing fans a hard time but not home fans! ;):D

I also find it hilarious. It means the Bullpups are losing and that's always a plus.

Freudian Slip? :D

Re: Student section and profanity in your school's arena

At Boston College, despite the fact that they scan tickets and actually count the number of people that go to the games (rather than tickets sold) and that BC annually is top 2 in attendance in the league, no one goes to BC games. At least that's what I heard on the interwebs (therefore, it must be true!).

So basically, unless those empty seats are swearing, the "fan" behavior is quite good!

This guy... "GET'S IT!"

Good job buddy. Keep up the good work.

which makes for a much harder place to play than Cavernous conte being half filled

Well, its harder to play at Lawler, but its not because of the noise... its because in a premiere D1 league, players are accustomed to playing in a building with certain standards, of which Lawler falls WELL WELL short of...

Huh? Yes, I've been to JV Rink this year for BC's game at Merrimack... which was a huge win for the 'Mack... probably one of their biggest in recent years. And, uh, yeah... no. I was unaware that there even was a student section until I saw some of them leaving at the end of the game. At least 50% of the people at the game were BC fans, and the rest were mostly unaffiliated parents who just brought their kids as something to do and had no connection with either team.

I actually said to my friend during that drip that Lawler feels exactly like Conte, you can hear a pin drop the whole game, then BC scores and there's polite applause, then the game ends and people file out quickly and in an orderly fashion.

MC vs Holy Cross - 1,808
MC vs. Army - 1,272
MC vs. Uconn -1,689
MC vs. BC - 2,660
MC vs. BU - 2,990 (sellout)

That is "regularly" "around" "3000"?

It's early in the year, perhaps you meant last year.

MC average attendance in 2008-09 = 1,724

Math FAIL

Re: Student section and profanity in your school's arena

Are you ****ing nuts? No, really, that's a serious question. Because I **** near fell out of my chair when I read this.

The sieve chant is poor sportsmanship? Holy ****. Do you politely clap when the opposing team scores?

Edit: I probably should have noted that this post was profanity-fortified in the theme of the thread.

I stand by my view. I've played the sport from a young age and was taught to respect opponents even while trying to kick the crap out of them on the ice and on the scoreboard. The "sieve" chants and the school's complicity in them (i.e., on the electronic ad banner) just shows the character of Badger fans and the hockey program.

But maybe I'm just ol' skool...what do i know?...I mean I don't condone coaches assaulting their players and keeping their jobs either;)

I agree with you to the extent that the video board should not condone ridiculing the opponents but to say that the fans shouldn't? I can't really buy into that. Agree to disagree.

They would also play the rouser over the loudspeaker once the band was gone, and it was actually over the word "HUSKIES," though you are right about the first part of the change. My favorite part of that was about two years went by where they didn't play the rouser at games, then they randomly broke it out at one game, I guess hoping the people who did that chant were gone, but they were quite mistaken. I don't think I've heard the full version at a hockey game in at least five years. :)
