Student section and profanity in your school's arena

Re: Student section and profanity in your school's arena

I call it gamesmanship. I like that the Kohl Center tries to create a home ice advantage by singling out the goalie. Welcome to the real world where people get criticized and thrown under the bus.

I was at both the Gopher-Badger games this year, and I thought it was pretty lame that the UW students called the Gopher goalie a sieve after every save he made... I understand and love calling goaltenders sieves when your team scores a goal, but when the opposing goalie makes 45 saves and you call him a sieve after every single one, the "sieve" thing kinda loses its sting.

My $.02

FYP. If you disagree, then I decree that you be shot out of a cannon for your anti-Phil position.

Either Phil is grandfathered in, or he's much more careful about the fine print in the rules than visiting fans have ever been. In either case, don't hate the player- hate the freakin obnoxious security measures at the Kohl Center.
The security staff seems to have a different answer every time we ask. Sometimes they say he's grandfathered in, sometimes they say he has a written exemption, most times they just ignore us. I believe someone (most likely MEg) tried to go through the system and get an exemption like Phil has, and they just sent her in a bureaucratic circle and eventually ended up ignoring her.

My favorite Kohl Center security incident was when they posted a guard next to MEg because she kept putting signs on the glass instead of just holding them. What a huge threat to security

Nice. We had a incident at Miami where a security guard was sent to tell us we weren't allowed to tape our sign up. When we showed him it was secured by using straws as ties he had to go back to his boss before telling us that also wasn't allowed.

Re: Student section and profanity in your school's arena

I had a security guard at the DECC tell me I couldn't wear a UND flag as a cape because flags weren't allowed. Then the UMD students ran around the arena with a flag after they scored. Neat.

Re: Student section and profanity in your school's arena

We had the Quest-apo (UNO) take away a cowbell "no noisemakers" on the same night they were handing out jugs for people to put coins in and use as noisemakers.

Wow, that sounds a lot like the time the Ralph confiscated our flag and did absolutely nothing when we complained about the UND fan with a flag right below us.

I was actually pretty pleased with the DECC security this weekend. When they came to complain about our cowbells, they actually honored our request for them to get the drummer in the band to stop playing too.

That is fantastic.

But that was because you suck. I on the other hand rule, so the DECC security guard was completely without merit.

Or how about when I got kicked out of the Tech student section because people couldn't see because I was standing. They could see around Kolbus who was standing right next to me though.

That's just like the time DU confiscated my plastic megaphone (that I was using to cleanly encourage the team) that I had actually bought from DU in the arena shop that very night. When confronted with the obvious issue, the staff had no choice but to return it to me, but they cautioned me not to use it because people around me were "being disturbed."

Complain about the uptight security at the Kohl Center and the jokers in the UW Athletic Department administration all you want. No Badger will disagree with you.

Remember the first time we went to Tech and the security guards tried to tell the Puckheads to stop cheering....for Tech. :D

I can see this...if fact, I'm surprised the NCAA didn't come down themselves to do it calling your cheers of "Let's Go DU/Pios" and "Nice Hustle [insert DU player name here]" hostile and abusive.

Arena security should be fair...if you'll let the home fans do it, let the visiting fans do it. Except a goal lap at tDECC...that has the potential to cause a brawl. :)

Re: Student section and profanity in your school's arena

Hi all,

I am just curious, does the student section in your university extensively use chants containing profanity? Has administration ever done anything drastic about that? Were their measures successful in reducing vulgarity? Did it negatively affect the arena atmosphere?

I know about the security folks that supposedly throw some people out at the Agganis arena (I believe BU people affectionately refer to them as "Agganazis"). Having been there, I don't think their atmosphere suffers from it though. However, I don't know how Walter Brown used to be like. I also didn't really hear BU students swear, except in the notorious "eat/rough/**** 'em up" chant.

I've heard that at Michigan administration throws some students out on regular basis when the do the "C'ya" chant, but, having never been there, don't know that for certain. I also heard that they harshly police the Denver student section, which reportedly resulted in library-like atmosphere -- however, again, that's hearsay and I think it was from someone not particularly fond of Denver. I've never been to Denver either.

At Dartmouth we had an occasional problem with our coach cussing the refs out, but the students don't swear. :D

At UMass student section does use profanity extensively. There was a "Keep it clean" campaign at the end of last year (after numerous f-bombs were dropped from the student section on BC) but that died down. I didn't see anyone get kicked out during the "Keep it clean" campaign and I don't think it made any difference on the amount of swearing...

Anyway, any thoughts/info is appreciated.

At RPI, it depends. S**ks is used in about every cheer imaginable involving the other team. Obviously Bull-**** is used for a bad penalty, and that same 4-letter is used in a chant when we play Brown. It's a statement about "#2", and then its converse. It is, IMO, the cause of why CSTV will never do a game at Houston Field House again, and by extension, RPI's former TV curse. Only one other cheer actually audible involves the refs and 7-letter B.

Aside from CSTV, we haven't had any issues with it, mostly because it doesn't happen all THAT often. The administration couldn't possibly do anything about it, because the administration doesn't own our team.

Re: Student section and profanity in your school's arena

At ND, "sucks" appears in multiple places, although the band is not allowed to do it themselves ("you suck" by us turns into "you're bad" by them). i.e....
Talking hands cheer... "Go Irish, beat (opponent mascot), suck it (opponent mascot), go Irish go!" (I typically omit the "suck it" part.)
After a goal... "(goalie name 5x), you suck!, it's all your fault! (5x), loser!"
After an opposing penalty expires... "Who cares, they still suck! Especially *that guy*! (pointing to the guy who just got out)"

Otherwise, profanity is nearly nonexistent. It's never been part of the culture, so I think it would be fairly easy for the ushers to stamp out if it starts to occur.

Re: Student section and profanity in your school's arena

Well the worst fan of all in Hockey East is that Rain Man UMASS fan who sat behind me a month ago, so let's get that out of the way.

PC's student section used to have a reputation for being a bunch of drunken idiots who would start fights with people. Now we don't exist. This is what happens when your team starts to suck. Sigh.

You were the UND of the East Coast! Congrats, that's quite the badge of honor.

Given the brand of beer - a step above paint thinner - we were drinking in the late 90's, a smaller, quieter Wisconsin with less success and more goonery would be a better analogy.

Re: Student section and profanity in your school's arena

They use to monitor it at SCSU and they chased all the students away. Since then they keep shrinking the student section because fewer students want to go. Now all they have is a bunch of students who sit on there hands and never say anything.

True U guess, at the tUMD game none of the kiddies knew any chants..they could barely sieve..

Re: Student section and profanity in your school's arena

My two favorite chants toward the refs are still pretty clean. :)

1. Hey Ref , are you the " BUS DRIVER " :p

2. Nuts and bolts , nuts and bolts , we got " SCREWED. "

Re: Student section and profanity in your school's arena

NU's crowds have increased since the team came out of the basement and the downsizing of capacity helps to make the place more full, but they are inching closer to UMass/UVM territory with the numbers of drunk fools who don't follow the sport at all. (The drunk kids who made fun of my friend for apparently being a fool because of his "Who is house is this?" sign sum that up pretty well.) But at least there is a core of those usually know what's going on there.

"Is Us House!":D

But yea, there are more and more drunk a-holes, but most of them come out for the "cross town rival" kind of games. On the flip side, I thought the "F$@# YOU N-U" chant at last years Beanpot was VERY classy of the BU faithful.:p

"5.... 5 year.... 5 year PROGRAAMMMMM!!!"
