Student section and profanity in your school's arena

Re: Student section and profanity in your school's arena

Ferris State used to be known to have one of the worst (Best) Student sections in the CCHA behind Yost (Michigan) until the last three years. Ferris State became real bad.

Since then, students started wearing ski masks, sat down during a complete period in sign of protest, and all in all, the worst one out there - stop going to the game.

The Ferris State Athletic Department is not the bandits, it's the rink manager who kicks the students out and enforces the law. Student's have to be two feet away from the glass, no banging on the glass, no swearing, no nothing.

So, if I were any administrators and they were reading these - I would not crack down on students. They are in college life, what do you expect from a college atmosphere? The rosemary? In Big Rapids, there is a bigger student base than there is a community base. Why crack down on students for a community who doesn't even go to the games?

Re: Student section and profanity in your school's arena

At RPI, it depends. S**ks is used in about every cheer imaginable involving the other team.

I received the following angry email from someone who was watching RPI's B2 stream on October 31st when we played Army:

As a parent of an Army player, I can’t believe the poor sportsmanship shown by the crowd at introduction of the Army team. I have never heard a crowd tell the other team “you suck” at the beginning of a game. What makes it even more unbelievable is that it is military appreciation night. What’s wrong with your fans?

It was business as usual at the Field House, though the argument isn't completely unfounded (especially given the frequency at which RPI fans announce that the opposing players suck).

Re: Student section and profanity in your school's arena

Considering all that, I'm still trying to figure out who continues to approve the use of the Jet song "Cold Hard *****," which they don't edit (though USCHO apparently does), as one of the songs played when the team comes on the ice.
Jet is a great band!
My favorite part about that was that they took away a sign that said "Fix the Huskies" but let you keep that one. Idiots!:D

This sign ****ed some people off, but the school didn't take it away or anything..

Do I need to make another editorial to the Poly? This is something we do normally. Outside of HFH, yes they are our military. Inside when playing hockey, they're a D-I school.

It's been done once. I show no shame in doing it again.

Re: Student section and profanity in your school's arena

I got yelled at by an old lady fan at Conte last year. Me and DeVita were talking too loud.

After we recovered from our shock, we resumed talking in outdoor voices.

Re: Student section and profanity in your school's arena

I had a security guard at the DECC tell me I couldn't wear a UND flag as a cape because flags weren't allowed. Then the UMD students ran around the arena with a flag after they scored. Neat.
They took our pole this weekend, but not last year. They let us keep the flag, though.

Re: Student section and profanity in your school's arena

One thing the UMD students did that I really did not approve of was start singing "Na na na na, hey hey hey, goodbye!" when one of our players leaving the ice for an injury. I fully approve singing it when a player gets kicked out, but its completely out of line to sing it while a player is limping to the locker room.

You would disapprove of the 'Shoot em like a horse' cheer then I suppose.

Re: Student section and profanity in your school's arena

They have been trying to cut down the swearing at MSU (East Lansing). The band will start playing right at the "c-ya b****", or a song will be played on the arena's speakers. The band also stopped playing certain songs that the student section would swear during, for instance the "hockey cheer". And the band now will applaud the refs to try and counteract the "boos" and "you guys suck" from the student section when they skate onto the ice.

As a result, the student section has added swearing to the other, formerly 'clean' cheers, they do 'hockey cheer' without the band, and they add "*******...those...Wolverines" to the end of one cheer instead of saying it at the begining (since the band stopped playing the intro).

Re: Student section and profanity in your school's arena

Last year we solved the problem of the Kohl Center's sign size restrictions (ignore the arrow).

On the flip side, I thought the "F$@# YOU N-U" chant at last years Beanpot was VERY classy of the BU freshmen.:p

"5.... 5 year.... 5 year PROGRAAMMMMM!!!"

fyp. which you reciprocated this year numerous times so were even.

and please, do 5 year again.

Wow, that sounds a lot like the time the Ralph confiscated our flag and did absolutely nothing when we complained about the UND fan with a flag right below us.

Notre Dame wouldn't let us bring in a Ferris flag because it might get in the way of someone behind us. So we made the old guys take away the student section's whiteboard. :D

At Clarkson, the word "sucks" is a relatively common part of the student section language but anything further is generally cut off by the pep band. Oddly enough, one of the worst displays of profanity I've heard was last season when OUR power-less play would start, several students would start chanting "Don't **** up" because of the number of odd-man breaks and SHG's we were allowing.

I don't think there's any stopping the b.s. chant when a perceived bad call is made. Our band used to downplay this buy having two signs with a "boat" and a "ship"... Really, that's what we were saying. :D

Honestly, I think some of the best chants I've heard at Cheel were the ones that may not have been so profane but were definitely filled with innuendo. One of my favorites ... "Around the bowl, down the hole, go Brown go."

As far as the Army thing is concerned, I can see where military parents would be offended. I've got to give the RPI fans credit though, their large crowd that came down to West Point a few years ago didn't yell "Red" during the National Anthem. I'm a season ticket holder to Army and for the most part when other schools come to visit, they are pretty respectful... I wonder what the MP's would do if they weren't.

Re: Student section and profanity in your school's arena

Read it again. I didn't SAY the sieve chant irritated me, its a pretty standard and accepted display of poor sportsmanship

Are you ****ing nuts? No, really, that's a serious question. Because I **** near fell out of my chair when I read this.

The sieve chant is poor sportsmanship? Holy ****. Do you politely clap when the opposing team scores?

Edit: I probably should have noted that this post was profanity-fortified in the theme of the thread.

Could only be better if it were "Out the hole, down the bowl, go Brown go".

And let's get a MTU @ Army game scheduled. We'll bring a big group and see what shenanigans we can pull.

Re: Student section and profanity in your school's arena

We do get complaints occasionally though. Ask F2B&G about the incident with the whiny parent who wrote a letter to the editor about us.

Some woman named Judy Szyzyzkoski (something "-ski", I regrettably cannot keep track of all those Polish spellings), once wrote in to the MTU student newspaper to complain about the Misfits "disrespectful" behavior, in particular their occasional use of fake "newspaper reading" during the announcement of the opposing team's starting lineups (a tradition which stems from many other programs and student sections).

That's one thing, but this little tirade gets better. She went on to imply that their antics encouraged violence against opposing fans, citing an incident in which she claimed that her son was physically assaulted in the parking lot after a game at the MacInnes, during which he had been cheering for NMU. Basically, she insinuated that some of the Misfits must have been responsible for the crime simply because they "Sieve!" the opposing goalie, etc. She made this tenuous claim in spite of the fact that an arrest was never made regarding the case.

I replied the following week with a similar Letter to the Editor in which I made it clear that such cheers and actions have been a traditional part of the college hockey atmosphere for decades, and kindly pointed out that the Misfits are in fact one of the cleaner student sections in the country. I also said that I would be ashamed of any violence which occurred between sports fanbases, expressed a wish that those who attacked her son would eventually be brought to justice, and made it clear that the Misfits would never under any circumstances encourage their members to physically assault an opposing fan. I politely suggested that if she did not enjoy the college hockey atmosphere, perhaps she should consider attending local high school games instead, and allow someone willing to cheer the Huskies on to victory to take her seat.

We never heard from her again. :)

I've long considered it my duty to deal with these silly people, and suggest they take their family to one of the multitude of other local hockey games if they can't deal with a few of the Misfits' slightly dirtier moments (such as the A-N-A-L, S-H-E-E-P, and S-H-A-V-E cheers, the "sex" verse of "No Beer", etc.). None of those cheers use any truly objectionable words or phrases, and the only people who complain about them are inevitably prudish 40+ year-old women. Odds are their 'innocent' kids/grandkids are going to be learning about the real meaning of it all soon enough. :p

I also trust that we have a great ally in head coach Jamie Russell, because I'm sure that during his stint as an assistant at Cornell, he heard plenty of stuff from the Lynah Faithful that would make the average old bat at one of our games faint. :D

Re: Student section and profanity in your school's arena

Yo, Badgers: Is the 'Rumble Ring' cheer with the dudes in hockey mask/bag over the head and hockey stick with the rubber chicken hanging off it still done? It was a staple between Periods 2 and 3 back when I was in school in Madison. It was particularly creepy/cool because the entire crowd - I meen EVERYONE in the Dane County Dive chanted in unison. Wowza.

We've been specifically asked not to do so at Tate Rink, and threatened with expulsion from the base for doing so. Actually, at the SLU game, we were asked not to do so. There's always one dingbat that screws it up though. I've started to break out of the habit of it, and usually sing along. My friends give me weird looks when singing O Canada, but thankfully for my own sanity it's in English, and I'm not singing the French version. Besides, I only know the first and last line.
