Re: Still Complaining About ESPN...

Bob Ley is retiring at the end of the month. I believe he’s the last of the original ESPN crew, including execs or producers.

So I know this is supposed to be a ***** fest about ESPN, but THEIR #1 highlight of the last 40 years was USA over Russia 1980. I'm sure most people on this board will agree.

Sad for some posters, #2 was "The BAND is on the field". Which we all know what that means.

I can roll with that. I would put Buster Douglas over Tyson in the top 5, too.

Wow, a year and a half of no complaining about ESPN? That must be a record.

But watching the March Madness coverage- the only thing I can think of- what casino does Disney own???

So much hype about brackets and all, shows specific about one person's bracket to another. And while brackets are fun and all- a huge amount are for pools and betting. Add this to the new "daily wager" show that adds to the constant barrage of fantasy sports.... ESPN/Disney is clearly making money on sports betting.

There's no doubt that in the last year or two sports have really gone all in on betting. Obviously in the short term it provides an extra revenue stream but I wonder how it will work out long term. Not to sound like a puritan but it definitely turns me off a little and I'm sure does a lot of other people as well. There is already so much money in sports with the unbelievable increase in commercialism in the last 25 years you have to wonder how badly they really need the money from betting.

Between Betting and Fantasy Sports, most sports coverage is unwatchable. Now get off my lawn so I can go watch the game on mute!

I'm not puritan, but as time has gone on- gambling has just become more and more boring. There's little skill in it- which is why it's called gambling. So all of these talking heads pretending that they know better is a not something I'm interested in listening to. Brackets, fantasy, direct betting- whatever- it's all just not something that is interesting to me.

For sure, it puts me off of watching.

One thing that makes it worse for me- on-line gambling has recently become legal here in Michigan, and we are just flooded with betting ads from every casino that has a license in the state. It's light years better than political ads, but they still suck.

I'm fine with sports gambling being legal in most states these days. Rather the money be legal and taxed rather than going through bookies under the table. I'm just sick of the constant ads, billboards, mailers, etc.

Like casino gambling has been legal in Iowa for 20 years or so. The ads for the casinos aren't any worse than your standard travel/tourism ad. But good lord are the online sportsbook ads annoying as fark. They aren't even trying to appeal to the "fun" aspect of it, it's all about the $$$$.

And yeah, the fact that 95% of all sports commentary these days involves the gambling aspects at least tangentially is just tacky as fark.

I'm not wild about states exploiting the desperation of the poor and the gullibility of the stupid instead of taxing the rich. Though I guess sports betting is basically taxing conservatives so, meh, less money they have for Dump or Falwell.

I guess I don't watch commercials enough to notice. I almost never watch ESPN so maybe that helps...
