Stevenson starts D-III men's hockey, joins ECAC West!

Re: Stevenson starts D-III men's hockey, joins ECAC West!

Saints17's scenario was what Emery told Ducky on BTB a while back that the coaches had already decided on. But it's possible he misspoke or they will have changed their minds.

Who does either scenario hurt the most? IMO, Cortland. How many upset wins/ties did they get against a team who was looking ahead to the Oswego game the next night? They wouldn't have that luxury anymore :p
Looking at their records over the last 10 years, your answer would seem to be, not many. :)

Re: Stevenson starts D-III men's hockey, joins ECAC West!

Any attempt to break up the Potsdam-Plattsburgh partnership creates an untenable weekend for the rest of the conference. In the situation that you outline, every team in the SUNYAC besides Oswego and Plattsburgh would have to make a 4+ hour trip overnight between the two most historically successful teams in the conference. Canton is closer to Potsdam, but Potsdam is the only school that can be paired with Plattsburgh to create a manageable weekend in a 10-team conference.

It makes no sense to have two schools 17 miles apart not being travel partners. That would be like making St. Lawrence and Dartmouth travel partners and Clarkson and Harvard travel partners in the ECAC D1 league because ...

Look, a four hour bus trip is not that big a deal, but if you must, have games on Friday night and Sunday afternoon for that pairing when they are at home.

My proposal: a 4-hour slog and a stone's throw even out into a pair of 2-hour (if that) trips

Your DI proposal: a two-hour trip and a stone's throw become a 6.5-hour slog and a 4.5-hour slog

Your analogy isn't even close (rimshot), and if you fail to discern the distinction then I can't help you. Do you honestly believe that doubling the current longest trip between travel partners (and setting no less than Plattsburgh and Oswego at either end) to accommodate a brand-new member is in the best interests of the conference as a whole? If four hours on a bus is the easiest time you ever did, then driving two hours on separate weekends might as well be a Caribbean getaway.

Re: Stevenson starts D-III men's hockey, joins ECAC West!

One other thing regarding Canton and Oswego being travel partners is Watertown is almost the halfway point between the two schools. Play at Canton on Friday night, bus to Watertown to stay the night and then make the trip to Oswego the next day or vice versa. Its not that big of a deal. Buffalo St to Fredonia seemed like the longest bus ride of my life, so Canton to Oswego is not a big deal.

Most SUNYAC travel partners are under and hour with current Plattsburgh/Potsdam being 1.75, and extra 30 minutes for Canton to Oswego is pocket change with Watertown being a very good option. Just for Fredonia/Buff States sake I hope the SUNYAC scheduler doesn't put them on the North Country A and North Country B trip back-to-back

What happens when Clarkson/St.Lawrence and Canton/Potsdam all have home games on one weekend? Are there even enough hotels in the area to host that many teams? This season, there was only one instance of Canton and Potsdam hosting on the same weekend: 1/16-18, Western New England played both teams, while Stonehill played Saturday-Sunday against Canton. The DI schools were on the road that weekend.

It would be much easier to ensure the 4-team hime game nightmare never happens if the DIIIs are in separate travel partner pairings.

Getting back to the thread title, ECAC West............

Does anyone know if Lebanon Valley has, in fact, applied for readmission to the ECAC-West? The league is not, at this time, mentioning them as members or members in waiting.

There have been "conversations" last I heard. No official application has been filed that I am aware of. It really doesn't make sense for them to try and join any other league IMHO.

I thought the ECAC W gets an autobid with SIX teams, don't they have six now ??

Re: Stevenson starts D-III men's hockey, joins ECAC West!

Since the ECAC West already had an AQ (and presumably already had their probationary period), do they have to wait to get the Pool A bid?

Unless there is something I'm missing. I'm under the impression it won't be until 2018-19.

Now they have to wait THREE years ??

Re: Stevenson starts D-III men's hockey, joins ECAC West!

The NCAA can wave a year of probation, I think they did it with Morrisville
If the synapses are working correctly, I recall a provision that if the institution sponsors the sport for the other gender, or if there are extenuating circumstances, probation can be shortened. Others will know better than I.

Re: Stevenson starts D-III men's hockey, joins ECAC West!

Stevenson joins in 16-17, so the probationary years are
16-17
17-18

Pool A in 18-19.

I thought probationary years were for schools new to D3 athletics. Wouldn't Stevenson be more like Adrian and Nazareth who were immediately eligible since they are D3 members for their other sports?

Yes, but even with nothing but full DIII members you only get the AQ after 2 full consecutive years with 7 members.
