Star Wars VIII: The Last Jedi

Re: Star Wars VIII: The Last Jedi

...The whole Canto Bight sequence could have been cut - just have Finn and Rose slip inside the ship but still get caught. I didn't have a problem with anything else...

I feel like some of that may have been a setup for IX (with broom boy and the resistance ring at the end). I enjoyed the Canto Bight sequence and Rose educating Finn on that.

Re: Star Wars VIII: The Last Jedi

I will definitely see it again. TFA will never be Top 3 for me but I smiled much more during my second viewing in the theater.

Re: Star Wars VIII: The Last Jedi

You're probably right. I know I can't be the only one who hates this cardboard, mustache-twirling little pr1ck of a stock character.

I was silently rooting for Ren to force-choke him, knowing it was coming, and then *boom*. It was glorious. I gave a little fist pump. :)

Seriously, if you'd like to see Domhnall Gleason give a really good performance for an extended period of time, and with Oscar Isaacs (Poe Dameron), watch Ex Machina. They're two of the three staple characters throughout the entire movie, along with Alicia Vikander (?). It's a really good movie, IMHO.

Re: Star Wars VIII: The Last Jedi

I might be convinced to move TFA up to a B-. At some point, I need to marathon all of them. I'll wait for the 2020 boxed set, which will undoubtedly cost $Disney, and hopefully "de-specialize" what Lucas did to the original trilogy in the early oughts.

I'll give it a go, thanks.

Don't hold your breath for de-specialized versions. There is a way on YT to get them but it's not a simple procedure. Or you could just find the right person at a Star Wars convention and hope he's not undercover...

IIRC, the only change Lucas made that I felt made sense, was the ESB scene where Vader holographicly talks to Palps - CGIing in Ian McDirmid.

I think Disney will release the de-specialized versions in standalone package. The demand for them is there, it's just Lucas's ego that stood in the way. Disney already decimated their relationship with him in regards to trashing his Ep VII-IX scripts, so that won't be a concern anymore. The only question would be if the contract Lucas had with Fox kept Fox from upgrading the FX of the OT (when the light sabers would ignite in ANH, or the transparent cockpits in ESB) and leave the original stories otherwise in tact.

Or the contract Lucas signed with Disney. He may have stipulated that they could never release the original versions if they ever acquired the rights. According to Lucas, the film as it was released in 1977 no longer exists.

Of course, Disney could "clean up" the originals and "accidentally" destroy the alterations Lucas made....

I love the criticisms of the film that begin, "I wanted..." That's your problem. The director doesn't really care what you want and is under no obligation to give it to you. You shouldn't have come into the film with preconceived notions of what will, or what you want to, happen. Just enjoy the story. If you want Reylo or whatever, feel free to put it in your fanfic.

Last night I got in an argument with a guy who said, "The Luke we know would never desert Kylo like that, he would try to save him!" The Luke we knew was in his 20s. How many people in their 60s are the same person they were in their 20s?

Oh, and just because someone doesn't like the explanation given for something doesn't make it a plot hole. The fact Admiral Holdo doesn't tell her plan to Poe is not a plot hole. She is under no obligation to tell him anything. She's his superior officer, Leia had just demoted him for getting their whole bomber squadron wiped out and as she said, she'd dealt with hotheads like Poe her entire career. It makes absolutely perfect sense that she wouldn't share the plan with him. In fact, because he went to the bridge, discovered the plan and then told Finn is the whole reason the First Order found out and started killing everyone. Turns out she was justified.

For me the Leia in Space thing is a problem but can be overlooked. The Maz piece was a video game cut scene. The whole Canto Bight sequence could have been cut - just have Finn and Rose slip inside the ship but still get caught. I didn't have a problem with anything else. The highs were higher than we've ever seen in Star Wars. Cut out the casino sequence and this would surpass ESB for me.

I appreciate that we've been able to have a civil discussion. Other places on the Internet are a dumpster fire.

Agreed!

I think a few scene's from tlj will be given greater resonance when 9 is released and there is some exposition.

I'm going to see it for the second time Friday afternoon

Re: Star Wars VIII: The Last Jedi

Ohhhhh, it's the "Leia in space" thing that is too over the top for most; I get it now. See, I simply wrote that off as she's a Skywalker, and though she's not a "trained" Jedi, she can subconsciously use the Force in dire straits, so that was an easy hole to fill. It's not like the apparently super-powered Rey ever really needed Luke's help to decipher how to use the Force, so I say just shut up and shut your mind off, woman-haters. :D

Re: Star Wars VIII: The Last Jedi

Also, the scene where Rey gets drawn into the "dark side hole". When she looks into the mirror, and...

Anyone know if Rian Johnson is a Twin Peaks fan? :p
