St. Lawrence University 2013-2014: Carey, Carey, carry us to Placid ... And beyond?

Re: St. Lawrence University 2013-2014: Carey, Carey, carry us to Placid ... And beyon

I just wanted to say that St. Lawrence didn't go down without a fight - in BOTH games. Both last night and tonight you guys scored to make it a 1-goal game late in the 3rd. In both games you guys played all the way to the final horn. Greg Carey didn't want tonight to be his last game in a St. Lawrence uniform, and he scored 2 goals tonight and had an assist last night.

I also remember a SLU fan posting on our thread after you defeated us last season, mentioning that we were going to be a dangerous team going into this season and beyond. Whoever said that was right. Good luck to your seniors in their future endeavors, and we'll meet again next season.

I do remember thinking that and did voice it at the time, not sure if it was me or not. I do remember Colgate fans being very frustrated and very down on the team after they lost to us last year and we tried to remind you to look how much promise your freshmen class had shown. Look at you guys now, you are a very strong team and one that I believe will continue to be even stronger the next couple of years :)

Re: St. Lawrence University 2013-2014: Carey, Carey, carry us to Placid ... And beyon

I actually agree, in most respects. However, when I made my post, I was kinda being a little near sighted. I do think once the new regime has some time to get his full recruits on board we could be a strong team again, but I think the next couple years could be rebuilding years. Not something I had hoped to be saying when let's face it, St. Lawrence hockey has been already battling some rebuilding years the past few years. I'm sick of losing and would like to think we could be a consistently winning program. I would prefer not to have to wait a few years (I mean, who would?), but it appears we may not have much of a choice :(
Reread what you wrote in your reply to Rainman but replace "Colgate" with "SLU." It's almost exactly what can be said about us. One, maybe two more years before we are real good.

Re: St. Lawrence University 2013-2014: Carey, Carey, carry us to Placid ... And beyon

IMH(and novice)O, I honestly think the problem is the transition from Coach Marsh to Coach Carvel. Coach Marsh recruited the seniors and juniors, but the seniors only got to play for him for 1 year, and the juniors never played for him at all. In both cases though, they were recruited for Coach Marsh's system, but had to play for Coach Carvel's. How many of them would be at SLU if Coach Carvel had been doing the recruiting, or would we see a different group? I think the latter. The sophomores were recruited at a time when we had a coach-to-be-named-later, not a good recruiting tool. The FY's are Coach Carvel's first real class, and look at the promise they've shown.

I foresee another couple tough years, but I also foresee some real good years in our future once we've got a team that's been recruited for and plays Coach Carvel's approach.

I don't totally agree. Hurley was the primary recruiter for the Senior and Junior class and I don't think any member from either class would say that they didn't have a lot of fun playing Carvy's system. The PP was fantastic all season, although streaky, and that was Carvy. Setting aside this game which I think was horribly officiated, it was just not our year. So many times we'd kill 1:50 of a penalty to get scored on. Our TEAM defense was not what it should be all season. I think we really lacked a stay at home, big defensemen. Dustin Stevenson should have been a senior this year and that's the kind of player we missed. It's a bummer Riley Austin was not dressed for his final game, but his two penalties last night were a very big deal. It set the tone for the weekend in fact.

So Greg Carey gets close to the scoring title, but not quite. I wished he got it. It's so much tougher to score now and if Carey had the 88 scoring cast he'd have finished with 200 points.

I'll really miss this senior class. I'll miss them as much as I won't miss this season. Greg Carey was dangerous every shift for four years. Baker was always such an exciting playmaker. Wick was the guy, so strong, consistent, hard-hitting and fundamentally sound. Raley who was strong as horse and worked hard. Austin who I always liked as a player the way I liked Matt McDonald. I liked his edge. Wenny who gave us a lot of good minutes and is a great young man. Essery who was always a great two way player and hard worker. One and all, a good class with the exception of Stevenson (he can bite my ***). I think we were close this year. We were parked on the corner a long time. Ending the season on a Too Many Men Penalty is fitting. This was a shoot yourself in the foot, make it too easy on the opponent kind of season.

Congrats to Vaughner for the win and I hope the Raiders tear it up in LP. I do hope they win it all, but I'll also add that I am not a Spiro Goulakas fan. He is a chippy player and he clearly said something unclassy to Wick while shaking hands. There was a lot of other BS he pulled this weekend. I hope someone from SLU lays him out next year.

Final point, is I wished Carvy worked the refs more. Ever since Wick went hard to the net and Finn / Goulakas were complaining to the refs, the calls were about 6-1 for Colgate.

I think we will be much better next year or two from now. This season didn't go the way the coaches wanted. To me this season was like the Broncos in the Superbowl. We were good enough and some nights could be anyone, but no matter the top line talent on our roster a good, well-balanced team could easily exploit our weaknesses.

Good luck to the seniors. I wish each of you well and I hope and expect one of them to use that NHL shot at the next level.

As I was writing it I was noticing this. I was waiting for a Colgate fan to come along and say it as a possible speak it into truth kinda thing, but you beat one of them to it. It worked well for them when we patted their backs last season :p

Re: St. Lawrence University 2013-2014: Carey, Carey, carry us to Placid ... And beyon

Unfortunate end to a somewhat disappointing season. Thank you and congratulations to our 7 seniors, all of whom I'm sure will go on to do very good things going forward, be it in hockey or their careers.

Will be interesting to see where Greg ends up signing. I would imagine Baker will probably find himself going somewhere as well.

Re: St. Lawrence University 2013-2014: Carey, Carey, carry us to Placid ... And beyon

Greg Carey will most likely sign with the Maple Leafs, if the Hockey Gods answer my prayers. :)

Re: St. Lawrence University 2013-2014: Carey, Carey, carry us to Placid ... And beyon

What a hard fought series, you guys could of just as easily won 2-0. I think Finn was the difference but Wenny really surprised me. He was way better than I imagined, no soft goals, hope no one is blaming him.

One point, you guys are classy, articulate posters, I enjoy our banter every year, it's almost a shame we have to play each other so many years and someone has to have their season ended. I would like us BOTH up in Placid for once. Why don't you guys adopt us and come up next weekend, would be great !

I bet Carey signs with someone today, he is that good. I really haven't had the pleasure of watching him much, going out on a limb here, haven't seen a player with as much talent in the ECAC since Andy Macdonald, he had an ok NHL career. Good luck to your seniors and you guys also, a class organization. And, cya next year !!

Hurley may have been the recruiter, but the talent he recruited depended on who was coaching the team. I agree the upperclassmen probably enjoyed Carvel's system, but they may not have been the players Hurley would have recruited had he known that Coach Carvel was going to become the coach. Make no mistake about it, I love the seniors and have been terribly disappointed by the juniors, but I still wonder how many of them would have been Saints if Hurley had been recruiting for Coach Carvel back then.

The rest of your post is spot on and a good education, again. Thanks!

Interesting full page story in the Hockey News about college hockey free agents. The article was headlined with photos of Greg AND Matt Carey. Went on to state that the brothers could possibly both sign with the same team this year. Now that would be disappointing!

I have been worried about Matt making the jump to the pros early. I'm hoping he decides to stay in school, but best of luck to them both in whatever path they chose.

IMHO, if this week showed one thing it is that Matt Carey is not ready. He has struggled down the stretch. I think he had one apple all weekend. He whiffed on some shots, mishandled the puck and at times I would say he looked lost out there a bit. Greg on the other hand was in on 3 out of 4 goals, had about as nice a setup and one-timer as you can see. I think Matt has the ability to get there and maybe even be better than Greg although Greg will probably always have a better shot, but he is not ready. We have a number of kids in that class we have to worry about. Bayreuther is still draft eligible so that probably helps us.

Baker and Wick I think both should play on. Wick doesn't wow you with skills, but he crushed kids all weekend, I think had 3 assists, is a responsible two-way player. He is a less skilled Joe Day. Baker is a player that has always been fun to watch and he has developed a great deal from a freshmen who came in used to end to end rushes and doing it alone which he could do in OPJHL.

If I am a freshmen on this team, I am sticking around. I think with a blue chip goalie prospect, the talent in the Freshmen class, the recruits that are lined up that SLU is going to be a very good team and you add the value of a scholarship to future earning potential with a degree and it's a very easy financial analysis to figure out that it is a good idea to stay in school. Further, if a player like Brandon Dietrich signed and faded away, it certainly suggests to the players that they should stick around. Diets could have been a 3 time All-American and was a very high end offensive talent and barely got to do anything as a pro. Case in point, where the hell is Dustin Stevenson these days?

Me too. If Clarkson wins tonight I'll pull for them to get an auto-bid. Love to get 5 teams in. That would be great. But in terms of who I want to win, Union-Colgate final and Colgate wins.

Yeah, the junior class and the Sophomore class, well, good kids. I think we missed Tommy Thompson this year and this series and especially on the PK with his speed. Dahl became an able replacement in the last 10 games and is a great 2 way forward, but you can't teach goal scoring and you really can't teach speed. Maybe TT will be back, maybe not. I am sort of guessing not. Doherty and Hughes are not highly skilled, but compete well and have good speed. To me, those guys are ideal 3rd line checking guys. When they play their game, which they did at Dartmouth this year, they can score in bunches too. Doherty has great speed as well. As for the Sophomores, Hagen can play and was a very good prep player. He lacks size but I hope he gains confidence and starts to score. Will we see him on one of the PP units next year, I think so. McGovern can play too. McMullen has had some shifts where I have thought, this guy should be in the lineup every night and other shifts where I, um, don't. The one junior that is a definite keeper is Chris Martin. Solid two way player with great speed. They are not the top classes SLU has seen in the past or has in the Freshmen and outgoing Seniors, but they can all fill a role. We've had this problem with small classes as long as I can remember with the class of 1987, 1991, etc. Would like to have more balance. But as long as they can all play like the class of 1991 with Pritchard and Kuntar, I guess it doesn't matter. I am not disappointed in either class. I think they are filling the role they were expected to fill. But, I don't think we had the staff to do the recruiting we needed to do for the Sophomore class and it would be nice to have not lost Tommy T. this season from the junior class.

Re: St. Lawrence University 2013-2014: Carey, Carey, carry us to Placid ... And beyon

Very mixed feelings today after a season we all hoped would be better than it was.
It has been a long time since we have been really good.......competitive always, but you have to go back to the 1999-2001 vintage teams to find a time we were a threat in both the ECAC and NCAA's. We have seen a lot of very talented players come and go since then and this crop of Seniors had some wonderful players. I'm amazed that we can have three players near the top of the NCAA scoring charts at their respective positions (Carey, Bayreuther and Baker) yet a few players do not make a hockey team.

It has been a joy to watch Greg Carey these last four years. In my time watching I don't think there has been a player that turned our heads more times than Greg has. He will go down as one of the all time SLU greats. I agree with other comments about it being so much harder to score now than in the past. Were it not for that fact I'm sure Greg would have been the all time leading scorer at SLU. As it is he came awfully close to being just that. Of all the seniors I will miss Wick the most. He's a dude!!! Great all around player and who can ever forget how he loved to hit? Baker turned into an offensive threat and the rest of the seniors gave their all. Thanks to all of them for being a part of Saint Lawrence.

I tried searching for that Hockey News article Freego mentioned and couldn't find it. If anyone has a link please post it. That would indeed be a shame to lose a player like Matt so soon. Personally I think it would be a mistake. While he is very talented......he is a work in progress that would be well served by a few more years of college hockey while he fills out his skill set. The odds of him playing pro hockey with his brother are very small at this point and even if they were to sign for the same team playing together might not happen anyway.

Best of luck to Colgate in Lake Placid. They were the better team. They are going to need to play well against Q Pac to take that game.....and, I certainly hope they do.

As for the future.......we have a huge freshman class with some talented players. We also have a lot of players coming in again this fall and in the next few years. While we lose a lot.....we still have some very talented players. Any idea if Tommy Thompson will come back this fall?? He could certainly help on the depth side. The program is in good hands and our coaching staff has the experience to draw, develop and attract talent. As coach has said on some of the video's produced this year....we are a small school and not for everyone; the challenge is finding those talented players who don't want a big school or a big city.

Thanks again seniors and to the rest of the posters I'm sure we'll be chewing the fat and speculating a lot until the next puck drop at Appleton in the fall.

Re: St. Lawrence University 2013-2014: Carey, Carey, carry us to Placid ... And beyon

Completely agree about Martin. Among the many other things I admire him for is how he could contribute on the Carey line but move to D when the team needed him to.

I also agree about Wick. To me, he's the most improved player of the senior class and the player I relied on most to make something happen. He always played strong and consistent, always hustled, and never, ever gave up. The late season tear we went on last year coincided with him going on a scoring tear of his own, that he quietly kept up this year. I hope he gets a look at the big show, I think he has the skill set for it-he certainly has the hustle.

The things about Wick I really liked were that he steadily improved each year and there's not once that I'm aware of in four years that he took a shift off. His hustle alone will help to get him a look at the next level.

The team gave it everything they had this past weekend. As for the individual side of it, I'm still amazed by G. Carey's first goal on Sat. (at least half of his goal were like that - where the goalie never flinched). Finn gave him maybe 5 inches of space and Greg fired a laser exactly to that spot. Some NHL organization will be lucky to have him.

For selfish reasons, I hope that both #7 and #16 decide to stay in school.

Re: St. Lawrence University 2013-2014: Carey, Carey, carry us to Placid ... And beyon

Wick will likely end up in Switzerland. His mother is from there and he would not be counted as a 'foreigner' under their system.

Re: St. Lawrence University 2013-2014: Carey, Carey, carry us to Placid ... And beyon

Well, I was in Montreal last evening and unable to watch the game. It sounds like we played well enough to win, but puck luck was not with us.

I'll be posting various thoughts on the team throughout the week. For now though, let me just take a second and thank all the seniors and their parents. While this year didn't finish the way we had hoped, I hope the 4 years at SLU were fun and educational. Thanks for your hard work and for proudly wearing the scarlet and brown.

I thought she was Irish. Could be a lot worse places to live and play, but I think he is good enough to get a contract here too.
